Hotel Okura Amsterdam – the Leading Hotels of the World

Amsterdam Oud Zuid Amsterdam|1.13km from Seafood restaurant Brasserie Bark
We decided to splurge on this 5 star hotel for a long anticipated family reunion. Unfortunately the experience was marred by a series of disappointments caused by utterly incompetent hotel staff. When I called ahead on the day of our arrival to request an early check-in the hotel rep. sternly informed me that I would have to pay a 120 Euro charge for the privilege! We are experienced travelers and never have we encountered such a demand. We took our chances regardless and decided to show up 2 hours early. Sure enough, our room was already ready and we were allowed to occupy it at no extra charge. Things really started to go south when a limousine that I had arranged for separate airport pickup of my daughter’s family through the concierge showed up at the airport unequipped with a baby car seat. I had expressly requested this when I booked the service. This was also specified in the booking confirmation sent by email to me by the concierge. The reaction I later got when I complained to the concierge was that I was not charged extra for the baby seat - as if this was the main issue! Furthermore, this was the first time that I was informed of such a charge, as no mention of this had been made in the email confirmation of the limo reservation which I originally received from the concierge. More importantly, what is more concerning is the utter indifference he showed for the safety of a guest’s infant grandchild. All that concerned him was the money angle to the failure. Things soon got worse. When we checked into our room we lifted the bed cover to discover several hairs and multiple red and yellow stains. Unbelievably, the chambermaid had neglected to change the bedsheets. This, in a 5 star hotel! After we called reception, staff was quickly sent to our room to change them. We never heard further from management about this. We later had dinner at Serre restaurant onsite and left the place hungry. The chef seems to focus on presentation and less on the reasonableness of the portions. My wife had a fish main course which was equivalent to 3 forkfuls. The minuscule dessert was pretty to look at but was grossly inadequate even for one person. The restaurant style is a throwback to the old Nouvelle Cuisine school. For the icing on the cake: a voucher for a round of drinks on the house at the rooftop bar that the guest services manager had kindly given me was bungled by the bar staff. When I arrived home I discovered a mysterious charge of 66 Euros by the Twenty-Third Floor Bar. The bar staff set new standards of incompetence in taking my voucher and charging me anyway.I had to call the hotel for credit but I am losing money anyway from the spread in exchange rates used by credit card companies. To be fair, the Superior View room was extremely spacious and comfortable with a magnificent view. The large pool and ample spa facilities were enjoyable and a significant convenience . Also the reception desk personnel were very professional and welco

We stayed in the penthouse apar**ent at the top of the house. Communication wasn’t great in the run-up to our arrival. I emailed them with a question and never got a reply. I phoned and got through to someone who had clearly never been to the apar**ent and who knew no more than I did from looking at the website. Once we arrived getting in was easy and we were impressed with the plastic free room cards. The apar**ent was clean and tidy and someone came in each day to do a quick clean and refill the coffee pods. If you have any mobility problems this is NOT the place to stay. There are steps up to the front door, another couple of steps into the hallway and then a big flight of narrow and precipitous stairs to get to the apar**ent. The bedroom door opens right into the stairwell, and there’s no barrier, so take care in the dark! The apar**ent is very minimalist, which may look good, but it’s not at all practical. Form over function all the way. In the bedroom there’s a wardrobe but the second bed is basically in the sitting room with just one partition between it and the living space. The sides are open to the rest of the apar**ent so there’s no privacy. There is no wardrobe and no chest of drawers for the people in the second sleeping area. A real pain! Similarly, the bathroom looks sleek and minimalist, but there’s nowhere to put/hang your clothes when you’re having a shower and nowhere to put any of your toiletries. The drain in the bathroom shower smelled absolutely revolting. Enough to make you retch. The bed linen and towels are good quality and the pillows and mattress comfortable. The kitchen has a fridge and a cooker but no microwave or toaster. It has a small dishwasher and tablets are provided. We would like to have washed up our crockery and cutlery instead of using the dishwasher but although there was washing up liquid provided, there’s no draining board, no sponge and no cloth to clean the surfaces. There was no way of recycling - everything went into the one bin. The great thing about the apar**ent is its location - close to the museum area and the concert hall. There are also lots of restaurants within walking distance and other shops around. The neighbourhood is quiet and apart from aeroplanes we weren’t disturbed by noise.

Amsterdam Oud Zuid
We had a magnificent stay at De ware Jacob Hotel with a family of five at the end of 2020. With the Covid restrictions it was not easy to travel around, but nonetheless we decided to spend a weekend in Amsterdam benefitting from the beauty of the city with fewer tourists at this moment in time. This Hotel was recommended to us as a cosy newly renovated boutique hotel at the heart of the Museum District, and the price was really good, so we were not disappointed. Our stay was even more memorable than expected. We were received by the very friendly owner and treated with a glass of Cava. The suites and the family rooms were very nice and spacious, we also benefitted from an upgrade, which was a nice gesture. A nice sushi dinner was delivered from a nearby restaurant and we enjoyed it in the lounge with a nice restaurant ambiance. We were pleasantly shocked to be given the variety of Georgian natural wines tasting by the host, something we never tried before, accompanied by the delicious strawberry covered in chocolate. Fantastic!! Breakfast was nicely presented, had nice selection and we were also offered a glass of Prosecco to start the day, but instead decided to swap it for extra cappuccinos and a homemade cake on the house. The city itself was delightful, being not so crowded as usual. We really enjoyed walking in the nearby park. Also went to The Red Light district which was absolutely empty, something unforgettable and special!!! It was indeed a very pleasant break in beautiful Amsterdam.

Marvellous location just off the Museumplein. can walk to the van Gogh and RijkMuseum in 5-10 minutes. We got an executive room on the 4th floor - can get the lift. View from the top is good, and is very quiet considering the location. Street parallel is the top-end shopping street in Amsterdam. Room was compact, with the basin in the hall as the bathroom had a bath as well as a shower and toilet; 2 attached twin beds with eco-conscious mattress and duvet. Air conditioning worked well. had a coffee/tea machine but didn't need it. Breakfast was buffet with good choice of local farmer foods. Ample coffee from the machine. Afternoons there's an honesty bar where you can get beer, wine, water etc and just sign for it and pay at reception; can sit outside in their garden.

It's a great hotel. The receptionists are very friendly and willing to help with everything. The location is fantastic, it will literally take you less than 2 minutes to get to the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum by foot. The breakfast is delicious. The only negative point is that you must have your credit card with you. I paid the hotel some days before getting there with another credit card than the one I took with me in the travel and they did not accept it. But fortunately I could pay with the one I took with me. But I would go back again. Thank you De Bedstee Staff!

After a couple of tough years with covid where we had to book this hotel a few time. for my son birthday,we finally got there. After reading negative reviews I have to say I was a bit nervous but when we arrived 25th June quite late we had a lovely welcoming at reception . Yes the stairs are very narrow and not for the faint hearted if you are on the top. But lucky for us we were on the first floor. The room was large and airy with 2 French doors leading out onto the street view with a balcony. We were in room 14. Housekeeper came in everyday and made the beds and clean up and clean towels if we wanted them were left everyday. We didn’t eat here as we wanted to explore the city but the food seemed to smell lovely. What I would say is the the building is old and you would have to expect to see a dated look. I for one love that but if your looking for modern look, then this hotel isn’t for you. The city it surrounded in old building and that what I loved about it. Couldn’t fault the stay at this hotel.
