Novotel Berlin Mitte

Berlin City Centre Berlin|1.27km from Restaurant Cafe Luchs
In summary: Superb breakfast, good rooms, pretty good location (but there are better in Berlin), a few details could be improved. Good value for money. Accor has a huge range of hotels in Berlin, this is for them a midrange offering. The rooms are of reasonable size, I had a huge bathroom, minibar and room safe. Very clean. Bed surprisingly comfortable. Free wifi good enough for video streaming (there's also 'premium wifi' you can pay for). TV and heating controls fussy. Shower gel holder in the bathroom remained empty throughout my four day stay though there was liquid soap by the sink. Reading lights in room below average. Reception friendly, a little chaotic. The hotel restaurant is open in the evenings, snacks and drinks available after hours. Locked luggage storage next to reception. Breakfast is really nice - great coffee and fruit juice, all the rest as you would expect including some cold fish dishes. One level below an 'omelette bar' status but still pretty good for this price level of hotel. Location in Berlin Mitte is pretty good - they're two U-Bahn stations and several bus stops within a few minutes' walk, even though some of the bus schedules are a bit disappointing. Nikolaiviertel is 5 minutes walk away and if you increase your walking time to 15 minutes you can get to Alexanderplatz and Museuminsel easily enough. There are better location hotels in Mitte but it's quite OK really. Good value for money; rates vary quite a bit by day of the week (so if your travel days are flexible play around with your stay dates). I generally stay either more downmarket or more upmarket than this but it's interesting to see how a midrange hotel works - quite OK, though as often in this category of hotel proactive detail management doesn't get priority. I would recommend.

Four things to know about this hotel before you book. 1. If you book early you will pay more. 311 euros a night booked three months ahead. 200 euros a night booked three weeks ahead. Look at any booking website. 2. On check-in they take the full amount of your stay from your credit card, plus a 50 euros a day deposit ”in case you use the mini-bar”. (In fact the mini-bar is empty - see photo). This might be a problem if you have credit limit issues. 3. They use sweaty, clammy poly-cotton bed-linen - see photo of label. You cannot change hotels because they have already trousered your money. To sleep properly we had to buy our own fully cotton bed-linen - see photo of receipt. The reason they use poly-cotton is explained on the manufacturer's website: ”Bed linen must be lightweight...thus allowing staff to work faster....Experience shows that savings of 5 to 10% can be achieved”. Nothing about the comfort of guests. The staff say that all Westin hotels use poly-cotton. Totally unacceptable in a serious hotel and we shall not stay in a Westin hotel again. 4. Because of the hotel's layout, most bedrooms are 50 to 120 meters from the elevators. In the course of a day you can easily walk a kilometre or more to and from your room. In other respects it is well positioned, if you wish to be in Mitte, the breakfast is good, and the staff are professional and helpful to the extent that the chain allows. Garden rooms are a very little bit smaller than rooms on the street, but much quieter and a few have a balcony.

I’ll describe exactly how the check-in process went, then you can form your own biased opinion. After long hours of traveling, we arrived at the hotel, and given an iPad to perform a self check-in. Five minutes later after completing my information (which hotels usually have by the time you arrive), I was asked if I booked via their website, and I replied that it was through Hotwire.com. The employee said, “You can’t check in through the iPad, please check in through your phone by scanning this QR code.” I am traveling internationally and did not turn on my service so I kindly asked for the wifi. Again I waited an additional five minutes for a wifi log-in since it is typically your room number and last name. I completed the very long self check-in process and was completing the part where you enter the credit card information. She came back and said exactly this: “You can just leave it.” It? I’m assuming this useless iPad that she handed me for no reason. Came back minutes later and said, “Oh you don’t have to enter that part. That’s what I meant by leave it.” Whatever. I have no problem doing self check-out when it’s at a grocery store or a vending machine. Perhaps it would have been more more efficient for the hotel to buy self check out robots that spit out a room key instead of paying employees that are only present to do what? Oh, poured me a champagne. I believe she was better at that. Enough with check-in, let’s make the best of the weekend! Design and vibe is fantastic, excellent location. Things I wish I knew before I booked this hotel: Housekeeping only cleans your room on the second day, so make your bed and don’t drop those towels on the floor. Oh they’ll give you new ones if you’d like, but similar to self check-in you have to fetch them yourself from the front desk, who would be the very ‘helpful’ employee I had mentioned earlier. Body wash? You better bring that bottle of hand soap from the sink before you hop in the shower or else you’d have to run out, get the floor all wet, then bring it in with you. It was clean. If you have a room close to the elevators, be prepared to hear those heavy doors slam. It’s Berlin, so it can slam at any hour. We opted out of the 16 euro per person breakfast because according to the reviews from 2020 it was 7.50 euro, a double price increase. I’ll bring my money elsewhere, because at this rate I’ll end up frying my own eggs. They do provide slippers and a bottle of sparkling mineral water.

Motel One Berlin-Alexanderplatz

PROS: - Location: Next to the Alexanderplatz metro station, super easy to go from place to place. Near the tv tower and many other attractions. Nice restaurants and cafes nearby. - Clean and comfortable rooms. Nothing bad to say about that. Many pillows. - Nice views from the upper floors. - Late check-out was possible and didn't cost anything if you were a beOne -member. It doesn't cost anything to register as a beOne -member, and you get one free breakfast, one free bottle of water (big bottle) and if possible, a late check-out on Sundays (also for free). CONS: - Soundproofing. The noice from the streets didn't bother that much on the upper floors, but you could hear everything from the hallway, if someone is walking, talking or opening doors. - Breakfast. It wasn't necessarily bad, but especially with fruits and vegetables there weren't that many options. I feel like for that price the breakfast should be better. - Staff. Again, not necessarily bad, but could've been more friendly. - Lack of mini fridge. There wasn't any mini fridge in the room. Overall a good hotel which I can recommend and would also stay here again :)

The hostel is very dirty. All the surfaces are sticky. There is a terrible stench in the rooms, toilets, corridors and lobby. Things forgotten by the previous tenants are lying around until they are thrown away by the current tenants. Mattresses are stained with brown stains, possibly menstrual blood (I was in the women's room). The pillows are crumpled and terribly uncomfortable. The beds stand so you can't fully open the window to air it out. The lobby is very noisy and smelly too, apparently there is no ventilation or it is blocked. Absolutely not recommended, even for 25€ a night! It's too much for this place.

Great hostel, located 10 minutes away from Alexanderplatz and with another station right outside the entrance. Nice staff, very clean and comfortable room and bathrooms, there’s also a bar downstairs and you get a discount if you show the room card.

Bowled over by the size of the rooms - or should I say suite! Good enough location, 5 mins to the U-/S-Bahn and airport train - Alexanderplatz, Mitte and Hakescher Markt are all on your doorstep. Most of the time I spent in my room I kept deliberating how I’d sort out the space. It is a bit strange, especially the shower which is up some stairs in a darkened corner, overlooking the bed and exposed to onlookers from the street? Very strange. The colour scheme reminded me of the basement in my office building - very bland and industrial, but not in a quirky way. And the toilet was in some cupboard that you had to manoeuvre into thanks to a sink overhanging the bowl. Biggest gripe was the air conditioning - the hour limit is really irritating. Thankfully the weather was a let down in Berlin this time, but it’s often over 30c there in the summer and you need the AC on! I still woke up sweating! I’m all for sustainability, but there are other ways to achieve this. Also this is NOT a hotel, rather serviced apartments. You have to request housekeeping, and there is no restaurant/cafe and minimal service. The place is not occupied by staff at night.

Perfect location at Alexanderplatz next to U-Bahn and Shopping Mall. Friendly front staff. The Gym is very small and may max occupy 5-6 people - there was no space to train at 7:30am. Sauna is chargeable 5€ which was not mentioned.
