Sanso Kannawaen is dotted with the main building, annex, detached building, and Sorakan on a vast site of 45,000 square meters. Located on a hill in Beppu City, it has a great view, and there are rooms with a panoramic view of Beppu city and Beppu Bay. There are various room types, such as Japanese-Western style rooms and Western style rooms, so it can be used for various occasions. All rooms have their own hot spring bath, and you can enjoy the "mysterious blue water" that is 100% natural spring water whenever you like during your stay.
The large public bath on the top floor, which was renovated in August 2024 and is exclusively for guests, has various baths such as indoor baths, open-air baths, box steam baths, cypress baths, and ceramic baths, so you can enjoy the hot springs to the fullest. From the open-air bath, you can enjoy a spectacular view of Beppu, which will be a special moment. *The color of the blue water changes depending on the day.
You can choose your favorite plan from Japanese kaiseki and teppanyaki. Please enjoy dinner at the restaurant, where each chef has prepared a meal using carefully selected ingredients.
The grounds include a Japanese garden and a Noh theater, and the traditional beauty of Japan can be felt everywhere. Antiques and modern paintings are on display inside the building, allowing you to enjoy a moment out of the ordinary.
"Hell," a tourist spot in Beppu, is within walking distance, making it an ideal base for sightseeing in Beppu. There is also a luggage storage service before check-in and after check-out, so you can enjoy sightseeing to the fullest. Guests can use the shuttle service from Beppu Station (advance reservation required) and the parking lot free of charge. All rooms are non-smoking, but there is a smoking area within the facility.

Celebrated 520 (May 20th) by booking a more upscale meal that day, and the experience was great ❤️. The location is fantastic! It's a 5-minute walk to Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell), so we went straight there after breakfast when it was less crowded. Regarding service, I have to say: it was the rainy season, and there were many staff members standing at the entrance, but they only bowed. It felt awkward watching adults and children run into the hotel in the rain to check in, and checking out involved carrying our own luggage in the rain too.
Beppu is one of Japan's most famous onsen towns, and at Grand Mercure Beppu Bay Resort & Spa you can enjoy a relaxing stay with a full hot springs experience. This premium hotel in Beppu Bay is set on the waterfront, with sea or mountain views from many rooms. Visit the 'Hells of Beppu', fiery hot springs with their bright red and blue steaming pools or take the Beppu Ropeway cable car to the top of Mount Tsurumi for spectacular views across the town and out to sea.

Initially, I was torn between choosing between Kai Beppu and Harumi, and I'm so glad I ultimately went with Harumi. From the service to the facilities, this onsen (hot spring) ranks as one of the best I've visited in Japan, alongside Izu, Arima, and Karuizawa. Enjoying a hot soak with family, then relaxing on the balcony listening to the ocean waves while sipping a drink—it was such a perfect evening. The service was excellent, and the breakfast was outstanding, featuring many local specialties. I'll definitely be back!

Very satisfied with our stay. Room is abit small as the room was constructed out of a container but they still managed to pack everything nicely into the room. Location may not be ideal for travellers relying on public transport but no issue if you’re driving as there are parking lots available for hotel guests in front of the hotel. Love the amenities provided (full range of Pola products and Refa hair dryer!) They even provide a Balmuda kettle. As hotel is located within a park, there is no security fencing. There is a main gate where hotel guests need to scan their card to enter hotel premise but public can easily walk over the slightly raised flower bed to enter the hotel premise even without the need to enter via the main gate. Such setup is only possible in Japan where security is not a major issue and known for being a safe country but we’ll be concerned if this is in another country. There is also no shelter from hotel rooms to the parking area so managing luggage during rainy days will be challenging. But overall we love our stay at this hotel.
The Yutorelo Beppu provides a great place for travelers to relax after a busy day. Visitors to Beppu will find that the Yutorelo Beppu is a fantastic accommodation choice. Traveling to the hotel is easy with Kamegawa Station located approximately 1km away and Oita Airport roughly 35km away. There is no shortage of things to see in the area, with the Shiraike Jigoku, Kifune Castle and Myogakuin all nearby. This hotel makes a great place to kick back and relax after a long day of sightseeing. This Beppu hotel offers parking on site.

The location is close to Tornado Hell, about 10 minutes by bus from JR Kamekawa Station, 5 minutes by taxi, 750 yen. In fact, it is best to drive yourself, as Japanese buses run about every half an hour after 5 pm. The hotel includes breakfast and dinner, and the overall taste is okay. As a hot spring hotel, the large bath is open from 3 pm to 12 pm and 6-9 am. There is also a private bath, 1100 yen for 50 minutes, and reservations are required. There were quite a lot of people taking a hot spring bath after dinner in the evening, and I encountered ***. Taking a hot spring bath early in the morning is basically reserved

We have a great stay here for our honeymoon. Is our first time to stay in traditional Ryokan and is total amazing!
You can schedule your ‘bath+onsen’ time for different type of onsen room based on availability. We ordered breakfast and is very good and worth the value.
With the price offered, this is a very good deal! We have a good rest and experience for our trip.

It was my first time eating breakfast prepared by a Japanese restaurant. I was really amazed by the tofu, which tasted like a chewy pudding. Each dish tasted like it had its own special seasoning. As a *********, I’m used to seasonings such as pepper, garlic, and salt, but it was completely edible and it was delicious!
Some inconveniences are that elderly people with bad backs or legs are not suitable for this restaurant, because Japanese style seats require sitting on the ground and walking up stairs (but since there is only the second floor, I think it is worth a try). The room we stayed in was for four people to a room, so we ate and ate in the same space. When we needed to move the bed to make it or move the table back to eat, we had to squeeze into a corner or leave the room to let the staff finish. Although this move took no more than 10 minutes (about 5 minutes), it was still not very convenient and I didn't really like this part.
The staff attitude, service and room cleanliness are all of a high standard.

The location is convenient and the parking fee is cheap. However, the master bedroom had a stale, stuffy smell — it felt like there was no ventilation at all. I’m not sure if it came from the wall panels or the furniture (we stayed on the 13th floor). The changing area in the women’s public bath also had an extremely unpleasant odour. Some of my family members even felt nauseous after using the room. I really hope the hotel will address these issues and improve the situation.

This is definitely one of the most value-for-money hotels we've ever stayed at in Japan! 🔥
Highlights:
* The front desk staff were incredibly warm, polite, and provided excellent service 👍
* Complimentary drinks and snacks are available until 10 PM, a truly thoughtful gesture 🍶
* The room was very spacious, making for a super comfortable stay.
* It features a sauna, as well as indoor and outdoor hot springs, perfect for complete relaxation ♨️
* There's a shuttle stop right at the entrance, making pick-up and drop-off very convenient 🚗
A minor downside:
* It rained during our visit. If the weather had been good, we could have sunbathed on the lawn, which would have made the experience even more perfect ☀️

It’s perfect for watching sunrise as our room was facing direct east. Unfortunately, it was cloudy and we couldn’t watch that. Location wise is perfect if looking for a getaway in tranquility, otherwise got to drive out for dining or convenience stores. Hotel staff is very polite and friendly. They also serve afternoon snack around 3pm. A very nice gesture especially for guests waiting for check in.

Amazing
MmscooolLocation is convenient, just next to Beppu railway station. The onsen ryokan interiors were very calming and welcoming. Staff was friendly and gracious to help. Room was spacious for Japan’s standards. There were time limits for the private onsens, but some did not and the staff could do nothing, thus it took some time to queue for our turn. The free ramen at supper time was of decent portion and taste. Breakfast was add-on, but well worth the price and definitely a highlight of the hotel. One thing to improve was the lingering urine and poop smell in all 3 elevators (equipped with an emergency lavatory). I think the staff placed one fragrance diffuser per elevator, but it was definitely not enough to cover the smell. Maybe need to replace or remove the lavatory?
GGuest UserThe room was spacious, and the balcony was also very large with a nice view. The open-air onsen was amazing! The service was excellent. They even had massage devices for body and face. The matcha tea bags were delicious too. I felt a lot of thought went into everything.
GGuest UserThe location is great for shopping and dining. There's a paid parking lot with plenty of spaces. The room was new, clean, and even had a kitchen and washing machine. The bed was super comfortable. This will definitely be my top choice next time I visit Beppu.
Bbook-sanVery comfortable! I could relax here as if I were at home, with access to manga and free drinks. The hotel was quiet and clean, and it's in a super convenient location with a convenience store and supermarket nearby. There are no pajamas provided, but all the other amenities were more than sufficient. The price was also very reasonable. I'd definitely want to stay here again next time I'm in Beppu.
AAnonymous UserThe room and the Onsen were EXACTLY like those in the listing and were absolutely stunning! The breakfast was delicious and the range more than adequate. The location is good if you drive but is about 1km walk to Beppu Tower and a bit more from the night street. But I’d happily trade that for the spacious room and the wonderful sea and sunrise view.
MM231559****This Hoshino Kai hotel meets the usual high standards of the chain, and its direct ocean view is a big plus. The food, however, was just okay—nothing special compared to other Kaiseki meals I've had elsewhere. My mom even said she wasn't full. The small ice cream was delicious though! The staff's English was pretty good, and they were very enthusiastic when communicating.
ZZiyoulaiqudeliulangzheWhen I booked, it only showed the room, not that it was in an annex building. We ended up being placed in the building next door, which had much simpler facilities and was significantly smaller. I'm not sure what the reasoning was. To take a bath, I had to carry a basket out and go to the main building. The slippers provided were also very slippery. It was very inconvenient, especially in the cold weather. It would be much more reasonable if the booking page clearly stated this upfront.
OOnpes diaryI was very impressed with this ryokan stay. We chose a Family Room, which comfortably accommodated four of us. The room had two air conditioners, keeping it pleasantly cool throughout our stay. The overall atmosphere was warm and peaceful, truly ideal for a relaxing getaway.
The service was also very impressive, especially from the elderly gentleman and the male staff member who gave excellent advice. They were attentive and friendly. The other female staff were also lovely and provided equally great service.
The ryokan also has an onsen for a relaxing soak, and the location is convenient, with easy access to a nearby mall close to Beppu Tower.
Overall, it was a very memorable ryokan experience, and it's a place I'd love to visit again.
MMoon RockThe staff is friendly and speaks English well; the place is quiet and cozy, and the location is perfect. It’s almost a distance to Beppu tourist attractions, especially the Beppu tower and Beppu JR stations. The hostel is also located near the port area, where you can relax and take a break.
The hostel also has a cafe, a spacious kitchen, and an artificial hot spring. Although some amenities are not included, you have to purchase them at the front desk, the accommodation cost is relatively cheap, so that’s okay. It's a good thing I have my own towels and other amenities.
I will definitely be back here when I return.
GGuest UserThe hotel location is excellent, right next to Beppu Station – just cross the road from the exit. It has its own hot spring, which is a bit small, but guests can use the hot springs at two other nearby hotels for free. Breakfast is also served at one of those other hotels. The room rate is very affordable for Beppu, offering great value for money.
Some top places to stay in Beppu are near popular attractions like Hells of Beppu and Umi Jigoku—so you can quickly get to top landmarks and amenities you need.
