The Kyoto City Art Museum is located in Okazaki Park, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It opened in 1933 (Showa 8). The construction plan of the Kyoto City Museum of Art began in 1928 (Showa 3) to commemorate the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Showa in Kyoto. At that time, it was planned to be called the Dairy Memorial Kyoto Art Museum. The Kyoto City Art Museum is the second public art museum in Japan after the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The exhibits are mainly Japanese paintings, Western paintings, and handicraft works from the Meiji period to 1990 (Heisei 2). The Kyoto City Museum of Art also holds several large-scale special exhibitions and university graduation exhibitions every year.
