Photos of Tengchong Volcano Cluster

The Tengchong Volcano Cluster is located to the west of the high peaks of Gong Mountain in the Hengduan Mountains at the edge of the Eurasian Plate. Tectonic movement occurs often and earthquakes happen frequently. When a violent earthquake occurs, lava spurts out of the volcano. After the earthquake, the lava cools and forms a unique crater. In the vicinity of the volcano craters, visitors can take gray, red, black and other colored volcanic stones as souvenirs to commemorate their visit. This volcanic stone, called pumice, is very light. Anyone can easily lift an enormous chunk, throw it into the water and watch it float instead of sink.
