The Huangpu River runs through central Shanghai, dividing Shanghai into the historic west from the modern east (“Pudong” and “Puxi” as local says). Around the river is the city’s most vibrant area, packed with attractions and a convenient transportation network— metro, taxi, or even shared bikes.

Whether you're coming from Hongqiao or Pudong Airport, downtown is highly accessible.

Shanghai Metro Map: Ride Like a Local

Shanghai Metro Map: Ride Like a Local

Reliable, frequent, and budget-friendly, Shanghai Metro is your first choice to explore the city. Some useful lines for travelers include:

  • Line 1: Runs north to south, passes People’s Square and Circus World
  • Line 2: East-west connection, links both Pudong and Hongqiao airports
  • Line 4: Circular line, great for reaching the financial district
  • Line 10: Covers old Shanghai neighborhoods, including Yu Garden
  • Line 11: Direct access to Shanghai Disneyland

Tips: With 20 lines and 500+ stations, Shanghai's metro is vast! Always check the map before hopping on to ensure you don’t get lost. For a smooth trip, you can also explore these guides:

If you are boarding after 5 PM, you need to go exchange your tickets after 4:30 PM. Since the ship is large, tickets are usually plentiful every hour unless it is a national holiday or Christmas. Please note that I rode on March 13th. The night view is really beautiful.

The river breeze was cold in early March. It was a bit chilly, but I am satisfied because the scenery on both sides was so beautiful. Since the children are short, they couldn't see from the railing because of the people, so we paid an extra 100 yuan per person to sit and watch from the VIP zone, and it was nice because there were no people.

If you book a local tour, you can only choose 7 or 8 o'clock, but this is great because you can take the next cruise right away! If you're planning to go, I recommend buying from Trip.com.

50 min cruise on the huangpu river. They board hundreds of passengers and a bit of a scramble to find a seat or a space at the top viewing platform, then another scramble to get off. There is one bar area on the second floor and two floors with indoor seating. Views of Shanghai are great, especially at night. It can get a little chilly & windy up top, so a light jacket is recommended. The price is a little expensive for what you get, but it is worth doing at least once.

Overall, it's really cool. It makes sense to book the restaurant. Not only will you get several observation decks on different floors, but you'll also get a delicious meal. There's a buffet, a variety of seafood, and other delicacies. And the restaurant is also revolving 😀

The sight is truly captivating. The city is truly beautiful. I think it's worth seeing it from above and enjoying its beauty. We were looking for a glass floor, thinking about the second ball from the top, but it turned out to be a tour of the spaceport, which I didn't find very interesting and was a bit pricey. When we headed out, it turned out it wasn't that easy to exit this tower, but the glass floor was just below, so hooray.

It was amazing and mesmerizing to be at such a height. I had dinner at the revolving restaurant. It was delicious and varied. The buffet was a delight. You can order as much food as you want. (Wine is an extra charge.)

Things to Do in Shanghai #5 Shanghai Museum

If you’re into Chinese culture and history, the Shanghai Museum is a must-see. Outside, the circular dome and square base reflect traditional Chinese philosophy. Inside, you’ll find priceless bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, and coins as history’s witness.

The museum is very spacious, with a clear, logical arrangement of exhibits across halls and eras. There's no feeling of crowding—you can easily examine the objects without crowding.

Shanghai museum has been on my list for a while and it didn’t disappoint. Unlike other museums it has a lot to offer. Instead of just walls of pictures it had physical sculptures, clothing, relics and models. It was super interesting to read about everything in the museum as they had beautiful English translations everywhere! The minority clothing display on the fourth floor was great and on the first floor the Qipao display was amazing! Cant be missed. Definitely recommend putting it on your list!

There was a time when I had no time while traveling, so I was looking for a place to go and I came across this one near my hotel, so I went there without a plan. I don't know if it was just the day I went, but there were so many people that it was hard to see it properly. There was an exhibition of Egyptian relics, but it was really hard to take pictures. There was almost no Korean guide, so it didn't seem worth making time to see. My exact expression when I entered;;🫠
