Great stay at Greyfriars with 2 complimentary upgrades out of 3 rooms. The suites were lovely and very comfortable. We also had dinner and breakfast in the hotel which was lovely. The service at dinner and breakfast was very attentive. A great night away, would highly recommend 😊

The location of the hotel is easy to find and the environment is also good. The little brother at the front desk was very enthusiastic. When I found that the room could not be opened, he immediately called someone to help me solve the problem. The breakfast packaged by the hotel is self-service and you can eat very full. Next to it is Egypt University, only five minutes away from the hotel, adjacent to the national forest park, the air is fresh and pleasant.

A nice hotel with good environment and fresh air, convenient for students and parents to live here, it is quiet and is a good choice

Spent two nights 21/22Dec my family were all staying here for a wedding nearby, the room No10 stayed in, was warm, very clean and a great comfortable bed, but it was the staff that made this visit so special. Clare on reception who was so welcoming and even carried our luggage up two flights of stairs. Emma who waited on our table at breakfast and seemed quite honestly to do everything and anything you needed to make your stay special, lovely girl. Our fabulous North Carolina waitress, who service was second to none. Henry our barman whom we kept very busy 😂 such a gentleman. The ladies who cleaned the rooms were also so lovely. In all I can’t remember the last time I stayed in a hotel that was so welcoming, warm and cared about its guests as much as these guys. Congratulations and Merry Christmas 🎄

Stayed for one night bed and breakfast. Arrived by bus from Witham train station and the stop was conveniently located outside. Very friendly welcome from staff who showed me to the room and explained about breakfast, the night porter, etc. Room clean and comfortable with nice toiletries in bathroom. Slept well with the bed being comfortable and the hotel being quiet. Excellent breakfast with very friendly staff again and easy checkout. Normally stay at a chain hotel in the area but will consider staying again.

Booked this hotel last minute. On arrival I was met by Hannah who was absolutely amazing. Showed me to my room and made sure i had everything I needed. When I asked about where to eat, Hannah did not say straight away in our restaurant but she explained all the places around this location. What I liked was she didn’t give bad review on any of them. For that reason I decided to eat in the restaurant of the hotel. Wow glad I did, absolutely amazing. I had the ribs to start, beautiful and the slaw was the best. For my mains I had the crispy belly pork. What can I say, this was another level. It was one of the best meals I have had this year. I met Aron the chief afterwards and what a gentleman. Aron’s food is incredible. Highly recommend his food. Food and accommodation is first class. 10/10 on both.

Smooth check in, very warm and friendly landlord. He showed me up to the room and talked me through the code to get in from outside. I've lived in Wivenhoe before so didn't need any local info. The room was very small with one small window up high, and a low bed. This made me feel quite boxed in. It was warm and clean but every few minutes a door slammed downstairs making the whole room shake. I didn't know there would be no breakfast in the restaurant, and was quite looking forward to having humans around me on Christmas morning. Instead I found a tray of cold pastries and fruit outside my room. This made me feel isolated. If you're going to charge £116 for a room, please do make it better value for money. I paid the same for an amazing room with free mini bar and amazing breakfast at Greyfriars ! All in all, A nice place but way overpriced for what it is.

Absolutely wonderful hotel all round. The room and balcony exceeded my expectations, and really pleased me, and my standards are very high and I submitted some specific requests. Top floor, room 904, advised now this one and 910 very popular. Both the room and balcony a really nice size too. Lovely facilities. Nice view of Colchester castle etc. Nice communal areas. The George hotel communal areas are wonderful too and lovely breakfast, great choice, beautifully cooked, and I requested to sit elsewhere as so many beautiful options, and for me generally and as need my own space, and peace as much as possible, and am still very aware re.COVID-19, I eventually arranged to sit in the lovely courtyard. Too busy and noisy for me in the main restaurant. Exemplary staff. I also really liked the fact that you could switch the bathroom ventilator off, otherwise it comes on when you put the light on. Of course one should always switch it on when using the shower and keep it on briefly afterwards. My first Surya experience. Sublime.

The St Nicholas hotel is very clean and perfect for just a room. However it is incredibly noisy (we didn’t sleep for 2 nights) thanks to the street noise, racer boys, clubs and bars then the rubbish removal about 5am. Also please note that there is an SOS bus right outside the hotel from about 5pm (this bus is for drunks etc). There is NO staff onsite at all (even though it mentions there is) you have to check in & checkout at the George hotel across the road. The rooms are also incredibly hot & there is no way you can even open an window, yes they provide fans but they are as helpful as a chocolate teapot (absolutely useless) The George hotel is absolutely beautiful and state of the art. The staff (especially Will at the bar) went above & beyond. The food was fabulous at the hotel it’s just a shame the St Nicholas just doesn’t seem on par. The St Nicholas is great if your just wanting somewhere to wash and your not worried about getting much sleep. PLEASE invest in triple glazing & also aircon, I have noticed a lot of the reviews mention the same thing regarding noise/heat issues so I beg that they finally start to take notice. Also I don’t think it’s the safest place if your a single person as the main front door (which isn’t manned) but is via key entry stays open for a very long time after you use your key for entry so not great if your a single lady If I was to visit this area again I would stay at the George NOT the St Nicholas

We hadn't planned to stay here but I had booked us in at the Stansted Holiday Inn Express on the wrong night so Chrissy at Stansted kindly found us a room for the night at Braintree as we had a early flight the next day. The staff on check in who also cooked and served our food and drink were absolutely brilliant. This hotel seems to have been left behind a bit with any refit as it is very tired and dated however the amazing staff made up for it hence the 4 stars. We'd tried the Toby carvery but they weren't taking walkins probably due to being so busy so we headed back to the hotel to see what they could rustle up for us. Although the menu was extremely limited as quite a lot of items were unavailable (not sure why?) We had spicy wings and soup to start so tasty and wonderfully presented. Followed by a shared toastie and then 2 fab puddings. Full bellies and v.happy thankyou. We were up and about before breakfast but the chap said he would happily let us have a take away coffee and any cold items to take with us as they were complimentary anyway. Overall a good stay.

Wonderful Stay. Booked a night whilst visiting Colchester Zoo with family. Lovely greeting by the staff and very accommodating. Room was spectacular and easy access as was travelling with 2 Under 2s, Provided with a Cot upon request. Assisted with Sterilising Bottles for a young Baby. Clean and all family rested very well. Breakfast was tasty, Scrambled Egg, Beans Sausages Bacon. Selection of cereals. Would recommend staying here weather for business / leisure.

We chose this hotel from an experience voucher we had bought for us, and I can say we chose a lovely friendly one. Parking was free to start with as we booked in at reception. The lady was very kind & changed without asking our room because of mobility issues with my husband. The Manager Ricardo offered to take us to town too. I must say our annex was super comfy warm and very cosy. We paid extra for breakfast which I must say I enjoyed my Salmon & Scrambled egg perfectly cooked by Daniel & my husbands full English both morning’s. We used the bar the 2nd night & were welcomed very much so by Maddison exchanging tails of our Zoo visit that day with hers & her children. I great place to stay in this beautiful Tudor hotel

The hotel building is unique, the hotel breakfast is good and the dinner is good. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful, the service is very good. The hotel has two parts, the old building and the new building. The old building faces the street. There are sounds from nearby trains and motor vehicles. If you are afraid of noisy, it is recommended to live in a new building.

The hotel is small, simple, there is a bus stop at the door, and it is very close to the town center. It is very convenient to walk to the town. The English breakfast is very good (the chef is an older woman, one looks at the restaurant, likes her). While eating and looking through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I feel quiet.

I booked a family pet friendly room and a twin on arrival was told by the Manternance manager that it was not possible to have the small dog because they had decided to put a small strip of carpet in the room but they had already taken the money for the stay from my bank when I had already arranged to pay cash on arrival (I believe that this lady was the manager or owner) and she was going to call us to cancel because she only just found out about the dog after me calling the hotel and being reassured that the rooms had patio doors leading out to the car park for easy dog walking once given are keys we were very upset with the rooms no door to take the dog out the card entry strip fell off the door as we tried to open it the rooms were very tired needed a good lick of paint and a good clean quite dusty hairs on the main room and bathroom floor black mould and soap/water scum around the bath and sink old stains on bed linen and both towels no bath mat hand towel the chair in the room looked like it had been chewed all ripped the flooring leading to the pet friendly rooms was damaged it had raised up and very bouncy and a trip hazard the water from the sink tap was ultra hot yet the shower was only just warm every time a tap or toilet was flushed there was this horrendous vibrating noise I believe from a filling tank or pump ? if you put your hand on the wall it vibrated so this was going on all night with people using the bathroom a security lamp was going on and off all throughout the night with only very thin curtains up so it light the room up every couple of minutes the manager put down bed sheets on the carpet in the end so we could use the family room with the door to car park we found lots of dead bugs in the room and maggots thankfully dead ones but still disgusting thankfully I did not book for breakfast the rooms That we where given looked nothing like what was on the website I booked through booking .com very very disappointing stay if they hadn’t of taken my money I would have moved on to another hotel Would never recommend this hotel to anyone

Have visited the blue anchor a couple of times now and have not stopped raving about it to friends and family etc. who have also visited from my amazing reviews. Lovely food, great staff, so we thought. I called on 22 November 2023, and can see from my call log that I have a 5 minute phone call with them. I double checked I could use my Tastecard whilst booking my next visit on 5 December 2023, I triple checked as there was 6 of us coming and money is tight at the moment. The young man on the phone reassured me that I will be able to use my tastecard, he even took my tastecard number down as I read it out. Fast forward to 5 December 2023, we have a lovely meal, all have a starter main and dessert as we had been promised the 2 for 1 deal with the tastecard. Go to pay, and they tell me that the tastecard is not applicable. I cannot tell you how upset I was. It was embarrassing. I could not afford to pay for this whole meal when I had been promised the deal. The manager was rude, did not apologise for any miscommunication etc. when it was his staff telling me that we would get the deal. He explained that it said on the tastecard app “Not applicable in December” but when ringing up and TRIPLE checking with YOUR staff member, they reassured me it would. They then were assuming that I was lying about giving my tastecard number? The most awful customer service I think I have come across. To think I was recommending the pub to so many people, I am truly gutted and so upset that what was meant to be a lovely family meal turned into nothing but stress due to the cost of it. Will now be telling those friends and family not to return. Appalled by the customer service at this place.
