Absolutely wonderful hotel all round. The room and balcony exceeded my expectations, and really pleased me, and my standards are very high and I submitted some specific requests. Top floor, room 904, advised now this one and 910 very popular. Both the room and balcony a really nice size too. Lovely facilities. Nice view of Colchester castle etc. Nice communal areas. The George hotel communal areas are wonderful too and lovely breakfast, great choice, beautifully cooked, and I requested to sit elsewhere as so many beautiful options, and for me generally and as need my own space, and peace as much as possible, and am still very aware re.COVID-19, I eventually arranged to sit in the lovely courtyard. Too busy and noisy for me in the main restaurant. Exemplary staff. I also really liked the fact that you could switch the bathroom ventilator off, otherwise it comes on when you put the light on. Of course one should always switch it on when using the shower and keep it on briefly afterwards. My first Surya experience. Sublime.

The St Nicholas hotel is very clean and perfect for just a room. However it is incredibly noisy (we didn’t sleep for 2 nights) thanks to the street noise, racer boys, clubs and bars then the rubbish removal about 5am. Also please note that there is an SOS bus right outside the hotel from about 5pm (this bus is for drunks etc). There is NO staff onsite at all (even though it mentions there is) you have to check in & checkout at the George hotel across the road. The rooms are also incredibly hot & there is no way you can even open an window, yes they provide fans but they are as helpful as a chocolate teapot (absolutely useless) The George hotel is absolutely beautiful and state of the art. The staff (especially Will at the bar) went above & beyond. The food was fabulous at the hotel it’s just a shame the St Nicholas just doesn’t seem on par. The St Nicholas is great if your just wanting somewhere to wash and your not worried about getting much sleep. PLEASE invest in triple glazing & also aircon, I have noticed a lot of the reviews mention the same thing regarding noise/heat issues so I beg that they finally start to take notice. Also I don’t think it’s the safest place if your a single person as the main front door (which isn’t manned) but is via key entry stays open for a very long time after you use your key for entry so not great if your a single lady If I was to visit this area again I would stay at the George NOT the St Nicholas
