|26.6km from city centerΤhe best place we stayed at on the island. It comes straight from a tropical fairy tale. The colors blend perfectly with the landscape and the architecture of the building is wonderful. The breakfast was very tasty and filling! The pool is very calm and atmospheric. On the second night, our tuktuk broke down and the owner made sure that the best and nicest mechanic came the next day early in the morning to repair it for us, which he did. The owner also arranged a safari for us and our guide there was also excellent (among others we saw 2 Leopards !!!) The place works perfectly and the owner was one of the most authentic people we met on the island!

|27.53km from city centerSingle rooms are not recommended for single women to book. It is in a separate place on the top of the building. It is very lonely at night. The Google navigation deviation is 200 meters. It was led by a pair of local sisters and brothers. Later, grandpa added a little money to change to the second floor. The big room, thank you very much! When I went to Ella the next day, my grandpa patiently wrote a lot of directions, but my English was too bad, and I didn’t understand and misunderstood Grandpa’s meaning. I’m very sorry! The hostel is more than 20 minutes away from Tissa Lake. I saw a tree of egrets in the evening but it was a pity that I didn't see the sunset. The way back was a bit dark. It is not recommended for single women to go back too late! All in all this is a hostel worth staying at!

|1.88km from city centerMy lovely wife and I spent two nights at this guesthouse when visiting Tangalla. It's modern, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Great value too at 4,500 rupees per night including a filling & delicious Sri Lankan breakfast. While it isn't right on the beach, it takes just a few minutes to hit the sand... though to be honest you're better off jumping in a tuk tuk and taking a short ride direct to either Silent Beach or Kapuhenwala as these are perhaps the finest beaches in the area. We particularly loved the former which is absolutely stunning and was totally deserted when we visited. A few of the reviews on booking.com through which we made our reservation are a little rude about the guy who runs the guesthouse. Personally I found Rohan to be nothing but kind-hearted and charming. Not at all pushy or over-bearing as some suggest. His only concern is that you are happy and having a good time which surely is a good thing. Dinner is available in the roof top restaurant. We ate there one evening as a distinct lack of other tourists meant that all the beachfront restaurants were forlorn and empty when we were in town. The food is very good. We had grilled fish and grilled prawns with rice & salad. Not the cheapest at 1200 rupees each but really good quality. Let Rohan know what you want in the morning and he'll go to the market & buy it. So you know it will be fresh... which is more than can be said for some of the aforementioned beachfront establishments. Beer and wine are available. In summary, if you are looking for a great place to stay in Tangalla at a great price then look no further than BV Residence. It's one of the best - if not the best - place we have stayed in our first three weeks in Sri Lanka.

Palatupana
|4.66km from city centerEveryone said that this hotel is good, but no one said how pristine the road in is. If you only stay for one night and leave Yala, please do not book this hotel, especially during the rainy season, otherwise you will probably have to drive for several hours and face floods under heavy rain. Jinshan car did not dare to wade into the water rashly and had to ask for help from a jeep (additional fee). Another important information is that there are many mosquitoes in the room. People who are afraid of insects must not come here. If you are not afraid of insects, please bring toilet water.

|40.93km from city centerThe most luxurious, beautiful and impeccably clean, spacious, bungalows (full of light, if you open the curtains) just outside the Yala national park in the middle of a beautiful jungle in front of a lake. Comfortable bed, good food, really absolutely nothing to complain about. Very professional and kind service, perfect safari experience. The driver is experienced and really eager to find a leopard, the vehicle was very comfortable. Even though I was only one day there, I could see a leopard twice from a close distance. Everything was exactly on time and exactly the way it was promised. The communication was super easy, Dulaj responds in no more then an hour. There is a convenient taxi service one can use. I was picked up from Mirissa and brought back there after the safari day. The only thing I regret is that I couldn't stay longer there. Due to the special location in this place you feel, see, hear and smell the jungle even when you are not in safari. I could have spent some days enjoying this amazing atmosphere just reading book and practicing yoga.

Tangalle
|1.31km from city centerComing off a 16 day trip that included stays at a 5 star hotel in London, both Aman properties in Sri Lanka. and Soneva Fushi in the Maldives. We have stayed previously at a similar price point in South Africa, the Netherlands, the Caribbean, and Canada. Everything considered, Amanwella rates, for us, as the best that we have stayed anywhere in the world. The important caveat is that you must have your expectations set properly — this is a mature hotel set in a tropical location. Expect heat, insects, spiders, and lizards. Some may even make their way into your room. A quick phone call to housekeeping will solve any such issue immediately, in our experience anyway. Accept this, and the hotel is likely to rate as the destination of a lifetime. For us, the staff are easily the greatest asset of the hotel, starting with the general manager of the resort, Sonam. Every day he checked in on us, usually at breakfast, but sometimes more often than that. He was easy to speak to and we felt he was genuine in every respect. We missed a connection in Dubai and arrived late in the evening (11pm); regardless, he was present at our arrival along with a full contingent of staff for welcoming! Janith, our Guest Assistant, while only 26, rated as leagues above anything else we experienced on this trip or anywhere else. He is, without doubt, a rising star for Aman. Every need was anticipated and every request acted on in a timely fashion. Janith has continued to message us on WhatsApp since our departure, checking in on the rest of trip, and we feel that we made a real friend in Sri Lanka. Dinusha, who we met at the main restaurant, well, his smile is simply contagious, and he came across as down to earth, friendly, and eager to do whatever is necessary to make our stay memorable. His memory for our preferences is impeccable, which is something we did not find elsewhere as often as we would have liked. Ruwon, often a driver for us, treated us with consideration and spoke candidly while behaving professionally at all times. Again, we feel that we made another friend here during this trip! The resort is beautiful, well maintained, and while we spent more time on activities than on the beach, I assure you this is a beach resort first and foremost and that the beach is world class. The vibe is laid back but there is no element of luxury missing. Of everything we did, the lagoon experience was our favourite activity. Highly recommended. Make time also for a private dinner at the beach club. You will not regret it. I see that that past reviewers have expressed concern about the cost of food. The solution for us was to book the Fort & Beach package which included half board, experiences, and transfer between resorts. Perfection, Amanwella. Book it and enjoy!
