The good: -The Istrian villas were nicely renovated (as of 2023). -Lots of shade provided by Pine trees, which are well integrated in the resort area. The bad: -The are several restaurants: the overall dining experience can be horrible if you eat at the restaurant/refectory "Stella Maris" (lots of noise, refectory type of food, poor service) or rather pleasant if you eat at the Restaurant "Al Mare" (beach view, buffet, decent service). In principle, with a booking at the Istrian villas you are allocated to the restaurant "Al Mare" for breakfast and dinner ( 1/2 board). The problem is that the restaurant can be overcrowded in summer and you may be attributed to the refectory "Stella Maris", which I consider basically as a fraud given the 4* rating of the resort. That's what happened to us before we figured out that we were fraudulently allocated to the wrong place to eat. If you complain, the reception will simply argue that is a "misunderstanding", but you won't offer any compensation.

The Istrian Villas are located some 2.5km from the town of Umag, they are set in a vast area within a national park with pine trees. The area is huge and within it are the Istrian Villas, apar**ents (Amfora and Stella), the Coral Hotel and lots of other properties that are part of the Plava Laguna Group. The setting is simply idyllic. We landed at Pula airport and it took about 2hrs to reach the villas by coach, it sounds like a long way but it was a nice, relaxed journey by coach (organised by TUI). Roads were clear all the way. The coach made 5 stops along the way to other hotels so if you're coming directly from Pula airport, without any stops is should take just over an hour. We checked the price for a taxi and were told between 750-1000 kunas one way. We had a standard villa, with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, small kitchen area, living room and an outdoor terrace. The Plava Laguna website states that all villas are refurbished, when we got there we were told the standard villas are NOT refurbished, only higher category ones are (Premier, Plus etc). They are planning on refurbishing them next year, we were told. We had one twin bedroom with 2 single beds, one bedroom with king size bed with an en-suite shower & WC. The beds are hard but comfy, pillows are good. The kitchenette is small with a small fridge, two ring hob (no oven) , microwave, a kettle and a selection of pots, pans, cutlery, dinner ware - if you are planning on going self-catering the kitchen is probably not adequately equipped to cook dinners every day (unless you don't mind boiled and fried food only). The sofa in the living room is not that comfortable, so are the wooden dinning chairs. There were AC units in both bedrooms and one in the living area - they seemed to be at a set temperature at 25-26C, and were controlled by the hotel reception. We did ask if we could have it cooler and they allowed us 23C which we found cold enough. Bear in mind outside temperature was around 32-33C. We had HB included (breakfast and dinner), this was at the EL Mare restaurant which is superb. Big shout out to Marijan (the manager) and all of his staff from the chefs to the waitresses (Milena, Teodora and the others I am sorry I can't remember your names) - all very professional, accommodating and friendly. Breakfast is from 7am-10am / Dinner from 7pm-9pm We found the food quality and choice excellent. The restaurant is on the seafront, not busy and had a relaxed a**osphere. The views and setting is stunning. Marijan really knows how to run the place with the customer in mind. He keeps things relaxed and not over crowded. Well done for that and they should keep this up!! On the other hand, the people that stayed in the Amfora and Stella apar**ents had the use of the Stella Maris restaurant which was much bigger and busier, depends what you are after but would not recommend the Stella Maris restaurant if you want a relaxed setting. Within walking distance to our villa, there were 2

During the booking I had asked for the possibility of having a villa with sea view. It wasn't possible, okay, but I would have expected to have at least a villa with a garden view like all the others. But no. I was given a villa overlooking the gray wall of a building under construction. The worst is that they are building it now resulting in the passage and parking of vans and workers who start working with drills at 8.30 in the morning. I write this because I think it is not correct for houses to be rented at a considerable price to a family who comes on holiday and then finds themselves in the middle of a work site. For the rest the place is beautiful and if there hadn't been this lack of professionalism I would probably have returned next year.

Everything about istrian Villas Plava laguna was perfect. We had an unforgettable time at this resort. Check-in was perfect and quick. The villa was newly renovated so everything from sofas, dining table and chairs, beds and mattresses were completely new. The kitchen was a pleasant surprise as it had a large new fridge with freezer, dishwasher, microwave, coffee machine, capsule coffee machine, sandwich maker and everything else you would expect in a kitchen. The gas grill on the terrace was also a pleasant surprise, we grilled every two days in the afternoon. Since we booked half board with the villa, we had to eat in the restaurant every evening. Also the pool was big and very clean with more than enough free loungers when you get to the pool. Also the beach was clean and within walking distance from the villa. All in all everything was nice and satisfactory in the complex. I will definitely recommend this resort to my acquaintances and will come back next year.

We have stayed in hotels in this chain in Porec several times and were always very satisfied. This time we wanted something new and decided on the Istrian Villas Beachfront. The price for 4 nights was just under 3,500 euros. This was far too expensive for these villas. It was dirty and from the first day to the last there was something that didn't work every day. The phone didn't work at all and we had to call from our cellphone every time to report a problem. The manager and receptionist are very unfriendly and they weren't particularly interested in what we complained about. In our opinion this hotel doesn't deserve more than 2 stars; the villas with the whirlpool are dirty and the newly renovated bathrooms have mold. The whirlpool is soooo old, even the bubbler didn't work properly. We were more than disappointed and I described this when I checked out, but they weren't really interested. They offered me a free breakfast, which was already included in my price, or dinner in a restaurant where nobody wants to eat. For what you get in these villas it's more of an apar**ent with a campsite feel, nothing luxurious!! Never again!!

The villas have now all been completely renovated, excellent location right by the sea and in a pine forest (shade!!!), plus a wide range of activities for young (own pool area, kids club, basketball court, trampolines, entertainment, etc.) and older (bike rental, boat rental, beach bars, etc..) guests in a very pleasant, quiet environment. The entire complex looks well maintained, the staff are courteous and friendly, and there is a bakery and a grocery store nearby. The only really small negative point: the food in the complex - tastes OK - is already at the upper limit due to the introduction of the euro... But: for families with small children it is a wonderful experience

Discovery of the PLAVA LAGUNA brand, we were upgraded. Huge holiday village with fully equipped seaside (you have to love it...), lagoon, marina. Very clean, attentive service. All shops, restaurants, services and activities in the immediate vicinity. Be careful, everything costs money
