"I recently stayed at Hotel Lumen and had a really great experience. The service was outstanding – the staff were friendly, helpful and always ready to assist with a smile. The rooms are delightfully spacious and modern, much larger than what you usually find, with comfortable king size bed. The bar deserves a special mention: they serve excellent drinks and cocktails, perfect for unwinding in the evening at also to see the lightshow from or going out to the patio Location-wise, it's very convenient depending on your plans – close to metro and within easy reach of both the city center and other areas. HF Fenix Music Hotels in Lisbon

HF Fenix Music

"Great location, excellent rooms, comfy beds. We had an issue when we were there that the elevator to the pool bar was out of order. So we either had to climb seven flights of stairs or go down to reception who would then use their key card for us to go to floor 7 and walk up to level 9. The pool was great, sometimes the service at the bar was a bit lacking and one or two of the people serving looked miserable. A little smile would have been nice. Unlike the breakfast service, where the gentleman and lady who showed us to our table were really happy and helpful. All in all a good place to stay."

Lisbon Hotels: Where to Stay in Baixa, Old Town & Parque das Nações

About Lisbon

Lisbon is Portugal's capital, a city where Gothic grandeur and modern energy meet on seven hills above the Tagus River. The 1755 earthquake, followed by a tsunami and five days of fire, nearly destroyed the city, but Alfama, its oldest neighbourhood, survived as a maze of medieval alleys that once housed Moorish settlers and later sailors and fishermen. Today that quarter hums with fado, Portugal's soulful traditional music, while Belém, downriver, holds two UNESCO-era monuments: the Jerónimos Monastery, a Manueline masterpiece housing the tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões, and Belém Tower, a fortress built during the Age of Discovery.

Where to Stay in Lisbon

Baixa

Lisbon's downtown grid was rebuilt from rubble after the 1755 earthquake, and today its grand plazas, neoclassical facades, and the tree-lined Avenida da Liberdade anchor one of the most central districts in Lisbon. Hotels here put you within walking distance of Rossio, Praça do Comércio, and the Santa Justa Lift.

When to Book Lisbon Hotels

  • Lisbon's high season runs late June through August, with hotel demand and rates peaking during the summer months. Book 6 to 12 months ahead for peak-season Lisbon travel.
  • The shoulder seasons, March to May and September to October, bring warm weather, fewer visitors, and more competitive Lisbon hotel prices.
  • March is the sweet spot for Lisbon: mild temperatures and affordable hotel deals before the spring surge and summer festivals kick in.
  • Lisbon's Festas dos Santos Populares (Santo Antonio Festival) transforms the city into a giant street party from June 3 to 15, with peak festivities on June 12 to 13 driving up hotel demand sharply.
  • NOS Alive music festival runs July 9 to 11, 2026 in Lisbon; hotel availability drops and rates rise during this period.
  • Web Summit 2026 takes over Lisbon November 9 to 12 at the MEO Arena. Lisbon hotels sell out months in advance during Web Summit week, so book accommodation as early as possible.
  • The most affordable window for Lisbon hotels is November to February, excluding the Web Summit week in early November when prices spike.

Lisbon Travel Essentials

Getting Around

  • Lisbon Metro has 4 lines, 55 stations, and runs daily from 6:30 AM to 1:00 AM with trains every 2 to 5 minutes at peak times. A Navegante card costs EUR 0.50, and zapping pay-as-you-go is EUR 1.90 per trip.
  • Airport to city centre: the Red Line takes 20 to 25 minutes (EUR 1.90 with zapping). Uber or Bolt costs EUR 10 to 20 and takes 20 to 30 minutes. After the metro closes at 1:00 AM, ride-hailing is the only option.
  • Tram 28E is Lisbon's iconic tourist route (Martim Moniz to Campo de Ourique). Board at Martim Moniz before 9 AM to avoid crushing crowds. Funicular and lift services in Lisbon can experience temporary maintenance closures; check current operating status before your trip.

Food & Drink

  • Pastel de nata, Lisbon's custard tart, has its 1837 original at Pasteis de Belem; in the centre, Fabrica de Nata serves them fresh with cinnamon. Bacalhau (salted cod) is the national dish, appearing in countless forms from a bras (shredded with egg) to com natas (baked with cream).
  • Tascas are small family-run taverns with daily specials (prato do dia), house wine, and EUR 10 to 25 per person prices. Try Ze da Mouraria, O Velho Eurico, or Cacue.
  • The couvert (bread, olives, cheese placed on the table) is not free in Portuguese restaurants; you will be charged EUR 2 to 5 if you eat it. Order a ginjinha (sour cherry liqueur) at A Ginjinha near Rossio for Lisbon's signature drink.

Entry Requirements

  • US citizens do not need a visa for tourism or business trips to Portugal for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
  • Portugal uses the Euro (EUR). No vaccinations are required for entry; standard CDC-recommended shots are advised but not mandatory.
  • An ETIAS travel authorization is expected to be required for US citizens visiting Portugal in the near future. Travellers will need a biometric passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended stay.

Weather

  • Lisbon has a mild Mediterranean climate with around 2,800 sunshine hours per year. Summers (June to August) are dry and sunny with daytime highs reaching 28 to 30°C (82 to 86°F); winters (December to February) are mild and wet with highs around 14 to 16°C (57 to 61°F).
  • The best times to visit Lisbon are spring (March to May) and fall (September to October), when the weather is warm, hotel rates are lower, and crowds are thinner compared to peak summer.
  • September is widely considered the ideal month: daytime temperatures around 26°C (79°F) with comfortable evenings dropping to 17°C (63°F), and the sea stays warm enough for swimming.
