The room is very big at the entrance of the house, and I feel a lot better at once. The exposed balcony is comfortable and not necessary. It is very convenient to dry clothes temporarily. The laundry room is fast and cheap. Enter the door to drink popcorn lemonade and take off happily. The bar at night is super atmosphere. Listening to the beautiful song, relaxing and falling asleep, the service staff is caring, the island parking is inconvenient, there is no need to worry about the hotel parking service, but the charge is 20 euros a dayFrom$349

The hotel that left a deep impression will have a chance to come back. The hotel is in a great location, close to the edge of the cliff. Invincible sea view. All kinds of swimming pools are suspended on the edge of the cliff at different heights. There are sea water, natural water temperature and heated water temperature, which enjoy great value. There are 2 large restaurants, and the rest of the outdoor restaurants, bars, and salons are so many that they have stayed for a few days and have not found out. The big restaurant buffet has a cabaret show in the evening, and the male and female singers play piano. There are tabloids in the hotel, 6 languages, English and American languages, and there are American and British versions. Service staff gentlemanly, friendly and friendly. Hotel facilities and equipment, although old, but also basically meet the needs of use, breakfast is very rich, the room given by the front desk should be considered the largest of the same type, but the floor is too low, the parking lot is noisy, the fly in the ointment is less front desk staff Smile, communication is frosty, resort hotels should not be like this. There is also a small episode at check-in. The front desk must ask me to send the order to the hotel's mailbox, and she has my order number in hand. Is it ridiculous!From$125

Very good location, various full breakfasts, staff available.
The weak point is that there are only six places where you can park, but often you already have it. The possibility to park in the casino's parking lot is up to € 6.30 throughout the day.
Another weak point of the soundproofing of the room is the sound of TV, doors in the adjacent room.

The hotel is in a good location and the sea view room which we reserved had a nice view of ocean. But, I need to mention that this hotel is not a 4 star hotel. The whole building is old and they kept it in an old fashion way. The bath is not good, they don't offer even water in daily service and neither tea. (which is expected from a four star hotel)
The elevator is old and always full, really not suitable for an eleven floor building. From$125

My first impression of the hotel was not at all positive... The door to the room was warped, the window frames were quite dated (on two of the nights of our stay it was windy and the windows made a lot of noise and had little insulation) and the room had no no towels or toilet paper...
After this first impression things got better. Breakfast was good and quite varied. The hotel also has an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, free of charge and towel provided. The hotel offers parking for 7 euros per night, but with some luck we managed to park in a street behind the hotel for free (where it was easy to access the hotel through a back door). Check-in and check-out went smoothly.From$81

Like another reviewer I became jittery the night before we left about the hotel being part of a shopping mall - silly me! We had such a great week staying here that we want to return next year (and we rarely return anywhere because there are so many new places waiting to be visited)! Everything about the hotel suited us perfectly. Lovely hotel, great staff, fantastic choice and quality at breakfast, quiet even though you're in the town and, as for the roof terrace - all whirlpools should be that big and have those wonderful views! Before I sound as though it was perfect I must confess that putting out the lighting on the first night caused a bit of a problem but we eventually worked out what to do, and we did get used to the low levels of lighting in the room and the lifts. Although we enjoyed cocktails by the pool, we didn't eat in the restaurant or drink in the bar but that was only because there are so many bars, restaurants and cafes within easy reach that it would have been a shame to miss out on some fantastic experiences. We were also there during the flower festival, which gave us beautiful sights and became our regular evening walk being so close to the hotel. Oh, and the icing on the cake - one of our favourite shops, Massimo Dutti, is at the entrance to the mall!From$214

We have just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable week here. We had, of course, seen several very positive reviews here before booking, which had been encouraging, even although we always treat the most gushing praise with a degree of caution. Very well done Porto Mare Hotel - you more than lived up to the expectations the other reviewers had generated in us! What a marvellous hotel! We were fortunate to have a very pleasant top floor room which gave us excellent views of the delightful and very well-maintained gardens, the main pool and the sea beyond. We found the staff, without exception, to be very friendly, approachable and helpful - and, as many others have done before me, I do have to mention the breakfasts - just wow! The only slight disappointment for us was that the showers (yes, there were two different types - standard and 'rainwater' ) were above the bath, rather than having their own cubicle. However, that really did not detract from the overall experience of a wonderful stay. We will certainly be lookng to return to the Porto Mare on our next visit to Madeira. Thank you all.From$236

What a fantastic experience This hotel was perfect The wait staff were friendly, engaging and entertaining The front desk staff were above and beyond with assistance, from booking excursions, restaurants or taxis - they were wonderful The rooms were gorgeous We booked a one bedroom suite, which had an enormous wrapped balcony overlooking the ocean - the only complaint was the bed is quite firm, but many people like this. What a wonderful hotel! Wow! the room was just perfect, we had an upper level room with sea view, it was fantastic. You could sit on the bed and all you saw was the sea.. Lovely service and staff in the hotel, breakfast was great, sat outside all week on the terrace watching the sun coming up eating breakfast, how lovely! The facilities in the hotel were spot on, the pool and surroundings were great, no worries about reserving sun beds, any time of the day there was always plenty of places to sit around the pool. We ate in the Italian one night and the food was very tasty. Recommend this! Walk straight from the hotel along the promenade in either direction. Such a great location. Approx. 45 min walk into Funchal. We had a spa treatment, well worth the money! Evening entertainment was pleasant, you could still talk whilst it was going on in the background. We booked Madeira as a last minute holiday as a good deal on offer with Tui . We were due to be staying further west in Calheta ,but due to road closures during our stay we were offered the Pestana Royal as an alternative . It’s much closer to Funchal and a beautiful hotel so actually worked out far better for us . We went all inclusive which isn’t usually how we like to do our holidays . But overall it was good . The buffet restaurant offers a good choice of food . Breakfast available until 10.30am ! Plenty of salads fruit and hot dishes but lacks some starter options . There were 2 a la carte restaurants open . I think 3 later in the season . Madeiran and Italian . For what is a 5 star hotel these were disappointing ,( We spoke to the hotel about this ) which is a shame . For a la carte you expect a reasonable choice of dishes . There was one choice of one starter , 3 mains and 2/3 desserts and average quality . I would say you also expect something abit over and an above compared to the buffet . If they could up their game here it would make a big difference . We had a deluxe sea view room which was very spacious and clean and had a fabulous view especially to watch the sunset Staff are superb.. welcoming , friendly and efficient . We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Loved the decor with lots of African artifacts and a very luxurious but homely feel. Room was very comfortable and unexpectedly had a separate lounge area. We expected a garden view, but were pleasantly surprised it also incorporated a sea view. Spa was excellent, pools lovely temperature and really enjoyed access to sea swimming. Our only complaint was that the snack/bar menu offerings were poor - very small portions and just poor quality. Breakfast was excellent and plentiful. Given bar food experience we didn’t try the restaurant - in any event we prefer to try the local cuisine.From$316

Excellent stay for 1 week, it’s a superb location for accessing the local area and Funchal. The hotel has everything you need, it’s warm and welcoming and the facilities are excellent. Can’t wait to come back. Swimming pool location and size is the best I’ve seen in a while, it’s square and not an odd shape so it makes swimming much nicer, plenty of loungers and places to relax. Beautiful views of the sea. The experience from landing in Funchal, transfer to hotel and the most welcoming experience on arriving at Dorisol Mimosa was first class. Yes, some of the external paint work can do with some attention but that is the only issue. The welcome at the main reception was lovely with plenty of information. Rooms are spacious and bright, also cleaned daily. We were b&b which was plentiful and well stocked, kitchen assistant were very pleasant and helpful. The pool area was exceptional clean and relaxed with plenty of sunbed and a small deck area. The facilities such as indoor pool, gym and tennis court are well-maintained. The terrace bar and restaurant was outstanding,.this includes service and amazing food. The most spectacular views from the rooftop bar is breathtaking and we sat and relaxing every evening. Madeira is very hilly and not for folk who have difficulty walking but a stunning island that is self sufficient offering many local produce. Local restaurants are welcoming and give no hassle. The front seafront area is like paradise which we visited daily. Definitely will return to funchal.and Dorisol Mimosa

Great location close to lots of restaurants and bars, and bus stops. It's not too far to walk to the city center and there's lots to see on the way there, too.
The rooms were clean, shampoo etc. was provided and there were even extra blankets which we were very grateful for as it can be chilly at night.
What we did not enjoy that much was the breakfast, as both restaurants serve about the same food and it was the same every morning. The taste was ok but we probably won't add breakfast the next time we stay, or not for all days.
Most of the staff were friendly and helpful, however, the hotel appeared to be understaffed, meaning we'd have to wait quite a bit to receive service, e.g., at the reception, and staff seemed stressed at times.

The staff are all very friendly, especially Suzie who up till this visit was always cooking our eggs at breakfast time. She always greets EVERYONE with a happy greeting, making us all feel special ❤️ . Unfortunately (for us) this time she is only at her egg “station” for two days per week, which made us all very sad. The other members of staff serving are pleasant but she is special and an asset to the hotel. I did talk to Customer Relations who told me the management have decided that others in their “team” should learn all skills, requiring rotation of staff. I understand this but so many people know Suzi and she remembers us all. She is the highlight of our breakfasts at Vida Mar, her photo even appearing on their promotional information. Bring back Suzi!😂

|0.25km from ChinatownWe spend 8 days at the apartments and loved it. The rooms are a nice size, with most of what you need to self cater. We would often pop down to the mini supermarket/bar/café for a coffee/ pastry/beer/wine/water... The staff were friendly and the rooms made up every day, with towels changed every other day and bedding every 4th day. The aforementioned was very clean. A nice walk into Funchal or along the promonaide in the other direction. Walking to the far end of Funchal was about 25 minutes. Beds were single beds, but easy to push together. You get pots,pan, plates, kettle, cork screw, cutlery, but don't forget washing up liquid and cloth. Small gel and shampoo supplied. Beach towels were extra to hire. Rooms have no air conditioning, not that we needed it. It felt pretty special in Funchal with everything Christmas still on display and all lit up in the evening until Sunday 8th Jan when it was all packed away. Hired a car from Madpoint (Recommend them!!) In the local shopping mall, for a couple of days which allows you to visit most of the island. The apartments were really good value. Overall an excellent experience

The room was spotlessly clean, light and airy and the bed comfortable. Tea/coffee making area and a fridge to store milk (or wine!). Nice pool and pool bar with a great view. The main downside was the noisy pipework which woke us up at night. Another was the 'hot' offering at breakfast, which sadly was never hot, and the bacon was the strangest we have ever seen. Strange 'juice' too. But thankfully there was a good variety of other breakfast items to choose from so this wasn't a massive issue. Some reviewers have spoken of staff attitude, but we always found the staff friendly and approachable.

Here are the pros and cons from our stay there: PROS: - Great location in the hotel zone nearby lots of restaurants and cafes and a short drive into downtown Funchal - We got a room on the 10th floor with a balcony overlooking the sea and the Funchal mountainside. Beautiful. - Great breakfast. The breakfast buffet was included and it had lots of hot options and some outdoor seating as well (so that you didn't have to eat inside if that made you uncomfortable). Lots of coffee, juice, fruit as well. - Friendly staff at the front desk - Both an indoor and outdoor pool. The outdoor pool was seldom busy and it was very relaxing out there. The water isn't heated so it is cool but definitely swimmable. - Great that there is a gym, two pools, tennis and spa on site. - Free parking - Our room was spotless - Room included a kitchen CONS: - The hotel is not fancy. The rooms were very clean but there are some areas of the hotel that are a bit out dated. Very minor though. - Beds were very hard in the room. Not very comfortable. - The safe in our room was not operational. It didn't even have a lock on it and just stayed open. - The breakfast buffet is VERY busy. Everyone inside has their mask on but you are constantly bumping into people trying to get your food. I think it's because there are 3 hotels on the site sharing the one breakfast buffet. I found that going at the latest time they have 9-10 meant less people. - There isn't a lot of parking so you have to have a bit of luck on your side to score a spot in the hotel parking lots (though we ended up with a spot every day we were there) Overall we loved our stay and would stay again.

Cleanliness of the hotel was excellent and all the staff I encounted were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was really good with plenty of choice for hot or cold meals. I would not hesitate in reccomending this hotel. This hotel is in the Lido area of Funchal which I find is a really good location, with lots of bars and restaurants in close proximiy to the hotel or for a short plasent walk you have funchal town centre. I'm already planing my visit new year or next year.

Food was great, we ate in the a la carte most nights and breakfast was taken in the round restaurant on the 5th floor overlooking the sea. It was fantastic eating breakfast in the sun! We have been to Madeira a few times around Xmas but never actually for Christmas day and beyond. The hotel made the whole festive experience really traditional with the most amazing choir performing in the evening and a beautiful candle light dinner for Christmas eve and buffet for xmas day! The hotel is really charming and in a brilliant position for funchal or the forum, both are about 20/30 easy walk.The supermarket is across the road and really handy and there are a good few restaurants within short walking distance too. There is direct sea access just a few steps away from the pool and you can always get a sunlounger as there was nobody reserving them. The hotel is going under renovation and will hopefully still retain it's charm but with a nice fresh, modern twist? Our room was absolutely fine with comfy beds lot's of pillows and pool/bath towels replaced regularly. Our balcony was a good size with stunning views of the sea. Everything was taken care of and nothing was a problem! The staff are probably some of the nicest, most accommodating that we have met in all of the hotels we have stayed in and always greeted us with a friendly, smiling face and had time for a quick chat. Our maid was super helpful and left our room spotlessly clean.Pestana you have some fantastic, hard working staff at the palms! I would absolutely return anytime not just over the Christmas period to this hotel. Keep doing what you are doing. Hope to visit again when the renovations are complete. Obrigado

Slept with the sliding door open, but had to put up with the road noise and cigarette smoke, day and night from other rooms. It was hard to sleep at night, as the room would finally cool down at 3 a.m. 2* Did not have towels for 3 days. Asked several times a day, but still took3 days. Even then, they gave us 1-towel for everyone. 3* Hotel WiFi did not work on my laptop, it gave me a non-routable IP address, so no internet access. 4* The safe had no lock on it (see picture). 5* Took 2 days to send an iron to the room. 6* Breakfast was ok, but low-quality food. Coffee was made from instant powder dry milk(horrible tasting). Cakes had eggshells in them. I never took a second bite of any of the pastries they served. Luckily there are a few cafes 5-15 minutes away from the hotel. 7* The staff was not friendly. Especially the younger lady at the front desk. Sassy and condescending, every time. Even when asked a simple question. 8* Cracks on the wall. Broken floor tiles in the bathroom, and nasty mold(see pictures). 9* Looks like they have not updated this place in the last 20 years. 10* Our booking check-out time was 12:00 p.m., but we were asked to vacate at 11:00 a.m., even after we showed them the booking. Very rude about it as well (The same lady mentioned above). 11* We went there to drop off our luggage in the storage room. It was unlocked and unattended, with no employees, people were just walking in and out freely, able to drop/pick up any luggage. There was a sign there that the hotel is not responsible for any lost luggage (See pictures). 12* The hotel key has the hotel name and the room number printed on it in bold letters. Someone finds your key; they have access to your room and stuff. 13* Go somewhere else. Other guests we not happy either. I wonder if the positive reviews are real?

|0.45km from ChinatownThe hotel that left a deep impression will have a chance to come back. The hotel is in a great location, close to the edge of the cliff. Invincible sea view. All kinds of swimming pools are suspended on the edge of the cliff at different heights. There are sea water, natural water temperature and heated water temperature, which enjoy great value. There are 2 large restaurants, and the rest of the outdoor restaurants, bars, and salons are so many that they have stayed for a few days and have not found out. The big restaurant buffet has a cabaret show in the evening, and the male and female singers play piano. There are tabloids in the hotel, 6 languages, English and American languages, and there are American and British versions. Service staff gentlemanly, friendly and friendly. Different restaurants with a variety of flavors to choose from.

|0.41km from ChinatownWe stayed in this very nice hotel for 4 nights in March. Lovely big rooms with kitchen area, table and chairs, sofa, TV and bed. Very clean and comfortable. Staff were very friendly and helpful with places to see and how to get around. The bus into the centre of Funchal was just around the corner with buses arriving every 10 mins or so. The hotel is situated in a very popular area with a good selection of restaurants, bars and shops. The only negative we had is I like to sleep with the window open and the balcony faced the street where there was a bit of traffic but that was our choice, other than that this was a good, welcoming hotel to enjoy this lovely town.

|0.28km from ChinatownWhat a fantastic experience This hotel was perfect The wait staff were friendly, engaging and entertaining The front desk staff were above and beyond with assistance, from booking excursions, restaurants or taxis - they were wonderful The rooms were gorgeous We booked a one bedroom suite, which had an enormous wrapped balcony overlooking the ocean - the only complaint was the bed is quite firm, but many people like this. A small kitchen for drinks etc The spa and massages were 5* without exaggeration This has become one of our favourite hotels We will definitely be back We will definitely be back
