Grouse & Claret, Matlock by Marston's Inns

We have had some wonderful times at this place but recently, the stories local and on media streams aren’t great. However, we decided to visit this place as we had received some vouchers through our door (we are very local) and thought only right that we should try again. Big Mistake! We arrived at 7pm and ordered our mains, mine was a salad with added hallourmi cheese and cauliflower buffalo wings. After a short while the waitress came back to tell me they had no salad. I chose gammon instead. When our meals came all seemed ok until the waitress brought some buffalo wings to the table, I told her they were part of the salad meal as their add ons, so we didn’t want them. The waitress didn’t like this so my husband said he would have them as the were only a pound or so. After this two of the party ordered dessert, and I ordered a cup of tea, the time was 8.15pm. A little later, the two who had puddings asked if they could order coffee, and I asked if they could hurry my tea along too, as I hadn’t received it yet. The waitress said yes, no problem, the time was now 8.50 Within a few minutes a woman who was running the bar, shouted, I’m not doing any more hot drinks! The waitress came back to offer us instant coffee, which we declined as we live over the road and can do that at home. I reminded the waitress to remove the tea off the bill as I hadn’t had it. She brought the bill to our table with the tea still on it and buffalo wings at £5.75!!! I explained to her that this was incorrectly priced to which she replied that it was charged as a starter. I asked her to show me where they were as a starter, she couldn’t as they weren’t listed as a starter I pointed to where the price was and she got all Mardy saying ok, ok I will take them off!! Dont get me wrong, I didn’t ask to remove them, just wanted the correct price. Anyway we came away feeling yet again disappointed by this place. The staff here, let the place down, the food was actually nice, but the service from the staff is very very poor. I’d rather walk into the peak village and enjoy the new chatsworth kitchen!

Fischers Baslow Hall - Chatsworth
4.5/558 Reviews
Having been given a voucher we chose to use to it offset the cost of lunch and what a great choice we made. The welcome we received was outstanding and unexpected given that we had never visited before. The food exceptional and whilst the menu might be considered limited by some, we were spoilt for choice and so were not affected by this. Wines were very good and not overly priced and having coffee afterwards in the garden was pure delight. We have lived in Sheffield for over 30 years and to our detriment must admit that we have never visited Fischer’s before. Our loss clearly and one that we will be addressing as we found the whole experience both memorable and very special. Having a voucher made paying the balance easier, but notwithstanding that the total bill represented good value for money and we certainly didn’t feel overcharged in anyway. We are looking forward to our next return trip and would highly recommend the restaurant and hotel without reservation.
Robin Hood Farm B&B
4.8/548 Reviews
Situated within just two miles from Baslow this is a first class B&B run by a lovely couple. Split into essentially two elements (self catering cottage and main lodge) it therefore allows for varied combinations especially if you are part of a large group. Breakfast is first class and can be pre-ordered the evening before. There is a good pub next door and many other eateries in Baslow itself. We were at a evening function at Chatsworth House and this B&B worked perfectly for us all especially as we had a dog in tow. Of course there are many other reasons to be in the area and these include visiting Bakewell / Castleton / Hope Valley. It is of course big walking territory as well as the stately home of Hardwick Hall close by. Thoroughly recommended and we look forward to our next visit.
YHA Hartington Hall
4.2/559 Reviews
It's so difficult to rate YHA hostels as they are just hostels, not hotels. Saying that, there are certain aspects that should still be excellent regardless of the age of the building or the price of the room. This was our second stay at this youth hostel. The first time, we were given a room on the first floor which was terribly noisy due to people in the bedroom above and the sitting room below. This time, we had a room on the second floor which was much quieter, although the walls between the rooms were very thin. There are several sitting rooms/communal areas plus a cafe/dining room for people who don't want to cook. We had breakfast there on one morning, and the food was very good. The self-catering kitchen/diner isn't really big enough considering how many people can stay here. There are only two sinks, and it was lacking some basic equipment such as a cheese grater when we stayed. Facilities on the second floor were less than adequate. The door on one toilet was broken, leaving only one other toilet, which had a door that was difficult to close. There was also only one shower left after someone got stuck in the second shower due to a faulty lock, and had to be rescued on our last day. Overall, this is a beautiful youth hostel in a lovely area, but not very well maintained as seems to be the case with a lot of YHA hostels, sadly.
Wheatsheaf, Baslow by Marston's Inns

In the Peak District National Park, the surrounding scenery is particularly quiet; the residents of the hotel and the surrounding towns are very nice. The hotel room is large and the outdoor dining area is also very large.
