Carter House Inns

Eureka|0.34km from city center
While traveling on business, my husband and I chose the Carter House Inn as we were going to be traveling through the Eureka area. We chose this place specifically because it was in the Select Registry book of excellent bed-and-breakfast. The Select Registry chooses top-notch bed-and-breakfast’s after visiting secretly and grading them on everything. This was our third Select Registry bed-and-breakfast and we were expecting the same high-level of everything that we had experienced in the first two. Unfortunately this one didn’t live quite up to our expectations. The staff is wonderful and friendly and helpful. No complaints there. The young woman brought us lovely glasses of wine and sparkling mineral water upon our late arrival. However, we were disappointed with the continental breakfast which was pretty bad. Also we stayed in the Grand Suite and it has two fireplaces which neither of them worked. It was raining and we were told that it was because of the storm and the wind. The bed was not very comfortable and the pillows were extremely terrible. We were so glad we had brought our own pillows. One other thing is the window between the bed and the bathroom-very strange and a little annoying. The place is beautiful, well appointed but as a previous reviewer stated the area is quite sketchy and we were also told not to leave any thing in our car and lock it up tight. We were supposed to have a view of the bay which we did not. The window looks out over a bunch of old buildings and we might have been able to see the harbor on a little corner but it was a cloudy day and foggy and we couldn’t see anything. Overall I’d say we were not impressed and we will not be staying here again. A side note: the woman on staff in the morning noticed that I had left my jacket in the dining room and called me right away so we could come back for it. She was so sweet as are the other staff members we talked to. They are all lovely people.

Bear River Casino Resort

Loleta|8.35km from Humboldt Botanical Garden
We have been coming here for about 5 years and it has always been a decent experience until this last stay. The food at the River's Edge was terrible. We had breakfast one day, and ordered room service one night. The omelet my husband got tasted like it was made with powdered eggs. They were out of hash browns (how does that happen?) I don't even know where to start with the room service. You have to call the front desk to order room service, which makes no sense. We called to ask if you could get soup for room service and were told no, then when we called to order the woman asked my husband if he wanted soup or salad!!!! When he asked what kind of soup she said ”I don't know ”. Not let me find out for you, just I don't know, so he got a salad with blue cheese dressing. We get our food and his salad has no dressing! He calls and says he didn't get his blue cheese dressing, when the person shows up at our door she has a bowl of blue cheese crumbles, no dressing!! We just gave up at that point. His fettuccine had some kind of burned cheese chunk on it, at least that's what we think it was. My meatloaf was more like salisbury steak, and was covered in some dark brown substance that was supposed to be gravy (I think). I didn't think you could mess up on mashed potatoes but those were not good either. $20.99 and I only could choke down a couple bites. There were no good machines to play on and of the ones we did play on, we had issues with half of them. The first night we went to the bar I ordered a drink and a shot. I was told that I could not have a drink and a shot, even though I was paying for them because it's against the rules??!! I've never heard of such a thing in my life! Then later on my husband and I saw other bartenders selling drinks with shots! I guess it's all about who you know. The saving graces of this place and the reason for 3 stars? The Express Cafe' has amazing food and staff, we loved every meal we had there and the staff was always very helpful. Barry the bartender, he was so nice and made great drinks. The kitty cat robot server (Bella) in the restaurant. The room was decent and the bed was comfortable. Not sure what's changed, new management? Hopefully they are able to turn things around. Not sure if we will be back.

Comfort Inn Humboldt Bay - Eureka
4/5102 Reviews
We stayed here years ago. We came up to work on a rental on a semi-emergency basis, our first hotel stay since COVID-19 became a household word. When I came to check in we had a discussion about the room, as my husband prefers grab bars where he showers. The clerk, who was training a new employee, suggested I look at the room first. I did- no bars to hold onto. The clerk changed the room out for an accessible room which would work for us. The room was very well kept with even enough room for a wheelchair to get around easily. I wasn't fond of the casual chair and hassock but we were comfortable for two nights, They were able to open their pool as COVID-19 restrictions had eased a bit. They still couldn't serve breakfast, but gave bags of breakfast to go with a pastry and a breakfast burrito in them. I thought this was a clever way to see their guests got at least a bit of a perk in the morning. We spoke to staff outside- they had their masks on as did we. Welcoming place and well run.
Super 8 by Wyndham Arcata
3.1/5101 Reviews
The location is tightly wedged between a busy McDonald's drive through and another hotel. Not inviting from the moment you pull into the drive way. The smell of pot and people smoking greets you in the parking lot and you notice many construction and landscape workers staying here and since so many of them are in the hallways talking on their phones, it likely means they are seeking privacy from overcrowded rooms. The moment you step into the hallway a musty smell greets you and you can't help take notice of overly warn and stained carpeting that should have been replaced years ago. No elevator or luggage carts so having a room on the second floor sucks. The room to our door sticks and is incredibly hard to open. Once inside, the stench of years of who knows what... greets you again. The room has two dim lights and one corner of the room has a chair in the shadows with no light. Paint spots on the old curtains and the windows don't seem to lock. We open the window for air circulation and notice the window really does not lock. Stains on the bedspread which looks like it has not been cleaned in a long time and we are afraid to take our shoes off. Complaining to the front desk does nothing. Our request for a refund is denied and the young boy at the desk is lacking in trained customer service skills. After a long day of traveling, we leave to find a better hotel even though we may never see a refund for the two nights we booked. As we are leaving an elderly couple has the same look of despair as us when they see their own room they booked online too. We travel a lot every year. This is by far the worst hotel experience ever and it does not seem safe to stay there. We will never book another Super 8 hotel again, EVER This hotel cannot possible meet the standards of the Super 8 franchise agreement. Just look at all the negative reviews.
Motel 6 Eureka, CA – Redwood Coast
3.2/593 Reviews
With Motel 6 in America you know in advance exactly what you’re going to get and the one in Eureka certainly delivers what’s on the label. Prices were quite reasonable and the venue is located right on the 101 highway. The rooms are exactly as you would expect and everything was clean and the bed was very comfortable. There was a bathtub and shower combination and the water was nice and hot. There were plenty of clean towels. Ample parking was available and I felt safe in the property. Motel six is a three star hotel chain and this location delivered a five star service within that class.
Victorian Inn
4.5/556 Reviews
My husband and i stayed here on our road trip during the crazy, rainy weather that we had in March. Our experience was as good as it could be, under the circumstances. Every person we encountered was so genuine and friendly. The restaurant and bar were not opened, much to my chagrin. Check when you book what days they will be open. Our room was very pretty, and the hotel itself was lovely in general. Due to the rain, our exploration of the town was minimal, but I was so impressed with the owners, particularly Jenny, of this unique hotel. Due to the weather conditions, the little town was suffering and had to go into survival mode. After all the Covid mess, they had to endure yet another setback. But how they handled it was so heartening. Jenny explained that they rally together and decide which three restaurants are going to stay open on a particular day to make sure visitors are taken care of. That night, it was Mexican food, pizza and a little place called The Boardroom. We had just had the former two, so opted for the wild card. Wow, we were so pleased! Food was excellent, prices were fantastic and atmosphere was lively and festive. Just what we needed! For breakfast, they had a grab and go bag that you picked up in the bar area of the hotel (it was actually quite yummy!). They had coffee brewing to to take to go as well! Before we left, I got to spend a little time in town going to a few of the shops. Everyone was so nice to deal with, and I found several things I had hoped to find. My husband went for a hike while I was shopping, and shared how beautiful it was and will definitely do a bike ride next time. I can't wait to go back here to this sweet little town of Ferndale and to stay at the Victorian Inn when the weather is more welcoming!
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Arcata/Eureka-Airport Area
4.4/597 Reviews
This hotel is clean and comfortable. The room was large enough to accommodate all our luggage. The beds were comfortable. The bathroom area was clean with plenty of towels supplied. The breakfast had several hot and cold options. The first morning there were two breakfast attendants. They kept the area clean and well supplied. The second morning there was only one young man working and he was struggling to keep up. People were waiting for food and the tables were not clean.
Clarion Hotel by Humboldt Bay
3.9/5104 Reviews
All rooms open outside. Not a safe neighborhood. When we checked in we waited in the car until what appeared to be a homeless person left from in front of our room. On the street adjoining the hotel is what appears to be a permanent RV parked that has seen much better days. That probably has less to do with the hotel and more to do with the entire city. Not impressed with Eureka! The room itself is nice and appears to have been remodeled. It offers a very good breakfast (while other hotels we stayed at in CA said they could not offer breakfast due to Covid). The hotel is located next to a major road and the traffic can be heard all night.
