Protea Hotel Kimberley

Protea Hotel Kimberley

📍 The Kimberley Big Hole, W Circular Rd, Kimberley
★★★★ 8.5 (29 reviews)

"The Protea Hotel in Kimberley is a run down, with a few rooms refurbished. rooms have not nice views and the general upkeep needs some work - also no lift for luggage to upper floor which is an issue for guests when porters aren’t working, Restaurant is barely edible, food is cold, service is not good and it’s so salty - we ate once the whole stay and never again. Safety in the local area is a problem and we were advised not to jog outside the hotel security perimeter Not a hotel to return to The reception staff are excellent and trying their best."

Protea Hotel Kimberley ★★★★
"One would expect with a 4 Star hotel like Protea Marriot they would have a up to standard restaurant on their property. The Cullinan Restaurant is nothing more than disgusting. Basic items like pizza an chicken snitchel and ciabatta bread with chicken livers not available. We ordered the basic Beef Burger and Spaghetti Bolognese. Took them an hour to prepare a overcooked burger and disgusting spagetti. We were the only people in the restaurant. According to the reviews this issue has been going on for some time. Please look into this and treat it with the necessary urgency that it requires."

"This hotel is fantastic to look at, plenty of character. There are a number of positive and negatives from our perspective. First observation was no one in reception when we arrived at 5pm, the door was locked, I waited 10 minutes. The receptionist gave me the key and said your room is in that direction, there are no signs for room numbers. Not a good check in experience. The room however was lovely, big and spacious with a good aircon fitted and large tv. The bed was very comfortable and we both slept well. I did as reception for a second set of towels as only one set in room, an hour later I went back and asked again. A big plus of this hotel is the restaurants adjoining the hotel, we ate at the Fat Greek. Breakfast was a disaster, I went in at 09:15 there was no service, no tea or coffee, no breakfast for toast, no pastries and one dried out egg. I asked a lady for 2 fried eggs, after 15 minutes I left without breakfast. I rate the room 5 but service 1… we left disappointed. Management need to get a grip on poor service!"

"Lovely little spot. Quiet. Note that you can cook but not easily wash up as no sink or wash clothes (although there was dishwashing liquid). I rinsed things and left them in the bath. They were returned to the cupboard cleaned. Nice pool which was essential for the summer scorching days. "

"Based on a fond past experience of about 14 years ago, we decided to stay over again as we travelled through. Based on the rates charged in comparison to other 4 star hotels in town, we expected our experience to be matched with the previous time we had been here. What a total let down. It is actually a disgrace to say the least. It is evident that the hotel in its entirety is in dire need of maintenance and upkeep and a refurbishment, but at the very least a thorough scrub and deep clean of everything - linen included. Every soft furnishing is stained. Wall paint peels from damp damage. We moved rooms 3 times in search of one with a working air conditioner. The last time we moved, they offered to bring our luggage. We waited more than an hour and then enquired about it, when the receptionist admitted she had forgotten. Phones in the rooms are not operational. Coffee and tea have not been checked and stocked in the rooms. We had a nice dinner - but costly and very slow service considering we were only 4 people in the restaurant. I will definitely not come back again. It is an utter shame that a place with so much history is in this condition. At the very least, keep it clean. Is that too much to ask??"
