[Sigirishwara - Vampire Dracula Birthplace] We left Cibiu and took the train to Sigirishwara, about an hour's drive away, and we arrived in Sigirishwara, where the Vampire Dracula was born. Sigishwara is small compared to Sibiu and can be visited in just a day. The old town centered on the 14th century clock tower, the medieval churches, bell towers and the old houses that are quaint and colorful make up the stunning scenes. The plague in the 17th century halved the population of Sigishwara, and then engulfed half of the town by the Vulcan. Today Sigishwara is one of the best preserved and inhabited medieval towns in Europe, and was selected as a United Nations World Heritage Site in 1999. The former residence of Dracula in the ancient city was transformed into a Dracula theme restaurant. Dracula is not only the main character in novels and movies, he has really existed. He was Vlad III Dracula, the Grand Duke of Varachiya in the 15th century. Born brutally, he invented the torture of puncture, inserting enemies and prisoners of war into wooden stakes and letting them die slowly in the torture. The Ottoman invasion of Transylvania was said to have seen about 20,000 people interspersed on wooden stakes like kebabs in front of Dracula Castle, a horrific scene that scared the enemy. The ancient bell tower is now a small museum open to visitors, with four floors displaying medieval furniture and daily necessities. The four small towers on the steeple symbolize the autonomy of justice, and the local parliament once had the right to sentence the death penalty. There is a passageway at the top of the tower overlooking the town.
