Jiuzhaigou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sichuan's Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, named for the nine Tibetan villages that sit inside its valley. Travelers come for the turquoise lakes, multi-tiered waterfalls and forests that flare into color each autumn; the park's signature stops, from Five-Flower Lake to Nuorilang Waterfall and the Rize and Zechawa Valleys, fill a full day of walks and shuttle rides. At the valley's top, Long Lake (the "Blue Mirror of the Plateau") is the highest lake, ringed by snow-capped mountains. Jiuzhaigou sits in a Tibetan area, so a stay can also include Tibetan home visits, horseback riding, incense making or thangka painting.

Where to Stay in Jiuzhaigou

Almost every Jiuzhaigou hotel sits in one of two places: beside the scenic-area tourist center at the park entrance, or in Zhangzha Town, where the restaurants, shops and evening theater shows cluster. Base yourself near the entrance to line up early for the park, or in the town for more dining and nightlife.

When to Book Jiuzhaigou Hotels

Jiuzhaigou has a clear travel calendar, and timing your booking matters as much as the hotel itself.

• Jiuzhaigou's peak season runs April 1 to November 15, and the best window for autumn foliage is roughly October 20 to November 10.
• April to November is Jiuzhaigou's main travel season, with September, October and November often named the best months to visit.
• Jiuzhaigou's famous autumn colors peak from around October 15 to 25.
• July and August are Jiuzhaigou's busiest months, when prices are higher and the scenic area is more crowded.

• From Chengdu, the high-speed train to Huanglong Jiuzhai takes about 2 hours, followed by a connecting bus to Jiuzhaigou.
• The fastest rail option runs from Chengdu East Railway Station to Huanglong Jiuzhai Railway Station in about 1 hour 39 minutes.
• The nearest airport is Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport, about 88 km from hotels around the Jiuzhaigou Scenic Spot.

Food

• Jiuzhaigou local specialties include Tibetan hot pot, grilled sausages, walnut blossom salad, mushroom stew and tianma.
• Dishes to try include yak meat hotpot, butter tea, tsampa and grilled lamb skewers.
• Food options inside Jiuzhaigou National Park are limited to a few simple restaurants, so many travelers still bring lunch and snacks.

Entry

• Most international travelers need a Chinese visa; the L visa is the tourism category, with stays granted up to the period issued.
• No special permit is required for foreigners visiting Jiuzhaigou, unlike some destinations in western China such as Tibet.
• Entry to Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area costs 190 yuan (~US$28) per person plus a 90 yuan (~US$13) vehicle ticket, and visitors must leave the area before 6:00 p.m.
