That makes the walking radius of the hotel the first decision, before the star rating. Kyoto Hotels by Area: Which Base Fits Your Trip

Kyoto Station is the arrival point for the shinkansen and for the JR lines that reach Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama. Kawaramachi is the busy end, with the river and the widest spread of rates. The Nijo Castle district sits west of the centre and goes quiet after dinner.

The three bases do not overlap much. A station hotel is the fastest base for a day trip. A Kawaramachi hotel puts the river and the restaurants outside the door and costs the most. The Nijo Castle side is the cheapest way to stay central.

Kyoto Hotels Near Kyoto Station: Best for First-Timers

A first trip usually starts at the station. The building holds the subway, the JR gates, the city bus terminal and a department store, with the shinkansen platforms at the north end. Everything from a Nara day trip to the Arashiyama train starts under that roof, which is why the area suits a first visit.

Miyako is the one for a family that wants two restaurants and the station across the street. Onyado Nono is the one for the bath at the end of a day spent walking temples, and its Shichijo Station is 0.58 km away. Itami Airport is about 47 km away, so plan that arrival before you book.

Kyoto Hotels in Kawaramachi: Best for Dinner and the River

Kawaramachi is the evening side of Kyoto. The Kamo River runs along the district, Shijo Street carries the department stores and the restaurants, and the lanes towards Gion hold the small bars and the old teahouses. It is the base for a trip built around dinner, the riverbank walk and the temples in the east.

TAVINOS is the budget pick, and at US$118 a night it leaves more for the temples. sequence is the one for a bath, a bar and a spa, and it is also the closer of the two to Gion.

Kyoto Hotels in Nijo Castle: Best for Quieter Streets

The Nijo Castle district sits west of the centre, where the streets run quiet after dark and the castle walls take up several blocks. Nijojomae subway station serves the area, Shijo Street is a short walk south, and the covered arcades of Sanjo and Karasuma are one stop or a fifteen minute walk away.

Price alone will not pick your district. The two cheapest hotels sit in different districts and suit different trips, and the top band holds three hotels that share a star rating and almost nothing else.

Kyoto Hotels: Metro, Food and Booking Tips

Five things change a stay more than the star rating does.

• Buses reach the temples the subway misses. The Karasuma and Tozai lines cover the centre, and the city buses take over from there for Kinkaku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera and the Arashiyama road. The stands at the station fill first thing in the morning, so start early or walk the first leg and pick up a bus further along the route, where the queue is shorter.
• Nishiki Market closes in the late afternoon. The covered street runs a few blocks south of Shijo, with the pickles, the tofu and the knife shops trading through the morning and shutting down well before dinner. Go before lunch, and treat the stalls as a snack crawl rather than a meal. The food halls under Kyoto Station cover the same ground when the market shuts, and they stay open into the evening.
• Luggage goes ahead by courier. Takuhaibin counters at the convenience stores and at the station send a suitcase to your next hotel or city, usually within a day. That is what makes a one-night stop near the station and a longer stay in Kawaramachi easy to combine without dragging a bag onto the buses.
• Blossom and foliage weeks fill first. Cherry blossom runs from late March into early April and the autumn foliage peaks in the second half of November, and both fill the city's rooms months ahead. The same weeks are when the buses and the temple paths are at their busiest, so book accommodation as soon as the dates are fixed.
• A taxi earns its fare at rush hour. The buses crawl along Shijo and Kawaramachi when the city is busy, and a short ride across the centre can save half an hour. GO, DiDi and Uber all dispatch cars, and the desks at the station will call one for an early train.
