Hanoi spreads its hotels across three bases that suit different trips: the old streets around Hoan Kiem Lake, the museum and government quarter at Ba Dinh, and the newer business belt around Giang Vo. Hanoi Hotels by Area: Which Base Fits Your Trip

Choose the base before the room. Hoan Kiem puts the lake, the night market and most of the old streets within a walk. Ba Dinh is for the mausoleum, the citadel and the pagodas along West Lake, and it goes quiet after dinner. Giang Vo is office and exhibition country, with wider roads and fewer restaurants on the pavement.

The three sit within a few kilometres of each other, so a taxi between them is short. What changes is your morning: a lake walk from Hoan Kiem, a queue at the mausoleum from Ba Dinh, or a meeting across the road in Giang Vo. Main roads thicken at rush hour, which is the one argument for staying in the district where you will spend your days.

Hanoi Hotels in Hoan Kiem: Best for First-Timers

Hoan Kiem is the old city. The lake, the 36 streets, the weekend night market and the water puppet theatre all sit in this district, and a first trip mostly happens on foot. The lanes are narrow, so distances look longer than they walk.

• Tru by Hilton Hanoi Station: Four star on Tran Hung Dao Street, 170 m from Hanoi Railway Station and 460 m from the Old Quarter, with a free gym, a restaurant, a cafe, a bar, free luggage storage, express check-in and a buffet breakfast. Average rate about US$92.
• Dreamora Corner Hotel: Three star on Bach Dang Street by the Red River, 610 m from the Old Quarter and 830 m from the water puppet theatre, with free room Wi-Fi, a restaurant, room service, a coworking space, currency exchange and paid airport pick-up and drop-off. Average rate about US$37.

The two sit at opposite ends of the district. Tru is the arrival hotel: step off a train, drop the bags, and walk to Train Street or the Old Quarter in under ten minutes. Dreamora is the budget one, with the river at the end of the street and an airport pick-up you can book before you fly. Tru carries the higher rate for the gym and the bar; Dreamora wins on price and on the transfer.

Hanoi Hotels in Ba Dinh Square: Best for History and Lake Views

Ba Dinh Square keeps the monuments: the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long and, a little north, Tran Quoc Pagoda on the edge of West Lake. Streets are wider than in the old quarter and evenings are quiet, so this base suits sightseeing days that start early and end before dinner.

Queen Cafe sits on the northern edge of the old quarter, so Dong Xuan Market and the night market are a ten-minute walk and the busiest lanes stay at arm's length. Luxe Paradise trades that for the lake: the pagoda is 460 m away, West Lake 920 m, and the spa and gym are inside the building. Queen Cafe runs its desk all night, which helps if you land late. Luxe Paradise is the quieter of the two, and the better one for a slow morning by the water.

Hanoi Hotels in Giang Vo: Best for Business and Longer Stays

Giang Vo is the business belt: the convention centre, office towers and the Sky Lotte observation deck, with apartment blocks in between. Little of it is picturesque, but rooms are larger, roads are wider, and the old quarter is a short taxi ride south. It works for a work trip, a trade fair, or a stay long enough that a kitchen matters.

• Super Candle Hotel: Four star on Doi Can Street, 740 m from the Sky Lotte observation deck and 1.4 km from West Lake, with an indoor heated pool and pool bar, a free gym, a sauna, two restaurants, a paid conference room, free public parking and a buffet breakfast. Airport pick-up and drop-off cost extra. Average rate about US$149.
• Aira Kim Ma Apartment: Three star in an alley off Kim Ma Street, 480 m from Rose Kitchen and 1.3 km from Cat Linh metro station, with a kitchenette, a fridge, a desk, a clothes dryer, a lift and motorcycle parking. Average rate about US$16.

The two are not really competitors. Super Candle is the full-service option, with the pool, the sauna, two restaurants and conference space, and it is priced for a work trip on an expense account. Aira is the other trade: a small apartment with a kitchenette and weekly cleaning, at a nightly rate that undercuts every other hotel in this guide. Super Candle suits a short, busy stay; Aira suits a month of mornings where you make your own coffee.

Hanoi Hotels: Metro, Food and Booking Tips

Four things move a Hanoi stay more than the star rating does.

• Walk the old quarter rather than ride it. The nearest metro stops are Cat Linh and La Thanh, from 1.3 km at Aira Kim Ma to about 4.8 km at Dreamora, so walking and short taxi rides cover most of a stay. Tru by Hilton is the arrival exception, with Hanoi Railway Station 170 m from the door.
• Eat where the streets narrow to one lane. Queen Cafe has Dong Xuan Market and the old town night market within a ten-minute walk, Dreamora has the Sen Hang Tre restaurant 570 m away, and Super Candle has Rose Kitchen, a cooking class, 540 m away. For a wider choice of restaurants and cafes, the West Lake side is where the city's international kitchens and a weekend organic market concentrate.
• Book around Tet and the Giang Vo trade fairs. Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, lifts demand and shuts some kitchens for the week, and when a trade fair runs at Giang Vo the hotels nearest the halls fill first. Family or connecting rooms go before the cheap singles, so book those early.
• Fix the Noi Bai transfer before you land. Noi Bai is 25 km to 27 km from all six, Queen Cafe, Dreamora and Super Candle arrange paid airport pick-up and drop-off, and the front desk at Aira Kim Ma closes at 22:30, so a late flight needs a message in advance.
