Xujiahui Collection Book Building is another difficult attraction in Xujiahui. It is not far to see from Xujiahui Catholic Church to the north. This is the earliest modern library in Shanghai, the Xujiahui Collection Book Building, built in 1847. In 1956, Xu Jiahui Collection Building was merged into the Shanghai Library, which specializes in foreign literature published before 1950. Remember that in the 80s and 90s, when I went to the Shanghai Library to check the literature materials, because there was no Internet at that time, some earlier books and magazines would be told to store in the Xujiahui Collection Building, which was not open to the public at that time. In the 1990s, Xujiahui area built a subway station, and the relevant departments considered demolishing the building. After the call of famous intellectuals such as Ba Jin, it was retained and vigorously repaired, and it was reopened to the public in July 2003. Today's Xujiahui Library not only extends the functions of reading services, literature collection, etc., but also expands the functions of literature research and development and exhibition tourism to meet the needs of society for human cultural heritage, excellent historical buildings and old foreign literature. Now, a "tourist stop" sign is placed at the gate on the first floor. From September 1, 2021, in order to ensure the safety of historical and cultural protection buildings and collections, the Shanghai Library will renovate the internal facilities of Xujiahui Collection Building. During the renovation, the exhibition hall will be temporarily closed.
