What Is Wuzhen? An Introduction to China's Riverine Town

Wuzhen is a 1,300-year-old water town in Zhejiang Province, China. It is a National AAAAA Tourist Attraction, one of China's Top 10 Charming Towns, and a candidate for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. The town preserves a large number of traditional Jiangnan water town buildings and canal systems.

Visitors can walk along stone streets, take boat rides through canals, and experience local crafts and tea culture. Wuzhen Water Town is one of the most popular ancient town destinations in the Yangtze River Delta.

Where Is Wuzhen Located? Geography and Surroundings

Wuzhen is in northern Tongxiang City, Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province. It sits in the Yangtze River Delta, roughly between Shanghai and Hangzhou.

Some travelers ask if Wuzhen is part of Shanghai. It is not. Administratively, Wuzhen belongs to Zhejiang. It is about 80 kilometers southwest of downtown Shanghai and 60 kilometers north of Hangzhou. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal runs along its northern edge, and smaller canals run through the town itself.

The river system divides the old town into four parts: Dongzha (East Zone), Xizha (West Zone), Nanzha (South Zone) and Beizha (North Zone). Nanzha and Beizha are mostly residential areas. Dongzha and Xizha are the two scenic zones open to tourists.

Within a single day, the golden hours are early morning when mist covers the canals (roughly 5:30–7:30 AM in summer, shifting later toward 7:00–8:00 AM in winter — a window only possible for guests staying overnight inside the West Scenic Area (Xizha), which opens to day visitors at about 9:00 AM), and the blue hour at dusk (roughly 5:00–6:30 PM in winter and 7:00–8:00 PM in summer, when the lanterns switch on as the light fades) — when lanterns light up one by one against the dimming sky.

Avoid major Chinese public holidays — especially National Day (October 1–7) and Labor Day (May 1–5) (exact dates follow China's official holiday calendar and can shift from year to year) — when the town becomes extremely crowded. Weekdays are always better than weekends.

How to Get to Wuzhen: Transportation from Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou

Wuzhen does not have its own train station. The nearest high-speed rail station is Tongxiang Station, about 27 kilometers away. From there you connect by bus or taxi to the scenic area.

From Shanghai

• High-speed train + bus/taxi (recommended): Take a high-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao Station to Tongxiang Station (20–40 minutes, ¥50–100). From Tongxiang, take bus K282 to Wuzhen Bus Station (about 40 minutes, ¥5), then transfer to bus K350 to the scenic area entrance (15 minutes, ¥2). A taxi from Tongxiang to Wuzhen costs roughly ¥60–80. Total travel time: about 1.5–2 hours.

From Hangzhou

• Direct bus: Direct coaches run from Hangzhou Long-Distance Bus Station to Wuzhen, taking about 1.5–2 hours and costing ¥30–50, with departures every 30–60 minutes during daytime.

From Suzhou

• High-speed train + transfer: Take a train from Suzhou to Tongxiang Station (20–40 minutes), then connect to Wuzhen by bus or taxi. Total time: about 1.5 hours.

Getting Around Inside Wuzhen

Dongzha and Xizha are separate scenic zones about a 15-minute walk apart. A free shuttle bus runs between them from 7:40 AM to 5:00 PM, roughly every 20–40 minutes.

Inside the scenic zones, walking is the primary way to get around. Both zones are compact and pedestrian-friendly, with flagstone paths along the canals.

Boat rides are available in both zones and are one of the signature Wuzhen experiences:

• Dongzha: Single-ride ticket ¥30 per person, about 15 minutes. Private charters cost around ¥240 per boat.

Exploring Wuzhen's Two Famous Scenic Zones: Xizha vs. Dongzha

Wuzhen has two separate ticketed scenic areas: Dongzha (East Scenic Zone) and Xizha (West Scenic Zone). They sit about 1.5 kilometers apart, connected by a free shuttle bus. Each has a different character and appeals to different types of visitors.

Combined tickets cost ¥190 and are valid for one day. Most first-time visitors choose to see both, but spend the majority of their time in Xizha.

Xiza is a larger and more developed scenic spot, which is why most tourists include Wuzhen on their itineraries. It was fully restored in 2007 and has nearly 400,000 square meters of Ming and Qing buildings, 72 ancient stone bridges and nearly 10 kilometers of watercourses.

Siza is unique in its balance of preservation and visitor comfort. Traditional buildings are lined up along the canal, but behind the exterior walls you can find well-run hotels, restaurants, teahouses, bookstores and cultural venues. The area is specially designed for long-term accommodation.

The undisputed highlight is the night. As the sun fades, thousands of red lanterns light up along canals and bridges, their reflections doubling on the calm water. Most day givers leave late in the afternoon, so staying overnight allows you to experience the quietest and most atmospheric state of town-early morning mist on the water and night lit by lanterns.

Xizha also has Muxin Art Museum, Wuzhen Grand Theater, Zhaoming College, Bailian Tower and Bridge Zhongqiao. Boat tours, art exhibitions and canal-side dining are all part of the experience.

Dongzha (East Scenic Zone): A More Authentic, Local Experience

Dongzha is one of the two scenic spots in Wuzhen, which has a long history, a small area and a low degree of commercialization. It was the first area open to tourists, retaining a stronger sense of local daily life. Some areas of Dongzha are still inhabited by indigenous residents, which gives Dongzha a more realistic and less staged feeling than Xizhai.

The main attractions here are culture and history. Dongzha is the home of Mao Dun's former residence. Mao Dun was China's first Minister of Culture and one of the most important writers of China literature in the 20th century. It also has a series of small museums and studios: the Ancient Bed Museum, which houses the ornate carved beds, the indigo dye workshop that makes Wuzhen's iconic blue calico, the Leather Theater, the Coin Museum and the Woodcut Museum.

Traditional folk performances are held throughout the day, including shadow puppets, flower drum operas and high-pole boat performances. The East Gate closes in the late afternoon and there is no night viewing, so plan to visit it in the morning or early afternoon. Most tourists visit it in two to three hours.

A Brief History of Wuzhen: 7,000 Years of Civilization

Human settlement in the Wuzhen area dates back roughly 7,000 years to prehistoric times. Archaeological findings show Neolithic communities lived here, when the area was called Wudun and Wushu. During the Spring and Autumn Period, the site was on the border between the Wu and Yue states, and the Wu kingdom built defensive walls here.

The town formally took shape around 1,300 years ago during the Tang and Song dynasties. A commercial street grew along the ancient post road, and local waterways became busy transport routes. The name "zha" (meaning fence or gate) comes from the Southern Song Dynasty, when wooden stockades were built to guard against pirates. By the Ming and Qing dynasties, Wuzhen had reached its economic peak. Hundreds of shops stood along the canals, and local silk and dye industries thrived. The "Bridge Within a Bridge" is Wuzhen's most photographed spot and one of its most iconic images. It is not one bridge but two — Tongji Bridge running east-west and Renji Bridge running south-north — that intersect at a right angle.

Standing under the arch of either bridge, you can look through and perfectly frame the other one, creating the optical illusion of a bridge inside a bridge. Tongji Bridge is 28.4 meters long with a single arch span of 11.8 meters, and has been rebuilt five times through history. Renji Bridge is 22.6 meters long. Mao Dun Former Residence and Museum

Mao Dun (born Shen Yanbing, 1896–1981) was one of modern China's greatest novelists and the country's first Minister of Culture. He was born and raised in Wuzhen, and his childhood in the water town deeply influenced his writing, including his famous work Midnight.

His former residence in Dongzha is a well-preserved traditional courtyard house where he was born and spent his early years.
