With rules changing from one region to the next, it can be quite confusing for those planning a trip. What are the general COVID-19 quarantine rules and entry requirements in China?

Travelers are required to quarantine at their own expense for seven days in government-approved accommodations and in a certain circumstances, you could have three days more quarantine period. In an additional three days in quarantine at their residence or accommodation. During or after this period, travelers could undergo follow-up inspections. Additional quarantine periods, tests, or health monitoring may be required if you travel from a Chinese point of entry to another city or region. Additional restrictions may apply depending on the location you visit. We recommend that you contact your local embassy for additional entry requirements.

What do you need for entering in China

In most places, you will need to complete a 7-day isolation period in a room assigned to you by the government, followed by a week in a hotel of your choice. You could have another three days of health monitoring.

Examination/medical certification required

Upon departure, you must submit two negative COVID-19 tests conducted within the previous 48 hours and 24 hours.

Two tests must be conducted by another testing agency. A list of approved examination centers is available at https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/china/entry-requirements.

Travelers diagnosed with COVID-19 should provide evidence for two additional negative nucleic acid tests conducted at least 14 days prior to departure. And in the meantime, it's more than 24 hours apart. Additional test requirements may apply depending on the country of origin. It is recommended that you contact your local embassy to learn about the accredited testing centers and testing requirements.

The initial period of stay in China is closely controlled by the Chinese government. Hotel rooms, along with shuttle services from the airport are determined by the authorities. I am planning to stay with family / friends in China. Can I quarantine at home?

You can apply for special permission to spend your mandatory isolation period at home, if you are under 14 or over 70 years of age, if you are pregnant, physically disabled or suffering from an illness that requires home care. If approved, the authorities will fix an alarm to your door and create a WeChat group for daily reports of body temperature.

  • Will the COVID-19 quarantine period be shortened?

    The mandatory isolation period was already shortened from 14 to 7days. Any further changes will depend on the COVID-19 situation.


  • What are government quarantine facilities like?

    There are three types of centralized quarantine facilities in China: Fangcang shelter hospitals, refitted non-designated hospitals, and quarantine hotels. Foreign arrivals are most commonly placed in government-approved quarantine hotels, where facilities can be quite basic.


  • What is the mandatory isolation period like?

    During the initial 14day isolation period, you will be confined to your room. An alarm will be placed on the door to ensure you don’t leave the room, you will need to complete multiple COVID-19 tests and check in regularly with the authorities via a WeChat group.
