Tokyo hotels by area: which base fits your trip

Three areas cover most short stays: Ueno and Asakusa for the old city, Shinjuku for nightlife and the widest choice of trains, and Tokyo Station with Nihonbashi for business addresses and early departures.

Pick the area by the trip you have booked. Ueno and Asakusa suit a first visit built on temples, shopping streets and park walks, and both hotels there sit within 400 m of a station. Shinjuku suits late dinners and day trips out of the city, because nearly every west-side line stops there. Tokyo Station and Nihonbashi suit a work trip or a morning train, with the offices close and a quiet evening on the Nihonbashi side.

Tokyo hotels in Ueno and Asakusa: best for old Tokyo on foot

The east side holds the old city. Asakusa is built around Senso-ji, with the Kaminarimon gate at the head of Nakamise shopping street and the Sumida river a few minutes east. Ueno is the museum and park side, with Ueno Park, its museums and the market street at Ameyoko. The two are a few stops apart on the Ginza Line, and both suit a first visit built on temples, park walks and old shopping streets.

Tokyo hotels in Shinjuku: best for nightlife and rail connections

Shinjuku is the busiest of the three hubs. JR Yamanote, Chuo, Sobu, Saikyo and Shonan-Shinjuku trains, the Odakyu and Keio lines and the Marunouchi, Fukutoshin, Shinjuku and Oedo subway lines all call at Shinjuku, Shinjuku-sanchome or Higashi-Shinjuku. The east side is Kabukicho and the Golden Gai alleys, the west side is the towers and the Metropolitan Government Building, and the station itself is a city under the tracks.

Tokyo hotels at Tokyo Station and Nihonbashi: best for business and early trains

This zone runs from the Yaesu side of Tokyo Station into Nihonbashi. Book it for a work trip or a morning train, with Ginza and the Imperial Palace gardens a short walk west.

Check-out at Comfort is 10:00, an hour before Monte Hermana's 11:00.

Tokyo hotels near Haneda Airport and Tokyo Station: distances and transfers

Haneda is the airport all six hotels list, from 21.41 km to 25.26 km, and the ride from the terminal is a train or a taxi.

Hotel Monte Hermana is the one within a walk of Tokyo Station, 0.8 km from the concourse, which suits a morning train better than the Shinjuku or Asakusa hotels. Shinjuku Washington lists Narita Airport 77 km away, about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes by car, and Narita is the longer of the two airports for every address here, so leave more time for it than for Haneda.

Tokyo hotels by price range: what each band buys

Sorting the six by average rate gives three bands, and each band draws from a different area.

The lowest band covers both three star hotels that stand within 400 m of a station, and breakfast is the split: free at Comfort, charged at WASHINGTON R&B. The middle band is the widest choice, with a fitness centre and a quiet west side against a 2022 building near Tokyo Station. At the top, the money goes to the address, one hotel at Asakusa Station and the other in Kabukicho.

Tokyo Hotels: Metro, Food and Booking Tips

• The Yamanote loop ties the bases together. The JR Yamanote Line circles through Ueno, Shinjuku and Tokyo Station, and the metro fills the gaps: Tokyo Metro runs nine lines and Toei Subway another four, as separate operators with separate fares. A Suica or PASMO card covers both, and the Tokyo Subway 24-hour pass at ¥1,000 covers the two subway operators but not JR, private railways or the Tokyo Monorail. Toei buses inside the 23 wards charge a flat ¥210, paid at the front door, and taxis start at ¥500 on the meter.
• Eat in Omoide Yokocho and Ameyoko. Omoide Yokocho and Golden Gai, the two lanes of tiny bars and eateries in Shinjuku, are where the evening starts, and Nakamise at Asakusa is the snack street on the approach to Senso-ji. Ameyoko, under the tracks at Ueno, is the daytime market of fish, fruit and cheap eats.
• Book before cherry blossom season. The blossom weeks in late March and early April, and the autumn foliage weekends in late November, are the first to sell out in Asakusa and Shinjuku. Weekday nights run below Friday and Saturday all year, and Japanese public holidays lift the whole city, so those trips need booking well ahead.
• Narita is far, Haneda is close. Haneda sits on the bay inside the city and the Tokyo Monorail or a taxi covers it quickly, while Narita lies well to the east and is served by the Narita Express and the Keisei Skyliner. Check which airport your ticket names before picking a base, because the difference is a long ride either way from Shinjuku.
