The idea of a troll living under a bridge originates in Scandinavian folklore, but actually came into existence in Seattle when the giant Fremont Troll was created in 1990, in part to help revitalize the area. The troll, which visitors are welcome to climb on, is holding a real Volkswagen Beetle, as though he had snatched it from the road above.
