I stayed at a hotel that was 35mins by taxi from West Slope, but 2h20mins from North Slope. I did want to see 天池Heaven Lake from both locations, so if I'd stayed at or near North Slope, getting to West Slope would have been inconvenient. In both locations, it takes about 1h45mins to get to Heaven Lake from the entrance, and you change buses about halfway up.On West Slope, you come straight back down from Heaven Lake, changing buses on the way. You can also go to Jinjiang Grand Canyon on the West Slope. The North Slope has the waterfall, and when you're on the second bus down from Heaven Lake, they stop at a few different areas. You have to change buses a few times, even if you want to stay on and go straight to the entrance.Because I was staying 2h20mins away from the North Slope and it took a long time to get to Heaven Lake and back, I didn't stop and look around.North Slope was a lot busier and more stressful than West Slope. I preferred West Slope. However, Heaven Lake/Tianchi/天池 is amazing and I'm glad I saw it on both slopes.I would recommend staying at North Slope as there's more going on, and you can relax and enjoy coming down the mountain. All the hotels I wanted on North Slope in my price range were booked up at Midsummer, so if you go at this time, I recommend booking in advance.

First of all, of course, you can't miss the Tianchi Lake in Changbai Mountain. Standing on the peak at an altitude of 2,189 meters, overlooking the mirror-like lake, my heart was filled with shock. The lake water is clear and transparent, and the surrounding peaks are reflected in it, as if you are in a fairyland. 🌲Then, we went to the Changbai Mountain Waterfall Group. The waterfalls here are of various shapes, some are like the Milky Way pouring down, and some are like white silk hanging in the sky, with roaring water and magnificent momentum. Along the way, you can also enjoy the dense primeval forest and feel the original charm of nature. 🏰In Changbai Mountain, the humanities and customs are also intoxicating. We visited the local folk village and experienced the unique Manchu culture. Tasting authentic Manchu cuisine and watching wonderful Manchu song and dance performances gave me a deeper understanding and knowledge of this land.

After my first visit to Baekdu Mountain Cheonji, I visited Jangbaek Falls for the second time, and this was my third visit. The calm and gentle waters and the emerald color were so pretty. If you plan to visit all three places in order and make a day trip, you can have a fulfilling Baekdu Mountain tour, so I highly recommend it.

Convenient to use the ticket, just scan your passport to enter. Be careful not to enter the wrong passport number.

When you arrive at Baekdu Mountain, there are many scenic spots, so you have to choose. If you have a long trip or plan to spend most of your trip around here, I recommend seeing them all. Otherwise, I recommend making a plan in advance and thinking about which ones you want to focus on.

What & Where is Changbai Mountain?

What is Changbai Mountain?

Changbai Mountain is a huge dormant volcano with a crater lake (Heaven Lake) at its peak. It’s one of China’s most sacred mountains, and home to rare animals like sika deer. You can visit year-round: winter brings snow-covered forests and cozy hot springs, while summer has lush green valleys and wildflowers. Whether you want to take photos of the lake, soak in hot springs, ski, or go rafting, there’s plenty to keep you busy.

What to See at Changbai Mountain (Top Attractions)

What to See at Changbai Mountain (Top Attractions)

Each slope has unique spots—here’s what not to miss:

1. North Slope (Most Convenient for First-Timers)

The most popular slope with the best facilities—great if you want to see lots of attractions without too much hassle:

  • Heaven Lake: The star! Take a shuttle + short hike to get there. From the North Slope, the lake looks round, and you can see the volcanic crater clearly. It’s only open on calm, cloudless days.
  • Changbai Waterfall: A 68-meter-high waterfall fed by Heaven Lake. In winter, it freezes into a huge ice waterfall—super cool for photos.
  • Green Deep Pool: A small lake with bright green water, surrounded by pine trees. In winter, it’s frozen and looks like a piece of jade.
  • Underground Forest: A 3km wooden walkway through an old-growth forest. You might spot squirrels or rare plants if you’re lucky.

2. West Slope (Best Panoramic Views of Heaven Lake)

Less crowded than the North Slope—you’ll get a different view of the lake:

  • Heaven Lake: To reach it, you have to climb 1442 stone stairs. It’s tiring, but the view is worth it—the lake looks like a crescent here, and you can see far across the water.
  • Jinjiang Canyon: A 70km-long canyon with red volcanic rocks and thick forests. Hike the boardwalk to look down into the valley.
  • High Mountain Garden: In summer (July–August), wildflowers (azaleas, rhododendrons) cover the slopes—like a colorful carpet.

3. South Slope (Quiet & Less Crowded)

The least developed slope—perfect if you hate crowds:

  • Heaven Lake: The trails here are wide and gentle (no steep stairs). You can take photos of the lake without lots of people in the way.
  • Yalu River Source: The start of the Yalu River—clear streams run through the forest, and it’s super peaceful.
  • Rime Ice: In winter, the trees are covered in white rime—like something out of a fairy tale.

What to Prepare for a Trip to China?

  • Visa & Entry Tips China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy now covers 54 countries, incl. the US, UK, Canada, and Brazil, allowing up to 10 days during layovers. Learn more about China Entry Tips to land in China easily.
  • Getting Connected VPNs are vital for accessing Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc in China. Set one up before arriving. China eSIMs are the easiest option for data and bypassing restrictions. Pocket Wi-Fi devices work best for group but are pricier and require pickup/return.
  • Money Exchange & Tax Refunds Exchange money in China banks (better rates than airports). ATMs accept foreign cards, but notify your bank first. For tax refunds, spend over ¥500 at stores with a "Tax-Free" sign. Keep receipts and get forms stamped at customs before departure.

Must-Have Apps in China

  • China Payment Apps Forget cash. Chinese use Alipay (I like it better) or WeChat Pay to pay for everything in China. Scan a QR code at noodle stalls, metros, even temples. Link your foreign Visa/Mastercard before landing.
  • China Map Apps Amap (Gaode Map) & Baidu Map (limited English) is what locals use, with real-time navigation, metro/bus routes, and traffic updates. Apple Maps does a good job too if you're already an IOS user.
  • China Transport Apps Street taxis are cheap, but drivers rarely speak English. Use China Taxi App like DiDi (China’s Uber)—set your destination in English, pay by Alipay.
  • China Travel Apps 15+ China trips taught me: Use Trip.com. It's the best English app for booking China trains/flights/hotels + finds Trip.com deals.
  • China Dating Apps Locals use Tantan (China’s Tinder) and Momo. WeChat’s “People Nearby” works too, but expect language barriers unless your Mandarin’s decent.
  • China Food App Use Meituan (also helps find nearby restaurants) or Ele.me for food delivery—both have English mode. No English menu in restaurants? Scan the QR with Alipay's translator.
