Overview of Kobe Airport

Opened in 2006, Kobe Airport is located on a reclaimed island just off the coast near Kobe Port. Thanks to its close proximity, travelers can reach central Kobe in around 15 to 20 minutes. The airport mainly operates domestic flights, offering easy connections to major cities such as Tokyo, Sapporo, and Fukuoka. International services depart from Terminal 2, with routes linking Kobe to destinations including Taiwan, Seoul, Nanjing, and Shanghai.
Transportation from the airport is simple and efficient, with options like the Port Liner automated train, airport buses, and taxis. The Port Liner reaches Kobe Animal Kingdom in just one stop and arrives at Sannomiya in under 20 minutes, while onward travel to Himeji, Osaka, or Kyoto is also quick and convenient.
Kobe Airport: How to Get from the Airport to Downtown?
Getting from Kobe Airport to downtown Kobe (using Sannomiya as the example) is a breeze—the airport’s close proximity to the city is a big plus. Below, we’ve rounded up the travel times and the pros and cons of each transportation option to help you get up to speed with Kobe’s transit in no time.
Transportation | Driving time | Pros | Cons |
Port Liner Monorail | About 18 minutes | Affordable and fast, with frequent service, direct to Sannomiya, and easy transfers. | Traveling with large luggage can be less convenient. |
Airport Shuttle Bus | About 25 minutes | No transfers needed—ideal for travelers with large suitcases. | Departures are infrequent, and travel time depends on traffic—you may encounter traffic jams. |
Taxi | About 20 minutes | Go straight to your destination—save time and effort, perfect for group rides. | It’s on the pricier side, around US$19.15 . |
Self-Drive / Car Rental | About 20 minutes | Enjoy a highly flexible itinerary, ideal for planning trips to nearby cities. | In Japan, you’ll need to get used to right-hand-drive vehicles, and parking in urban areas is less convenient. |

Kobe Airport #1 | Port Liner Monorail

Image courtesy of Kobe New Transit Co., Ltd.'s official website
Riding the Port Liner monorail is among the easiest ways to travel from Kobe Airport into central Kobe. This automated train takes you straight to Sannomiya Station in about 18 minutes without any transfers, and services typically run every 5–10 minutes throughout the day. A one‑way adult fare is approximately US$2.10, making it an affordable, smooth, and rapid choice for visitors. The stations and trains are designed for convenience, so managing luggage is simple and stress‑free.
Kobe Airport #2|Airport Shuttle Bus
It’s about a 25-minute ride into the city on the shuttle bus from Kobe Airport. The bus stop is right by the airport exit—super convenient—and services run directly to Sannomiya, Shin-Kobe, and other popular spots, so there’s no need to transfer. It’s especially handy if you’re carrying bulky luggage or you’re new to the local transit system, and the buses themselves are roomy and comfortable.
Kobe Airport #3|Taxi
Taking a taxi from Kobe Airport to downtown takes about 20 minutes and costs around US$19.15. The taxi stand is right in front of the terminal and operates 24/7, making it ideal if you’re carrying lots of luggage, in a hurry, or traveling with a larger group. No transfers—head straight to your destination. Quick and convenient.
Kobe Airport #4 | Rent a Car and Drive Yourself
Kobe Airport hosts several car rental companies, and you can book ahead or arrange a car on arrival. Driving into central Kobe or to nearby cities is a breeze—it's only around 20 minutes to downtown. Having your own wheels lets you plan your itinerary with flexibility, making it ideal for families or groups. Just keep in mind that cars in Japan are right-hand drive and traffic keeps to the left, so give yourself a little time to get used to it at first.

Kobe Airport: Late-Night and Red-Eye Flight Options
Currently, Kobe Airport does not operate international late-night or overnight services. That said, certain domestic flights within Japan may arrive between 10:00 and 11:30 PM. The last Port Liner train departs at 11:45 PM, which is generally sufficient for reaching downtown Kobe as long as your flight is on time. If there is any concern about delays, reserving a taxi or securing a rental car via Trip.com in advance can help ensure a smooth onward journey.
Travelers arriving on late domestic flights who prefer to stay close to the airport overnight may consider the Kobe Portopia Hotel. Situated on the same artificial island, the hotel is directly connected by the Port Liner, and even after train services end, it can still be reached by taxi or rental car in around 10 minutes.

The zoo was very clean and well-maintained. You can get close to the animals and enjoy a variety of them. The shoebill exhibit is particularly rare, and it's interesting to see it not moving at all. There is also a food court where you can get a light meal. You can bring your own food and drink, so it would be nice to bring a packed lunch and eat it there.

Kitano Ijinkan Street is a traditional building preservation area located in Chuo Ward, Kobe City.
There are many Western-style buildings here that were built during the Meiji and Taisho periods, which are called "Ijinkan" by the Japanese. Kitano Ijinkan Street is a quiet place suitable for travelers who like to take a walk. It is even more attractive at night.
If you are planning to come from Nankinmachi, you can take the City Loop directly to Kitano Ijinkan Station, then walk along Kitano-dori and Yamamoto-dori, and then walk south.

I went for a walk with a friend on Christmas Eve!
The Starbucks on the way up Kitanozaka is very stylish, as it uses the original foreign style building 💃
Because it's the Christmas season, the buildings around town are decorated with Santa balloons and stuffed animals, making you feel like you're in a foreign country 🎅
There are several sweet shops along the way, and I think the fortune tellers at Fortune Telling King near the Ijinkan are (personally) likely to be accurate, so be sure to find them!

Although there are many slopes, there are many sights to see, such as the Uroko-no-Yakata and the Weathervane-no-Yakata. There are also many cafes nearby, so there are plenty of places to rest if you get tired.
The view of the Kobe cityscape from the top of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is particularly spectacular.
This is a spot that you should definitely visit.

Kobe Airport Guide|Must-See Arima Onsen

Arima Onsen is one of Kobe’s most popular hot spring areas, and Kin no Yu is among its most famous public bathhouses. Its signature is a golden-yellow, iron-rich spring that leaves your skin feeling silky-smooth after a soak. If you’re visiting Kobe in the fall or winter, it’s the perfect spot for onsen lovers to experience the city’s local hot spring culture.

Excellent stay! I was in town for Ayumi Hamasaki's concert, and the venue was right across the street, just one block away. The hotel is also conveniently located near Citizen's Plaza Station, which is why I chose it. The hotel itself is grand and impressive, with a spacious and comfortable lobby. I arrived in the morning before check-in, so I relaxed in the lobby. There's even a convenience store inside the hotel, making it easy to grab anything you need. The room was very spacious, and the window offered a great view. While it's an older hotel, what truly matters is the comfort and overall feeling for guests, not just having the newest gadgets or facilities.From€36

Overall, our stay was good, especially the location. The room is a bit old but still well maintained.
However, we were not happy with one aspect of the service. A staff member (possibly a manager or senior from the F&B team) was not very professional and came across as quite rude.
He physically blocked us from entering the breakfast area without listening to our explanation. We clearly mentioned that our friend was already inside and had a table, and we were just trying to confirm the table number. However, he insisted we go to Level 1 for breakfast and did not allow us to explain further.
We had to go back and forth between the lift, trying to contact our friend, which was quite frustrating. Only after we showed him a photo did he finally allow us to enter.
What surprised us most was that the restaurant was actually quite empty, with many available tables. We don’t understand why we were told it was full and asked to go elsewhere.
We hope the hotel can improve staff communication and professionalism to avoid similar situations in the future.From€62

This colonial-style hotel is imbued with a strong maritime theme from the lobby to the bar, restaurant, and executive lounge. Every detail, from the ceiling fans, shutters, telescopes, heavy wooden desks, and leather chairs in the rooms, to the tropical plants and wicker weaving in the restaurant, and the magenta swan display rack and fabric sofas in the lobby, exudes a refined charm with a sense of history.
The hotel breakfast was also quite good, with a satisfying variety and excellent quality. This time, my room included a minibar and executive lounge access. The minibar was superb, with delicious complimentary chocolates and snacks for drinks, as well as local beer and fresh juices. However, please note that the executive lounge does not allow children, so unfortunately, I couldn't experience it fully this time, only went in for a quick look. I really like this hotel and usually book two 20 sq.m. rooms when traveling with my family, which I did this time too. We arrived around 10 AM, dropped off our luggage, and headed out, returning for check-in after 9 PM. A male staff member mistakenly thought we'd booked one room, but after clarifying, we were given two. Upon entering, we noticed the room type differed from what we'd reserved; we received the 16.5 sq.m. layout. The difference was in room size and amenities; the 20 sq.m. rooms have a desk, a small dining table, and two chairs. I immediately contacted the front desk, but to no avail. Then I spoke with Trip.com, who said there were no other rooms available for an exchange. While getting ready, I found hair on the bathroom wall, a strange noise when turning on the hot water tap, and a missing button on the bathrobe. I contacted Trip.com again, and they offered a points compensation. I hope Trip.com's display pages accurately reflect reality and that the hotel assigns rooms according to reservations.From€37

Compared to Kyoto, the Monterey in Kobe offers much better service. Sona is quite small, and lately, there's been too much of a Korean presence there. Although the hotel is a short walk from the station, it's still easy to find. There is indeed a red-light district nearby, making it a bit noisy and messy (though understandable). The room layout is reasonable, the TV supports screen mirroring, and the toiletries are generously provided, with the DHC lotion being particularly good. Don Quijote is just a short walk away, and it's very convenient to get to Sannomiya Station and Kitano Ijinkan (home to the famous 'Life Toast' and the 70-year-old coffee shop), all within walking distance. The breakfast selection is rich and delicious, with the bread being a pleasant surprise.
On a side note, you should definitely avoid the Monterey in Kyoto. Their unfriendliness towards Chinese guests is blatant, especially from the middle-aged Japanese female receptionist! She denied us available rooms unless we insisted and argued on the spot. She also reneged on a promised room type change, even rolling her eyes when a colleague confirmed it with her.🙄From€43

Overall, it's pretty good, a comfortable chain hotel.
Don Quijote is directly opposite the hotel, which is really convenient for picking up little things. The big subway station isn't very close, so if you have a lot of luggage, you might want to reconsider, otherwise you'll be dragging it across a lot of cobblestones, and your hands will get pretty sore.
The hotel's location is probably in a bustling area. After 8 PM, there are many local 'energetic' young guys around, some drinking until 3 or 4 AM. The soundproofing isn't great, so if you're a light sleeper, I wouldn't recommend it. Behind the hotel are various local pubs, which can get very noisy at night.

This hotel is recommended for family trips.
While the entire building exudes a sense of history, both the exterior and interior are extremely luxurious, and the grounds are used lavishly. The hotel's abundant use of natural stone, particularly within the building, and its on-site wedding venue, highlight its former luxury status. While the hotel shows signs of age, it is well-maintained and clean.
The hot spring water is rich and contains a high amount of iron, making it impossible to see the bottom of the tub, and the iron solidifies outside the bathtub. It was a memorable experience for hot spring lovers.
The service was also very courteous, and despite our late check-in, we were accommodated promptly. Breakfast offered a wide selection of Japanese and Western dishes, a wide variety of drinks, and homemade dishes like scrambled eggs and simmered pumpkin. We were very satisfied with both the variety and the taste.
Overall, the hotel offers excellent value for money. It's only about an hour from the Osaka Expo site, making it a recommended base for travelers from Kobe, especially during times when hotel prices in urban areas are soaring.From€28

We had a great 1 night stay at this hotel!
This was a wonderful experience! Although we only spent 1 night here, as this was meant to be an overnight stop between cities in our travel road trip, this left such a good impression on us, that we would like to come back to Akashi just to stay in this hotel again.
The architecture and the hotel design is very cool, 50's kind of vibe, but it's new of course.
The hotel has a club lounge where we could unwind after the drive with complimentary snacks and drinks, including alcohol, and all was free and unlimited.
The room was super spacious and designed nicely, with a huge hot tube jacuzzi, and since we took the ocean view room, the view overlooking the ocean and bridge was just breath-taking 👌
The breakfast was just right, and they totally accommodated my meal requests and accomplished to have a very good result...
5 stars here and I would totally want to come back!From€137

The English proficiency of the local staff is appallingly bad. I went to drop off my luggage and was told I couldn't check-in yet as it was too early.
After finally checking in, I discovered my room was right next to the elevator. When booking, I had specifically requested a room away from the elevator, quiet, and non-smoking. It's my fault for not reconfirming with them, so I had to drag my luggage back to the front desk to change rooms. The new room was still on the street side, right next to the elevated highway, and directly opposite Kobe Station – you can imagine how noisy it was.
This is an old hotel that's been renovated. You don't need a key card for any of the elevators, so female travelers staying alone should definitely be mindful of their safety. The quality of the renovation can only be described with a 'heh,' the details are just dreadful. Forget the small details, the door wouldn't even close automatically; you had to manually push and pull it to make sure it latched properly. The mini-bar light switch had an intensely bright light that was dazzling at night. Amenities weren't replenished on the second day, not even the drinking water.
The staff passage, which also serves as a fire escape, was left wide open until 8 PM, indicating a lapse in safety management.
The water pressure and temperature in the shower were unstable – hot one moment, cold the next, and then the water flow would suddenly diminish.
I don't even want to comment on the breakfast; it felt worse than what you'd get at a slightly better budget hotel. The only made-to-order hot dish was an omelet. Every single cup was endlessly covered in limescale and scratches.From€73

The hotel's location is great, nestled between Sannomiya and Motomachi stations, making it super convenient for getting around. It's also on a very bustling street, so you just step out and there are plenty of dining options. Despite that, the room was very quiet and spacious – we even had room to open our luggage without a problem. Plus, they offer complimentary snacks in the afternoon! I'd definitely stay at The b again next time I visit; it's a solid recommendation.From€30

This stay was in a Japanese-style room. The layout was conventional, not very spacious, and a bit dated, but the cleanliness was good. The hotel's two elevators are quite small, leading to long waits during peak hours, which is inefficient. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious and noteworthy.
The bathhouse is divided into public and guest-only sections: the public bath on the 2nd-3rd floors doesn't provide towels but has lockers; the guest-only bath on the GF floor offers hand towels but no lockers, so it's advisable not to bring valuables. Overall, the experience was decent.
The hotel's hillside location makes walking a bit inconvenient, but they offer a shuttle service to the station! You can call the front desk to book it!From€104

Very satisfied with this quiet and clean hotel. I'll definitely book again next time. I also understand the hotel's restriction on children under 12; it's so quiet I didn't want to leave. Ambiance: Quiet. Service: Attentive. Cleanliness: Spotlessly clean, with a great design.From€181

The front desk service is very good. The room is very good, the floor-to-ceiling corner window has a beautiful view outside the window, the room facilities are very new, the room facilities are very complete, the room coffee and the refrigerator are very rich, the drinks are full, very considerate. The shampoo, conditioner and body lotion are all Bulgari, the experience is very good. They also thoughtfully prepared men's and women's skin care travel packs, which is very attentive. I would like to especially praise the staff of Hiroko-san who has been serving us since we received them during our stay. They are very enthusiastic, very attentive and very nice. The experience brought to us during our stay was very comfortable and very good. I look forward to meeting Hiroko-san again next time I stay.From€382

The hotel's location is excellent, offering a quiet retreat while being just across the street from Sannomiya Shopping Street, and to the west, it connects directly to Daimaru department store. The hotel is very clean. We booked a 'leisure twin room' which even had a small massage chair and was quite spacious; we could easily open up two large suitcases. The staff were also very friendly and quickly helped us call a taxi. The Italian restaurant on the second floor is absolutely delicious! The cocktails are great too, and not overpriced. We stayed for 7 days and ate there several times. Sometimes after a long day of sightseeing, we didn't want to go out, so we'd just order room service. We'll definitely choose this hotel again when we visit Kobe next time.From€62

Amazing hotel with professional staff. The hotel room is very modern design which fits 2 adults, so clean and quite well organised. The hotel has a functional space in 3rd floor with free flow of water, drinks, desserts and coffee 24 hours offering. All are exceptional yummy. Has 3 sets of washing and dryer machines on 9th floor. The front office staff is so helpful recommend us to try Kobe beef with nicely presented a name card so the Kobe beef restaurant take good care of us with discount too. Will definitely stay again in this hotel. Food, transportation, 24 hours convenience store, Kobe Tower is just around our walking distance. Actual place is the same as the photos show. The shower tap add credit with small bubbles good for face washing and hot water comes immediately. Everything is fine, no complaint.From€37

It's also very close to the highway bus stop, which offers direct service to USJ, making it even more convenient than traveling from Osaka. Plus, you can easily catch the airport shuttle from here. How early should I arrive at Kobe Airport?
For domestic routes, airline check-in and baggage counters typically stop accepting passengers about 60 minutes before takeoff.
