China Train Business Class vs Second Class: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Author's Profile Picture

For most travellers, business class is definitely worth it for most people on high-speed trains in China when they go on trips that last for more than four hours, on trips which occur at night or in the early morning hours, or on any trip taken during holiday seasons where the second class is likely to sell out all its standing ticket options. For any journey which takes less than an hour, there is no need to upgrade to business class.

China Train Business Class vs Second Class: Key Differences at a Glance

Chinese high speed trains (those with codes starting with G, D, or C) usually offer three seat classes, with a fourth available on some services. From cheapest to most expensive:

  • Second class (二等座): Standard class. 3+2 seating layout.
China Train: Second class seats
  • First class (一等座): Modest upgrade. 2+2 layout, wider seats.
China Train: first class seats
  • Business class (商务座): Top tier on most trains. 1+2 or 1+1 layout, often with near lie flat seats.
China Train: business class seats
  • OnSpecial class (特等座): Found on some trains, similar in features and price to business class. English booking platforms often label this as "VIP Seat" or "Premium First Class."

English terms used for these classes differ from one platform to another, hence creating some confusions among users. In case there are two options on a train such as “Business Class” and “VIP Seat”, then Business Class will be the higher option. For information on the classes available on any particular train, then 12306 is the best reference point.

China High Speed Trains: Seats, Legroom, Privacy, and Onboard Comfort

China High Speed Train

The second-class seating consists of an airplane style seat with just a little bit more leg room than economy seating for shorter flights. It includes a fold-down table, USB ports and regular power supply points in new trains, and minimal reclining. The headrest is rigid and doesn’t have any adjustment options. Second class can be enjoyed comfortably during journeys up to two hours, and it still acceptable up until four hours.

The problem with the second class is not the seat, but rather the train carriage. There are approximately twenty rows of seats per carriage, each carrying five people. The overhead storage area fills up quite fast. When traveling to China on its national holidays, particularly during the Spring Festival travel rush or Golden Week, the trains sell tickets for standing passengers in the second-class compartment. This practice is not extended to the business class compartment, making this a good point for upgrading to business class.

New aspect that should be highlighted: some of the G trains have introduced Quiet Carriage for the second-class passengers. Passengers who board such carriages promise not to make any noise and keep their phones on mute mode as well as avoid making voice calls. This is clearly visible when booking in the relevant trains.

Business Class is significantly different. In G-train services running long-distance routes like Beijing to Shanghai and Beijing to Guangzhou, there are reclining leather seats that can be laid down almost completely flat. There are foot-rests, privacy wings in some seats, individual lights, and attendants who cater exclusively to passengers traveling in business class. The number of seats in a single coach rarely exceeds 24 or is less than 10. The coach will also provide a complimentary meal box on premium services.

The latest Fuxing smart EMU train series (the CR400AF-Z model and others, running on premium routes such as Beijing to Shanghai route) offers this service in their business class seats which offer a semi private cabin arrangement. The seat will be provided in an individual partition cabin where the seat can fully recline, and a screen is provided. You can identify if your train is Fuxing smart EMU by checking the train number (beginning with 'G') and model number in 12306/Trip.com during the booking process.

The cost of business class tickets can be 2.5 to 3.5 times higher than those of second-class travel. Long-distance prestige routes represent the top range in terms of cost. Short-distance routes also follow the same proportion, although in absolute terms the difference may be quite small.

It is worth comparing high speed trains to domestic aviation, especially in case of Beijing-Shanghai route. While in terms of air flight the time of flight alone will take about 2 hours, due to airport procedures, waiting for take-off, security checks, etc. the whole journey will take about 5 hours. High speed train covers the same distance in 4.5 hours (centre-city to centre-city), and always within minute accuracy. At times of high demand, business class ticket on the high speed train is cheaper than economy class on the plane.

Folks!! This hotel is truly worth me writing a novel-length review for 😭✨ I just stayed at the Grand Lapa Macau and, as a hotel enthusiast, I was absolutely blown away! From the moment I stepped into the lobby, I felt like I'd been transported into a European palace film 🎬 Crystal chandeliers + marble spiral staircase + vintage murals – every casual snap turns into an Instagram-worthy masterpiece 📸 My朋友圈 (friends circle) is already exploding with everyone asking, ”Which amazing hotel is this?!” The room is even more incredible!! The bed is so soft it feels like sleeping on clouds ☁️ The bathtub is huge, and you can enjoy Macau's night view while soaking 🌃 The mini-bar is completely FREE!! Drink and snack to your heart's content – my budget-conscious self is thrilled! 🥳 The service details are legendary! The front desk guy was super gentle, proactively helping with luggage and bringing welcome fruits 🍇 The room was sparkling clean every day, and they even neatly arranged my skincare products – a true delight for my OCD! The location is also a huge plus! It’s a 5-minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf and 10 minutes to Sands, making shopping and dining incredibly convenient. Strolling downstairs at the hotel in the evening, with the sea breeze and the lights, was so romantic it made me want to get married on the spot! 💍 Cons:

Our stay was absolutely fantastic! The location is super convenient, and the room was spotless with really comfortable bedding. He Yao and Ya Ning provided genuine and attentive service. During our stay, the cleaning staff did an incredibly thorough job, even helping with laundry, which was a wonderful touch. The environment is pleasant, and overall, it's a solid choice – definitely no regrets. It was a very satisfying stay, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

This was my first stay at the Grand Millennium Beijing, and it exceeded my expectations by far. It wasn't overly crowded, so it felt very peaceful and quiet. The swimming pool is a major highlight, integrated seamlessly with the gym on a different floor, creating a spacious, high-ceilinged area with a Southeast Asian vibe. I encountered many Hong Kongers there, from business travelers in the elevator to an elderly couple in the executive lounge; they were all very humble and friendly. The surrounding area boasts a wide variety of restaurants, and the Fortune Plaza Mall is practically a canteen for Beijing's white-collar workers. The night view is also top-notch, with the CCTV Headquarters lit up beautifully. A pleasant surprise was bumping into a celebrity while working out – the 'rooster among roosters,' haha. The Grand Millennium is fantastic, giving me every reason to return. The male manager who handled my check-in was very gracious, and the service was just perfect.

The room's cleanliness was quite good, which is the main reason for the positive rating on hygiene. Facing the back garden with sealed windows, the room was relatively quiet. The breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of options—Chinese, Western, and Japanese—but the taste was really disappointing; none of it was good. It’s my first time not feeling full after a hotel buffet. The poor quality of the food is why I gave a low score for the facilities.

I had a pleasant stay overall. The location is excellent—right in front of a metro station, with bus stops nearby, making it very easy to get around Beijing. There is also a nice bakery downstairs and several shops in the area, which was very convenient. The hotel provided all the amenities I needed, including an iron, and I was especially grateful that the staff arranged an early check-in for me, which made a big difference after my journey. The only minor downside was that my room's window faced the inner courtyard, so there wasn't much natural daylight. Also, the hallway rugs made it a bit difficult to roll luggage around. However, these were small inconveniences compared to the overall positive experience. The hotel was comfortable, well-equipped, and very convenient for exploring the city.

Compare to the other family room, the family suite is not newly renovated, it looks a little old. The location is at the end of wangfujing steeet. But overall we had a great stay. This hotel boasts a prime location in the heart of Wangfujing, directly across from the subway entrance (Line 8, Jinyu Hutong Station). It offers instant access to the subway, with Line 1 providing direct routes to Universal Studios and Xidan. Popular spots like Nanluoguxiang and the Temple of Heaven are just two subway stops away, making city-wide travel incredibly convenient. It's also right next to Wangfujing Pedestrian Street, with APM, Yintai Shopping Center, and the snack street all within easy walking distance – perfect for shopping and dining. Tiananmen Square and the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City are a mere 10-15 minute walk, meaning you can catch the flag-raising ceremony without the hassle of a taxi or traffic. Old city landmarks such as Houhai, Nanluoguxiang, and Beihai Park are also easily accessible, ensuring all major attractions are covered. This central location allows for an extra half-hour of sleep each day, making for a much more relaxed and enjoyable trip.

This is my second trip to Beijing this year, and I chose to stay at the Livefor hotel in Chongwenmen again with my son. I guess that makes me a repeat customer, right? 😁 Overall, I'm quite satisfied. The location is super convenient, just a few minutes' walk from Chongwenmen subway station, making getting around incredibly easy. There are malls right downstairs and across the street, so with a child, I don't have to venture far. Cleanliness is my top priority when choosing a hotel, which is why I've picked Livefor twice. Next up is the bedding, especially the pillows – they're just the right firmness, ensuring a really comfortable sleep. The soundproofing is also good; once the window is closed, you can't hear any outside noise, and it's very quiet at night. My son loved the mini-fridge in the room; he bought some drinks and cheese, and he really enjoyed that. The service was also excellent and thoughtful. Check-in was quick, the staff were friendly and gentle, and they were always ready to help with any issues. All in all, the transportation, accommodation, and dining experiences were all great, offering good value for money. I'll definitely prioritize staying here again on my next visit to Beijing.

I booked this hotel for its convenient location, and it certainly didn't disappoint! There's a bus stop right outside, and the subway entrance is only about 100-200 meters away. Plus, it's next to Tong Ren Tang and super close to the Forbidden City and Jingshan Park. The service was also incredibly warm; they even brought me a hot chrysanthemum tea when I came back from a concert, which was so thoughtful! The breakfast was delicious, and I especially loved their flavorful cold dishes. Unfortunately, the TV had no signal due to a wiring issue, and I accidentally booked a room without a window, ugh! The hotel is conveniently located in Beijing's Chaoyang District, close to the Kerry Center and Guomao (CBD) areas. It's about an 8-minute walk to Soho, and there are plenty of restaurants nearby. The concierge staff were very prompt and welcoming, opening car doors and guiding guests to the front desk. The front desk staff were also very friendly. The room was spacious and bright, and the 2-meter king-size bed was incredibly comfortable. All the drinks and juices in the mini-fridge were complimentary. The hotel breakfast offered a wide variety of options. The lobby bar had excellent value for money for lunch, and there was live music in the evenings. The fitness center is open 24 hours (after 11 PM, you access it by swiping your room card). The gym space is huge, with a full range of equipment and daily group classes. The swimming pool is 1.2 meters deep and 30 meters long. This is honestly the biggest and best fitness center I've encountered in a hotel, both domestically and internationally! They even have personal trainers available for one-on-one guidance. All in all, a fantastic stay!

I came to Beijing by high-speed train for a concert, and since Beijing's public transportation is so developed, I booked a hotel near West Station. It's a 10-minute walk from West Station to the hotel, and then a 5-minute walk from the hotel to the subway station, which is very convenient. The room was clean and tidy, and the breakfast was plentiful. Kids under 1.2 meters eat for free, and you can register as a member to get an extra breakfast. The mini-fridge wasn't cooling, so I called and they replaced it. The only downside was that even with the air conditioning set to the lowest 16 degrees, the room temperature stayed at 25 degrees and wouldn't go down. I called three times about the A/C over three days, and each time they said they'd send someone to check it, but the issue was never resolved. This is my only regret.

First off, every staff member we encountered at the hotel was incredibly warm and welcoming, from the front desk to the housekeeping team. They were all very polite and proactive in helping resolve any issues, which was fantastic! However, we did encounter quite a few minor problems during our stay. 1. Check-in time: We arrived at 1:30 PM to check in, only to be told our room wasn't ready and we'd have to wait about an hour. We waited at the front desk until 2:30 PM without any notification. After we prompted them, the front desk called housekeeping, and it wasn't until 3:00 PM that a staff member finally took us to our room. 2. Upon reaching the room, the staff member informed us we'd have to wait for the room key. This was the first time I've ever encountered this situation. We waited two or three minutes before another staff member brought the key over. 3. We booked a two-bedroom suite. Both bedrooms and the living room had TVs, but only the TV in one bedroom worked. The TVs in the other bedroom and the living room had no signal, meaning if our family wanted to watch TV, we all had to squeeze into one room. 4. When we took a shower in the evening, we realized that perhaps the room was cleaned too hastily. The entire suite only had two sets of toothbrushes, and there was no shampoo or shower gel. It made me wonder if the room was properly inspected after cleaning. 5. The toilet paper in the bathroom was placed too close to the trash can, making it easy for the toilet paper to touch the bin. The towels were placed directly above the toilet, which could easily lead to contamination from toilet bacteria. 6. The next morning, we went down for breakfast and asked a staff member at the lobby bar where breakfast was served, and they didn't even know there was breakfast! That was quite surprising. Overall, the hotel offers good value for money, and the staff are great, but there were simply too many small issues. Perhaps training needs to be strengthened or management processes need to be optimized.

This experience was a bit disappointing! First, the good points: the accommodation package included a high-quality afternoon tea set, and the staff were very friendly! Now for the not-so-good parts: I'm not sure if it was due to the increased traffic during the May Day holiday, but the room cleaning was unsatisfactory. There were hairs everywhere, on the sofa and in the corners of the walls. I wonder if the previous guest had a pet. We had to request a second vacuum cleaning! The evening BBQ buffet was definitely something to avoid. I've never had such a terrible BBQ. It felt like an immature dish added on a whim without any proper menu development! There were no labels at the buffet counter, and all the BBQ items were mixed together. We had to ask the staff, who then had to ask the chef, and the chef would then explain each item one by one. It was basically a 'mystery box' buffet. The scallops were overcooked and a bit tough. There was no juice at the buffet, and a star-rated hotel actually served cold mixed noodles (liangpi)! The worst part was that the BBQ meat and grilled tendon weren't fully cooked. They lacked chewiness and that grilled flavor; it was more like they were par-boiled first and then grilled. The overall temperature of the food wasn't very hot, and if you didn't eat it quickly at your table, it would get cold. The only highlight was that the crayfish were decent. The watermelon at the buffet wasn't as good as the watermelon in the afternoon tea set. The dinner menu was actually worse than breakfast.

What I want to praise most is the incredibly thoughtful hotel service! During our stay, my child accidentally bumped their mouth. The lobby manager immediately came over to check on us and even specially sent a cute little plush toy and ice cream to comfort the child, which was very heartwarming. The butler service was also incredibly thorough. They thoughtfully pre-ordered a light breakfast suitable for young children, which was perfect for our little one's taste. They also proactively helped us arrange a late check-out, so we didn't have to rush with a child, which was incredibly convenient and considerate. The hotel's family-friendly facilities are comprehensive. The playground is large, with a soft play area suitable for younger children and various classes for kids over five. A truly great vacation isn't about an abundance of facilities, excessive service, or a high-brow experience. It's about that genuine sense of relaxation it gives you. During our two days at The Brickyard, we saw so many smiling faces. Everyone was happy, whether they were staying, dining, or just hanging out. You see glazed tile elements everywhere, and the design language in every corner, from the tile kilns, chimneys, and caves, to the flooring decorated with shattered glazed tiles. The former glazed tile factory has been reborn. There's no TV here, and while there's a gym, hot springs, spa, and nail salon, the facilities themselves fade into the background. Check-in, afternoon tea, breakfast, dinner, the rooms, the transportation – everything was perfect, just like coming home. It’s only 1 kilometer from Mutianyu Great Wall, and the hotel provided a private car transfer and even gifted us tickets. In the evenings there’s a bonfire, and in the afternoons, handicraft activities – absolutely no dull moments. The hotel is located in Bohai Town, nestled in a small mountain valley, with an abundance of negative oxygen ions and far from the noise of the 'Sleepless Valley.' All you hear are birds chirping, and you see the distant Great Wall and chestnut trees everywhere. Oh, and laughter, of course. Highly recommended, we'll definitely be back! I originally booked a 5-night stay (2+3), but ended up moving to the Marriott after only 2 nights. The Kempinski is a well-established five-star hotel in the embassy district, boasting all the old-money charm with its restaurants, lounge, bakery, gym, and shopping mall. It's also conveniently located by the Liangma River, perfect for a leisurely stroll. However, the service was a bit of a mixed bag – the executive lounge and in-room service were incredibly thoughtful and proactive, leaving a great impression. On the other hand, the professionalism of the sales and front desk teams, who are at the forefront, needs significant improvement. First, the room type we booked clearly had two bathrooms, yet Ctrip's description only listed '1 bathroom.' This watered-down, downgraded description is likely due to the sales department's lack of attention. It was precisely for this reason that we booked a combination of 2 nights in a suite + 3 nights in a family room. However, the front desk staff we encountered on the first day of check-in were stiff and cold throughout, making us feel uncomfortable. Consequently, we decisively canceled the remaining three nights and moved to the Marriott.

Now, let's talk about the service, which I found quite baffling: 1. The day before, they called to ask about my preferences and room type requirements. I said 'the same as last time,' but the actual room was completely different. 2. I had sent a package ahead of time and specifically mentioned on the phone for it to be placed in my room. However, when I arrived, it wasn't there. I had to call the front desk, and only then was it delivered to my room. 3. There were no umbrellas in the room. You have to go to the front desk and provide your room number to get one, which I found incredibly confusing. 4. Since they changed their logo, the aesthetic has really gone downhill. Just look at these pink slippers (referring to image 1) – they completely clash with the overall room style. 5. And don't even get me started on the hairdryer; it's just awful. Now for the good parts: Yesterday, on our way from the airport to the hotel, we wanted to pre-order room service. Thanks to the front desk's coordination, we were able to eat as soon as we checked into our room, which was fantastic.

This established hotel truly has a lot of character, with an elegant and upscale ambiance. The service is incredibly attentive and thoughtful. Staying here with my parents was a comfortable and respectable experience – we all really enjoyed it! After booking, on the day we were supposed to check in, a hotel staff member named Jennifer proactively called to ask about our room preferences and requirements, and even upgraded our room. Her service attitude was absolutely outstanding. The location is super convenient for daily life. We went to eat in Beisihuan and shopped at the outlet mall, both of which were a relatively short and easy drive in Beijing. The buffet breakfast was also rich in variety and delicious, earning praise from my parents too. We'll definitely book here again for next year's birthday.

Regent Beijing was my choice, a hidden gem of a luxury hotel in the city center. It's incredibly convenient, right next to the Dengshikou Station exit on Line 5, where you can spot the hotel's side entrance sign. It's also very close to Jinyu Hutong Station on Line 8, making it super easy to get to popular spots like Wangfujing, the Bird's Nest, Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple, Xidan Joy City, and THE BOX. This stay added such a gentle and healing touch to my Mayday concert trip! As a Trip.com Diamond member and IHG Platinum member, I was pleasantly surprised by the member benefits. They upgraded me to an executive room for free, which offered fantastic views and an elegant, spacious interior. Although it's an older hotel, and some of the soft furnishings show their age, the comfortable details more than made up for it. The bedding was soft and skin-friendly, with eight types of pillows to choose from. All the toiletries were enriched with Vitamin E, perfect for Beijing's dry climate, instantly curing my travel fatigue. The front desk even thoughtfully provided complimentary breakfast! The breakfast spread was incredibly rich, with a full array of Chinese and Western dishes. There was a live noodle station, exquisite desserts, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a variety of drinks. The ingredients were fresh, and the flavors authentic; every bite showed true quality. A hearty breakfast in the morning truly boosts your happiness for the entire day. A special shout-out to Cindy at the front desk for her consistently gentle and meticulous service. She even added me on WeChat, responding to my needs promptly, and gave me a farewell gift before I left. These little details truly highlight the luxury service standards. With such thoughtful hospitality and impeccable service, I'm confident that the Regent will be my top choice for my next visit to Beijing!

The service was excellent, but unfortunately, the hotel is quite old with an outdated overall design. The sink was at thigh-level for me, and the shower stall was made of glass, only covered by a thin curtain that still let light through. This was a challenge for someone like me who has trouble sleeping. The hotel is conveniently located near many restaurants and supermarkets, and it's only a ten-minute walk to the subway station. The breakfast buffet suited local tastes, but it was exactly the same every day for three days straight. Overall, it's not as good as a newer business hotel. I'm not sure what the standards are for a 5-diamond hotel when booking through Ctrip.

The room was spacious, clean, and tidy. What I liked most was the TV, which offered a wide variety of free TV series. Ordering takeout was also incredibly convenient (watching 'Dream of the Red Chamber' while enjoying bubble tea and braised dishes was just bliss). Although the hotel was a bit far from tourist attractions, it actually allowed us to take less popular routes, avoiding the crowds. This meant we had a good chance of getting a seat for the entire journey instead of standing, which was a huge relief (I honestly couldn't handle the crowded Beijing subway anymore during the last few days). Finally, a big shout-out to the front desk staff! The two ladies working on the evening of Jan 2nd and the afternoon of Jan 3rd were both gentle and enthusiastic. The hotel also provided excellent luggage storage service. Five stars! 💓💓💓💓💓

Our first impression of the hotel was wonderful, friendly staffs and comfortable environment greeted us at the entrance. Special mention to 袁欢 whom helped me find a suitable room for my family and I with upmost patience and eagerness. The view in the bedroom was great as the windows are full length. Breakfast had various options too. I visited the Epicure at 45 to be surprised by the astonishing 360 view of Shanghai. You get to experience such fine dining while enjoying the scenery around you. On a Tuesday night, we got to visit the bar on floor 47. Accompanied by jazzy tunes from the pianist and singer, I enjoyed the vibe-y night. The hotel gave me a positive experience; family-friendly and comfy. I’d recommend this hotel!

I traveled solo with my 14-month-old toddler, and he was absolutely spoiled by all the hotel staff. Everyone treated us with so much kindness and care. Jerry checked us in and out and even gave me a cute fridge magnet. The breakfast was delicious with so many options to choose from, the rooms were cleaned daily, and bottled water was always replenished. Xiao Jun also took great care of us, and Yinhe Juan felt like an auntie to us. We looked forward to seeing them every morning at breakfast. They all made my stay feel so warm and welcoming — truly like a home away from home. As a five-star hotel, both the service and facilities are quite good. I've always heard that Westin's family rooms are great, and I got to experience one on this trip to Shanghai. I won't go into detail about the good aspects, but I do have a few suggestions: 1. For a family room, there actually aren't many kids' amenities, just a few stuffed animals. For example, a step stool could be provided in the bathroom for children. 2. The sink in the bathroom constantly accumulates water on the inner side. I'm not sure if it's due to the countertop's angle or something else, but I hope it can be adjusted. 3. The toilet paper holder in the WC is too far inward, making it inconvenient to grab paper. If you pull hard, the roll might fall off. Moving the holder forward, reversing its direction, or moving it to the right side would all be good solutions. Overall, I hope Westin continues to improve as a high-end hotel. I look forward to experiencing it again next time!

We stayed here for 3 nights while in Shanghai and enjoyed our time there. The location is excellent ( walk right out onto Nanjing Pedestrian street) The staff is welcoming and friendly. The hotel is clean and the room was spacious! Check in was a breeze. We opted for the family room and it had a separate living area and bedroom. It was super nice. We had a view of Nanjing Rd and heard zero noise from the bustling road below us. They provided complimentary tea and coffee in the room along with a mini fridge filled with various items ( drinks, beer, water and chocolates) They provided a safe, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, slippers and robes. It was my sons birthday they day we arrived and they sent a cake to our room:) I had mentioned that in the booking along with a request for a view. Both were obliged :) The breakfast was excellent with a ton of options ( both American and Asian cuisine) There is plenty of seating and great views! The concierge was fantastic! They arranged a riverboat cruise for us and an amazing massage for my mom and I. The spa was great and we had the most relaxing massage. The spa staff was fantastic and so friendly. They even took us in very last minute without issue. Though it is separate from the hotel- they gave a fantastic discount for being a guest there. Our stay was a 10/10 and I would stay here again!!

The room at Pudong Shangri-La was impressively large and very comfortable, making the stay relaxing and pleasant. Visiting during the festive season was a bonus, as the hotel was beautifully decorated with Christmas decorations that added a warm and cheerful atmosphere. The complimentary Chinese dinner at the Osmanthus restaurant was a delightful surprise — the food was delicious and the portions were just right. Breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of options catering to different tastes. However, I was quite disappointed by an incident related to hygiene. I witnessed a pastry server dropping a croissant on the floor and then placing it back onto the tray. This was unacceptable for a hotel of this standard. Before, a hotel was just a place to sleep, but this time I discovered that a staycation, just chilling at the hotel, is a truly unique and incredibly comfortable way to recharge. You don't have to venture out; you can completely rejuvenate your mind and body. This hotel is like the Haidilao of hotels – the service is incredibly attentive. I booked all the available wellness classes in advance through the hotel's mini-program, filling my entire day. ******* singing bowl sound therapy, various yoga sessions, breathwork and meditation, body restoration, and different versions of Baduanjin (Eight-Section Brocade) – it was a fully immersive relaxation experience that kept me engaged all day long. Like Haidilao, the hotel staff were exceptionally attentive and caring throughout. They offered constitution tests, chakra assessments, restorative treatments, guided various classes, and even provided travel photography services. Many of these activities are simply unavailable at other hotels, like meditating and doing yoga at sunrise while watching peacocks. After check-in, I received a thermos filled with a wellness drink tailored to my constitution. After happy hour, there was a salad, and a warm, comforting soup was delivered before bed. The next morning, another thermos with a hot drink was waiting outside my door. The self-service breakfast drinks were also delicious, natural, and refreshing; I completely lost interest in milk tea after trying them. The entire hotel exudes a relaxing ambiance. As you step out of the elevator, there's a faint ginger scent. The bedtime fragrance is citrusy, which is incredibly calming, and there are 15 types of pillows to choose from. I especially loved the white noise machine in the room; it has 9 sound effects to choose from, helping me fall asleep quickly, and it also charges my phone. Guests also receive custom clothing and slippers. They resemble chef's uniforms and are exceptionally comfortable. Regardless of age or gender, wearing this outfit to classes, meals, or just strolling around felt completely natural, fostering a relaxed atmosphere throughout the hotel, without any sense of formality. No long-distance travel, no crowded attractions – just quietly staying at the hotel allowed me to fully replenish my depleted energy. This niche staycation is truly a wonderful way for modern people to recharge, offering both ease and healing.

The breakfast in the morning is very good, it is self-service, and there are freshly made noodles to eat. If you are thirsty, you can go downstairs at any time to have some drinks and fruits, which are all included in the hotel package. Why the deduction? Like many reviews wrote, the water in the pool here is really too hot. It is the hottest of all the hot springs in Shanghai that I have been to. It feels too hot. I saw that several children could hardly soak in the water for a while. I don’t know why so many people complained. I saw that the management was still saying in the comments that it met the hot spring temperature requirements. What they said is that your water is too hot, and they are giving you suggestions. Everyone in the hot spring said that the water was hot, not that you violated any regulations... It takes talent to reply like this

We booked the Kempinski for Children's Day, hoping to create a wonderful memory for our child. As a popular spot for its 'influencer-worthy' pool, the Kempinski truly lives up to its reputation. It has a distinct beauty both day and night, and I really felt the charm of Shanghai. The driver told me that many people come specifically to take photos of the hotel with the Oriental Pearl Tower – it’s a classic shot. Now for a few minor issues: Our room had a great view (as shown in the picture), but the bathroom felt a bit dated and wasn't ideal. For a bubble bath, the water pressure wasn't strong enough, and the bubbles didn't quite materialize. This is a small point. Also, I found the Black Forest cake to be just average. However, the burger we ordered for in-room dining (Picture 7) was absolutely delicious! It was huge, and I ate the whole thing. It came with truffle mayonnaise, and the patty was firm and juicy – highly, highly recommended! The price was definitely 'Kempinski-level,' but the taste, like private chef quality, was excellent. I asked for an extra children's amenity kit for the room, and they provided a small bag that even included a Children's Day toy (Picture 14). I also bought some ice cream, chocolates, and macarons from the lobby. The ice cream was the best – the strawberry flavor I had even had large pieces of real strawberry, which was a pleasant surprise! Ms. Julia Li was incredibly thoughtful and suggested I place the order through Dianping, showing great consideration for the customer. Big kudos to her! The moment we stepped onto the balcony, we saw all sorts of insects, and there was even a dead fly in the sink – quite disgusting. The hotel service was also a bit odd; they put a bottle of shampoo by the sink, and I assumed they mistook it for hand soap. Check-out was at 14:30, which was a nice bonus! **Dining Experience** We ate at three different restaurants over four meals. * **Fisherman's Wharf:** We had lunch here. They only offered set menus, 698 for two people. My husband, our child, and I shared one. It only included salad, soup, steak, and yogurt. The taste was mediocre, definitely not worth the price. It's the kind of place you visit once in a lifetime. It was slightly better than the one at Atlantis. * **The Source All-Day Dining:** We had the dinner buffet, 698 for two people. Children under 120cm were free. Honestly, there wasn't much to eat. My child had some sashimi and a few skewers, while I ended up eating a bowl of blanched greens. It would have been better to order takeout. * The **breakfast buffet** was definitely worth it. They had many live cooking stations: made-to-order omelets, ramen, Jianbing Guozi (savory crepes), and a station for blanched vegetables. * **Cai Feng Lou:** We had lunch here on our second day. There were various awards displayed at the entrance. We ordered a special lobster, cod, and some vegetables. I thought the cod was decent, but overall, the dishes were quite salty. However, this was indeed the best restaurant in the entire hotel. They even gave us a free dessert because they forgot one of our dishes. The bill was over 800 for three people – the best value for money! I also ordered takeout twice! You have to go to the hotel entrance to pick it up yourself, which is very inconvenient! I highly recommend takeout from Songjiang University Town – it's delicious and affordable! **Travel Photography** Booking a session was very difficult. They called me the day before, and the only slot left was Sunday morning at 9 AM. We got three free photos and a video. The shoot lasted 20 minutes, as we had to rush to breakfast. The final photos were good, and the editing was quite exaggerated. No one would guess I weigh 170 pounds! Hahahaha. #TravelingWithParents #SeniorFriendlyTravel #FamilyWithKids #InterContinentalShanghaiWonderland

Wujiaochang Commercial Area Shanghai|9.08km from city center
Coming to Shanghai, I specifically chose the Pagoda Hotel (Fudan University, Shanghai Branch) that I've been eyeing for a while. I booked the Deluxe Family Twin Room for four people, and the experience truly exceeded my expectations! First of all, the hotel's location is fantastic! It's right in the Wujiaochang business district and KIC (Knowledge Innovation Community), next to University Road, which has a ton of trendy restaurants and cafes. In the evening, we went to a folk bar nearby, and it was a wonderful experience. It's also super close to Fudan University; we even took a walk on campus in the morning, which was lovely. Back in the room, it was incredibly spacious, absolutely not cramped for a family of four. There were two large beds, plus a tatami mat that could be used for sitting or lying down. We had tea and snacks on it during the day, and there was plenty of space to move around. The smart room control system was so convenient; a simple voice command could open or close the curtains and turn the lights on or off. Through the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, we had an unobstructed view of Wujiaochang's city skyline, which was truly expansive. The hotel's service was also excellent. The front desk staff were very welcoming, and the butler even asked about our accommodation preferences in advance. There's also a free self-service late-night snack bar after 9 PM, which was a pleasant surprise! The mini-bar was complimentary, and all the in-room amenities were well-stocked. Plus, food deliveries were brought up by a robot, which was both convenient and private. The hotel also has a gym and a laundry room, which is incredibly thoughtful for families with children, allowing us to wash and dry clothes anytime. Finally, a quick reminder: hotels in Shanghai typically don't proactively provide disposable toothbrushes, but you can always ask the front desk if you need one. However, this is a minor detail, and overall, this Pagoda is definitely worth recommending, especially for family trips – you can't go wrong with it!

Hongqiao Airport/National Exhibition and Convention Center Shanghai|15.59km from city center
I stayed at the Hyatt House Shanghai Hongqiao CBD and found it to be a very solid choice, especially for business travel. The location is excellent, situated directly opposite the railway station and the airport, which makes onward travel extremely convenient. The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable, providing everything needed for a short business stay. The staff are friendly, helpful, and efficient, which adds to the overall positive experience. Breakfast is perfectly adequate and does the job well. For business trips in particular, or if you need to continue your journey by train the next day as I did, this hotel is a very convenient and comfortable option. Overall, I had a good stay and can definitely recommend it.

Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center Shanghai|12.35km from city center
The room is more suited for young people, and the cleanliness is pretty good. The communal area downstairs at night is excellent for working. The front desk staff was also nice, promptly getting me a bottle of water when I was thirsty. When checking out, I needed to go to the North Bund for business and didn't want to come back for my luggage. Unfortunately, when I asked the front desk if they offered a luggage delivery service, they weren't clear and said no. For a major city like Shanghai, there really should be more diverse services to make travel easier for us.

Hongqiao District Shanghai|8.21km from city center
I've found a real gem in this modern tower. The hotel occupies floors 15 to 18, and the reception is a 10/10 – the staff are super friendly, they offer coffee, tea, and little pastries, and there's also a very comfortable coworking area. The rooms are like a small studio with a kitchenette: microwave, washing machine, dryer, a full-size fridge, and plenty of closet space. The bed and pillows are extremely comfortable, and the shower… wow! The water pressure is amazing, absolutely wonderful. The door is floor-to-ceiling, so steam from long showers doesn't escape into the rest of the room. The sink area is a bit small, but it's fine for one or two people. Special mention: the magnifying mirror and the Japanese toilet – a real luxury that I really appreciated. We were so comfortable that we ended up extending our stay by 3 more days. The only downside: the metro is about 1 km away, maybe a bit more. But the value for money is so good that what you save on the hotel easily covers a taxi ride. From now on, this will be my go-to place in Shanghai. Highly recommended. I'll definitely be back.

Is China Train Business Class Worth It Over Second Class?

A simple way to decide is by journey length:

  • Under 1 hour. Second class is sufficient. The upgrade is unlikely to be worth the difference in cost.
  • 1 to 3 hours. Depends on the situation. For early morning or late evening trips, or when the journey doubles as work time, business class is useful. Otherwise second class is reasonable.
  • 3 to 6 hours. This is where the comfort difference matters most. Travellers who are tall, have back issues, or want to rest will benefit from business class.
  • 6 hours or more. Business class is worth strong consideration. The recline and quieter carriage make a significant difference on long journeys.

Other factors that favour business class:

  • Travelling with elderly parents or anyone who tires easily
  • Tall passengers, especially over 1.85m, where second class legroom is tight
  • Overnight or early morning trips where rest matters
  • Arriving for an important meeting or event
  • Travelling during Chinese public holidays, when second class is oversold with standing room tickets and aisles become crowded

Factors that favour second class:

  • Short journeys under an hour
  • Group or family travel, where the multiplier on four or more tickets becomes significant
  • Budget conscious travellers
  • Passengers who can sleep easily in upright seats

A useful way to weigh the choice: if the rest, quiet, and arrival condition gained from business class is worth the price difference to you, the upgrade is worthwhile. If not, second class on a Chinese high speed train remains one of the better standard class rail experiences available globally.

How to Book China Train Tickets as a Foreign Traveller

A few practical points for booking Chinese high speed rail tickets as a foreign traveller:

  • Use a platform with English support and international card acceptance. Trip.com offers an English interface, accepts international cards, displays the carriage diagram for seat selection, and shows refund terms before checkout.
  • Enter your passport name exactly as it appears on the document. Middle names go in the given name field.
  • Book early for popular routes during peak periods. Tickets release approximately 15 days before departure. Off peak routes usually remain available closer to the travel date.
  • Select your seat at booking. For business class on a 1+2 layout, the single seat offers the most privacy. For 1+1 layouts on Fuxing smart EMU trains, all seats are private partitioned compartments.
  • Bring your passport to the station. Most major stations use self service gates that read foreign passports directly. If the gate cannot read the passport, a staffed lane on the side handles manual checks with a handheld scanner.
  • For refund and change rules, 12306 is the official source. Trip.com displays the applicable terms before checkout.

Mistakes Foreign Travellers Make When Booking

  • Passport name does not match the booking. Middle names entered in the wrong field is the most common cause. Station staff cannot correct the booking at the gate. The traveller has to refund and rebook, which usually means missing the train. Enter middle names in the given name field, not omitted or combined with the surname.
  • Booking outside the release window. Tickets are released approximately 15 days before departure. Business class on Beijing to Shanghai, Shanghai to Hangzhou, and Shanghai to Shenzhen can sell out within hours during peak periods. For these routes during Golden Week, Spring Festival, or summer school break, booking on the release date is often necessary.
  • Confusing class names at the booking stage. "VIP Seat" and "Premium First Class" are not the same as Business Class on most trains. They refer to special class (特等座), which sits between first and business in features and price.
  • Missing the business class lounge. Major stations including Beijing South, Shanghai Hongqiao, Guangzhou South, Shenzhen North, and Hong Kong West Kowloon have dedicated business class lounges with seating, drinks, and quiet space. Lounge access is included with the business class ticket but is not advertised at the gate.
  • Locating the business class carriage on the platform. Business class is in Car 1 or the last car of the train, not the centre. Platforms at major stations are long, so confirm the carriage number on the platform display and walk to the marked area before the train arrives.
Trip.com is an international online travel platform that provides 24/7 customer service in various languages including Engligh, Japanese, French, Korean, etc. It also offers a user-friendly interface and easy booking process, and accepts various payment methods including international credit cards, Paypal, AliPay and Wechat Pay. Search live fares and check seat availability for both second class and business class on Trip.com Trains.
