Curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, the Encounters sector of Art Basel Hong Kong 2023 focuses on the theme, "This present, moment." Glass-Kantor notes that "…its incongruous comma is fitting for a time of uncertainty in which the future seems increasingly unpredictable." This idea is reflected in the 13 massive installation works included in the sector. Offering perspectives on the precarious and unique, Art Basel Hong Kong 2023 brings together works from artists such as Trevor Yeung and Jaffa Lam.
Presented by Blindspot Gallery, Yeung's "Mr. Cuddles Under the Eave" (2021) is a work that personifies material objects and the natural environment to express what human relationships are all about. The installation makes use of 13 money trees suspended from the ceiling, but they are just within reach of the tallest person – a metaphor for the sense of uncertainty in everyday life.

Lam's "Trolley Party" (2023) evokes his childhood memories of female workers and opens up their world to Art Basel Hong Kong 2023 visitors, who can wander into a peaceful interior assembled using 14 meters of recycled and found fabrics and six chairs fashioned from industrial trollies. Lam's installation is presented by Axel Vervoordt Gallery with Zilberman Gallery

What's the best time for a visit?

What currency is used over there?

Hong Kong's currency is the Hong Kong Dollar (HK$), which comes in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000. What are the official languages?

Standard Cantonese and English are widely used, with 88.9% of the population speaking Standard Cantonese. Cantonese, English and Mandarin are the main languages in Hong Kong. When going around in taxis, remember that not all drivers in Hong Kong can understand or speak English. A good way around this is to download the app for taxis. The app translates Cantonese into English to help you know where you are going. This also makes your Hong Kong visit safer and more cost-effective.

Pointers for the living arrangement:

First things first: Book your accommodation in advance. If you are on a tight budget and a hotel stay is not viable, a licensed guesthouse in Hong Kong is a practical form of accommodation. Do some research on licensed guesthouses before booking one prior to your trip. 👉 Learn more about arrangements for inbound travel and take time to prepare for them.

Sorting out the transportation during your stay:

Travel to Hong Kong - Causeway Bay

Be on time for the shuttle transfer procedure at the Hong Kong International Airport. Shuttles will only wait for 10 minutes for the Seat-in-Coach (SIC) transfers. Private cab transfers have a waiting period of approximately 20 minutes.
Enjoy exploring the city by using the MTR. The Hong Kong MTR system is an extensive, tourist-friendly, and inexpensive means of transportation. Visitors can download the MTR Mobile app to give them complete information about the MTR system, including stations, routes, fares, and travel.
Get an Octopus Card. An Octopus Card is a contactless smart card used to pay for most forms of public transportation in Hong Kong. Octopus Cards can easily be bought at convenience stores. It can carry up to HK$1,000 in value and can also be used in fast-food restaurants.

Bargain hunt at the heart of the Shopping paradise:

From bargain goods in Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui to designer shops in Times Square in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong is an unparalleled shopping destination. Shop to your heart's content, but always be wary of items that might be too good to be true. Make this trip a treat to make up for all your hard work each and every day!

Love everything about this hotel! The location is very nice, even it's not in the middle of Tsim Sha Tsui but close enough to walk, ~10mins for walking to Tsim Sha Tsui. K11 Art mall is in the middle on the way from hotel to Tsim Sha Tsui so we stopped by for popular tea shops, CHAGEE and Heytea, everyday during our stay in this hotel. We booked premier room to enjoy the sea view and it's worth it! The hotel is located on the Mody road which have a beautiful Christmas decorations that can be seen from our hotel room, Avenue of Stars is also across the road. Room is true to pictures, all amenities are provided everyday, all staffs we met are easy approach and helpful. Highly recommended for anyone who's looking for luxury hotel in a budget!

The lounge was pretty good. The highlights were the breakfast and the afternoon tea with milk tea, which were excellent. The happy hour drinks were also great, though the caps on the sparkling wine were a bit tricky and could easily cut your hand. I stayed here over a decade ago and had a great impression of the housekeeping staff. This time was no different; the room was cleaned very thoroughly, and they were very nice. Jocelyn Xu at the executive floor check-in was incredibly helpful and enthusiastic. Thumbs up! I'll definitely be back.

Overall, it was a great stay. The location is super convenient, making it easy to get to Victoria Harbour and other attractions. Right next door is the Grand Century Place mall, so you have plenty of dining options. The hotel's environment and cleanliness were also good. We chose a room with a 1.5-meter bed, which is quite rare for Hong Kong. Essential toiletries like toothbrushes, shampoo, and body wash were all provided, so there was no need to bring our own. One of the best things about Hong Kong is that you don't need to buy bottled water; we didn't buy any water during our four-day trip. Just carry a reusable water bottle, and you can refill it almost anywhere, which is very convenient and eco-friendly – definitely something to learn from. The only minor issue we had was on the first night; we were given a room with a connecting door, and the soundproofing was terrible. The family next door had three noisy kids who kept us up until late, so we didn't get much sleep. However, the hotel was very accommodating and moved us to a quieter room the next day.

Wan Chai and Causeway Bay Hong Kong|4.81km from city center
The hotel is located in the city center and close to shopping areas in Causeway Bay. It is also close to the Causeway Bay metro so it is easy to travel around Hong Kong. The hotel is clean, and Ms. Chalette, the staff member, was helpful throughout my registration. My room is on the 34th floor, close to the swimming pool. However, the pool is closed due to the weather. The gym is on the B2 floor, which is in the basement area. I haven’t checked the gym, though. To get to my room, I have to change the elevator on the 31st floor to another elevator.  The regular elevator is slow but the elevators from 31 to 34 are fast. My room is big with a high ceiling, and clean. There is a big bathtub in the room as well. The view is awesome which is Victoria Harbor and Victoria Park. However, the heater in the room didn’t work properly so it was always colder inside. Overall, except for the heater that didn’t work, and the slow elevator, I do enjoy my stay here. If it is not expensive, I might stay here again.

The room is quite small; it's fine for one person, but might be a bit cramped for two. It's close to the Hong Kong Coliseum, about a 15-minute walk. It's also near Jordan MTR Station, roughly an 8-minute walk away. There are 7-Eleven convenience stores and many restaurants nearby. The hotel facilities are a bit old but clean, and for this price in this area, it offers good value for money. The hotel also has a buffet breakfast for under 70 RMB, which is enough to fill you up.

I recently stayed at the Best Western Plus Hotel Kowloon and overall had a pleasant experience. The location is excellent — conveniently situated with a bus stop right in front of the hotel and surrounded by a variety of restaurants, making it easy to explore the area and find dining options. The room was spacious and well-equipped with all the amenities I needed for a comfortable stay. However, I was somewhat disappointed with the cleanliness of the bathroom, as I noticed a stray hair that appeared to have been left from a previous guest. I believe this is an area where the housekeeping standards could be improved to ensure a more consistent level of cleanliness. Despite this minor issue, my stay was generally enjoyable, and I appreciated the convenience and comfort the hotel provided. With slight improvements in cleanliness, this hotel would be an even better choice for travelers seeking comfort and accessibility in Kowloon.

• Excellent Location: ”The location is great, comfortable environment, spacious enough, with tons of famous restaurants within walking distance, and only a five-minute walk to Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station. Highly recommended!” The hotel is located at 28 Kimberley Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, with abundant dining options nearby and just a few hundred meters from Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Station, making transportation very convenient. • Great Room Facilities: ”The room was fantastic! I booked it for the BLACKPINK concert, but the front desk lady, Elaine, kindly upgraded us for free to a newly renovated, non-smoking room for one night. Super happy! 😀😀

Booked on Trip.com for a three-night stay, including breakfast and afternoon tea. The breakfast spread was excellent. The hotel boasts a convenient location, just over 500 meters from the subway station, which is a major plus for getting around Hong Kong. You can easily walk to Victoria Harbour, the Avenue of Stars, the Clock Tower, and Kowloon Park from here. There are also plenty of dining options nearby, so overall, it's very convenient. The room was very expensive for what you get . It was the weekend of the HK marathon so maybe this affected it. The room itself was very small, but it’s Hong Kong, I get it, space is at a premium. Bed was pretty hard, but personally that wasn’t an issue for us. What was most disappointing was the “Harbour View” I paid extra for (photo attached). Our shower had no shower gel provided. The staff at the hotel were pleasant and helpful and we were allowed to leave our bags after we checked out while we spent another day in the city. The breakfast was only so so, but reasonably priced. The lifts up and down can be very slow. There’s is a rooftop pool with nice views of the city, but we didn’t use the pool. The best thing about this hotel is the location. It’s based in a nice part of central that feels local and has good access to transport networks. There’s also some great coffee shops and food options in walking distance. We are not people who spend lots of time in the hotel and used it mainly as somewhere to sleep while we explored for a few days. That said, you could find better priced options for that kind of stay. All in all it was just ok. Nothing to write home about.

The location is great, right above K11 and Tsim Sha Tsui. It's walking distance to Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Victoria Harbour, and other areas, making it suitable for business travelers. There's not much to do or see around the hotel, and finding places to eat is inconvenient. The room was quite small, and the quality of the complimentary disposable slippers and toothbrushes was very poor. The bed was also on the smaller side and the bedding wasn't very comfortable. They didn't even clean our room the entire day we were out, only coming to clean it after 10 PM. There was no apology or compensation offered whatsoever, almost as if they didn't care. This meant we went to bed very late and didn't get a good night's rest. When the housekeeping staff changed the bedding while I was still in the room, there was a lot of dust, which triggered my nasal allergies. It was truly a terrible experience.

1. **Location:** We chose to stay two nights in Tsuen Wan because we were visiting Hong Kong Disneyland. The hotel's location is excellent, not far from Disneyland or Tsim Sha Tsui. Right downstairs is a transportation hub with MTR and bus connections, making it incredibly convenient to get anywhere. Multiple skywalks connect the hotel, shopping malls, and the transportation hub – truly convenient. Downstairs, there's a pleasant and comfortable park, and across the street is a seaside promenade. The environment is nice, although there's a strong fishy smell from the sea. 2. **Room:** We had a bay view, perfect for watching the sunset, and the room was bright and comfortable. The bathroom was clean with a good wet/dry separation. There was a musty smell upon entering the room, but the bedding was clean. The shower had good water pressure. 3. **Service:** The service was quite professional and the staff had excellent attitudes. We requested a room change due to an issue with the window, and the front desk lady and housekeeping staff handled the problem patiently and thoroughly, all with a great attitude. So, despite a minor issue, our stay was very pleasant. If we come back, we'll definitely choose to stay here again.

I bought a voucher in advance for a premium room, which included breakfast and afternoon tea, and I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious the room was. There's a dedicated area by the entrance for hanging clothes and changing shoes before you get to the bathroom, which is a much better layout than some hotels where you open the door directly to the bed. The pillows were super comfortable, with both soft and firm options. Both breakfast and the Hong Kong-style afternoon tea offered a great selection.

Our stay in the Deluxe Twin Room at Harbour Plaza Resort City was a fantastic surprise! The hotel's location is superb, just a 1-minute walk to +WOO shopping mall, with over 200 shops and restaurants for all your dining and entertainment needs. It's also right next to Tin Shui Wai Park, perfect for a pleasant stroll. Transportation is incredibly convenient, with the Light Rail Ginza Station practically on its doorstep, getting you to Tsim Sha Tsui in just 30 minutes – hassle-free travel. The room itself, at 36-38 sqm, was spacious and bright. The bedding was clean and comfortable, and the entire space was tidy and odor-free, showing great attention to detail. While disposable toothbrushes and complimentary bottled water weren't provided, this is actually in line with Hong Kong's 'plastic-free' environmental policy, and the hotel offered thoughtful alternatives. The staff were warm and attentive, responding quickly to any inquiries. Our overall experience was excellent, and I highly recommend it for both business travelers and leisure tourists!
