Curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, the Encounters sector of Art Basel Hong Kong 2023 focuses on the theme, "This present, moment." Glass-Kantor notes that "…its incongruous comma is fitting for a time of uncertainty in which the future seems increasingly unpredictable." This idea is reflected in the 13 massive installation works included in the sector. Offering perspectives on the precarious and unique, Art Basel Hong Kong 2023 brings together works from artists such as Trevor Yeung and Jaffa Lam.
Presented by Blindspot Gallery, Yeung's "Mr. Cuddles Under the Eave" (2021) is a work that personifies material objects and the natural environment to express what human relationships are all about. The installation makes use of 13 money trees suspended from the ceiling, but they are just within reach of the tallest person – a metaphor for the sense of uncertainty in everyday life.

Lam's "Trolley Party" (2023) evokes his childhood memories of female workers and opens up their world to Art Basel Hong Kong 2023 visitors, who can wander into a peaceful interior assembled using 14 meters of recycled and found fabrics and six chairs fashioned from industrial trollies. Lam's installation is presented by Axel Vervoordt Gallery with Zilberman Gallery

What's the best time for a visit?

The best time to visit Hong Kong is from October to December, as the temperature is cooler with relatively clear skies than in earlier months. From May to September, the weather becomes warm, humid, and rainy during the monsoon season.

What currency is used over there?

Hong Kong's currency is the Hong Kong Dollar (HK$), which comes in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000. Cash payments are still generally welcomed when shopping or eating at local restaurants. International debit or credit cards are widely used but may incur an additional fee whenever it is used.

What are the official languages?

Standard Cantonese and English are widely used, with 88.9% of the population speaking Standard Cantonese. Cantonese, English and Mandarin are the main languages in Hong Kong. When going around in taxis, remember that not all drivers in Hong Kong can understand or speak English. A good way around this is to download the app for taxis. The app translates Cantonese into English to help you know where you are going. This also makes your Hong Kong visit safer and more cost-effective.

Pointers for the living arrangement:

First things first: Book your accommodation in advance. If you are on a tight budget and a hotel stay is not viable, a licensed guesthouse in Hong Kong is a practical form of accommodation. Do some research on licensed guesthouses before booking one prior to your trip. 👉 Learn more about arrangements for inbound travel and take time to prepare for them.

Sorting out the transportation during your stay:

Travel to Hong Kong - Causeway Bay

Causeway Bay / Source: Trip.com

Be on time for the shuttle transfer procedure at the Hong Kong International Airport. Shuttles will only wait for 10 minutes for the Seat-in-Coach (SIC) transfers. Private cab transfers have a waiting period of approximately 20 minutes.
Enjoy exploring the city by using the MTR. The Hong Kong MTR system is an extensive, tourist-friendly, and inexpensive means of transportation. Visitors can download the MTR Mobile app to give them complete information about the MTR system, including stations, routes, fares, and travel.
Get an Octopus Card. An Octopus Card is a contactless smart card used to pay for most forms of public transportation in Hong Kong. Octopus Cards can easily be bought at convenience stores. It can carry up to HK$1,000 in value and can also be used in fast-food restaurants.

Bargain hunt at the heart of the Shopping paradise:

From bargain goods in Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui to designer shops in Times Square in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong is an unparalleled shopping destination. Shop to your heart's content, but always be wary of items that might be too good to be true. Make this trip a treat to make up for all your hard work each and every day!

Proper footwear for your daily travel in the city:

Finally, wear comfortable footwear. It's likely that you'll be doing a lot of walking around in Hong Kong, say, from one shopping center to another. A pair of reliable and comfy sole footwear is a must, so you don't miss out on anything Hong Kong has to offer.

## Environment: The hotel room was quite spacious and comfortable. It's very close to Victoria Harbour, and walking to Tsim Sha Tsui East and Tsim Sha Tsui MTR stations is also very convenient. I'm not sure if I got an upgraded room type, but my room even had a walk-in closet. ## Service: The hotel room essentially met all my requirements. I chose a twin room this time because the king-size rooms were smoking rooms. Our room was on a higher floor, close to the elevator yet still quiet, and we could see a partial view of Victoria Harbour from outside. The front desk service was exceptionally thoughtful; they would proactively offer help whenever they saw us. ## Hygiene and Facilities: The hotel seems to have been recently renovated. All the amenities are quite new and very clean, though the facilities themselves are relatively classic/retro. ## Breakfast: Breakfast was a mix of Western and Cantonese cuisine. The variety of dishes was relatively rich, and the Cantonese dim sum was delicious. They offered freshly cooked pork rib or fish ball noodles/vermicelli, and the most thoughtful part was being able to add as much noodles or vermicelli as you wanted.

This was my first time staying at the Royal Garden. The hotel is clean, has a beautiful pool, nice views, and a wide selection of restaurants. Every staff member presents themselves in a professional manner, they have sincere smiles and are extremely helpful, the concierge, bellboy and housekeeping staff are very polite as well. I am especially thankful to Manager Bonny for leading her team excellently. Her team members, Polly, Ken, and Anson, all have great team spirit and were very helpful with our facility requests, as well as with the special arrangements for our tour. I am truly grateful and appreciate having them during my stay. I would definitely come back again and will surely miss their kind smiles and the feeling of being at home. A special thank you to Bonny and Polly, they made our stay in Hong Kong the best experiences, thank you!

The hotel is exceptionally clean and very well maintained. The location is decent, but once you step inside, it feels like a completely different world—modern, elegant, and relaxing. The customer service is outstanding: staff are extremely polite, attentive, and professional. Highly recommended!

The hotel is conveniently located near Moko Mall, offering plenty of dining, entertainment, and shopping options. The only downside is its direct connection only to the East Rail Line, which is a bit far from the Tsuen Wan Line (the main subway line connecting to Mong Kok and Jordan), requiring a ten-minute walk. The hotel facilities are excellent; it completely subverts the usual 'pigeon cage' impression of Hong Kong hotels with its surprisingly spacious rooms. It even has two double beds, and the lobby is also very expansive. If you're traveling as a group of four, this hotel offers great value for money.

Old and in desperate need of modernising. The bathroom was flooded after a shower as the shower cubicle door didn't have the correct seals in. However, staff were very attentive to our needs and even had a shuttle bus ( only for certain rooms) that took us to the airport, which we didn't know. At night ( in our room , anyway) was noisy, sounded like a motor elevator. Overall, not our best stay. The only thing that saves it is its location.

Simple hotel with comfort bed. It is convenient to go every where at Kowloon. Great price and the room is quiet and we had good night sleep for early morning to get high speed train. Found out outside can get 26 mini bus to there. Only no shelf for suitcase or anything to put on the table. Lucky we only have a small bag. Shower area is very small. Sink is in the bedroom very unusual design. The lift and lobby in golden colour. I liked the chairs in lobby. I feel very comfortable to sit on. But no plastic bag for rubbish bin. The room is ok but not very clean.

The room was fantastic! I originally booked this hotel because of its proximity to my destination, and when I was choosing a room, I saw options for both new and old rooms. I decisively went for a newly renovated one, even though it was a bit pricier. Thankfully, I booked in advance, so the discounted price was still good. Before checking in, I read some reviews saying the rooms were old and the facilities mediocre, which made me quite worried. But when I got to the room, I was completely blown away! The hotel tried its best to accommodate my requests, and the service was excellent. The room was so clean and bright, and there was absolutely no strange odor from the renovation, making me feel incredibly comfortable the moment I stepped inside. The space in the room was cleverly utilized, with a bench, chairs, and a long table. The two 1-meter single beds were larger than I expected and very comfortable! As for chargers, the hotel provides travel adapters, and there's a Chinese-style socket in the bathroom. Plus, there's magnetic charging on the bedside table – super thoughtful! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 The hotel is surrounded by eateries, convenience stores, Lung Heung Lau (Lotus Seed Paste Buns), Japanese ramen shops, Lung Fung Pharmacy, souvenir shops, bookstores, Cafe de Coral, BBQ meat shops, etc. There's also The ONE shopping mall nearby, which covers all your needs. The hotel is only a few hundred meters from Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Station Exit B2, just a few minutes' walk – very convenient. From Austin Station (West Kowloon), it's just one stop to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station, then you can walk within the station for 13 minutes to Tsim Sha Tsui Exit B, which is quick and easy! I absolutely loved and was satisfied with this booking and stay experience... I'll definitely come back again and recommend it to my friends. Thanks to the hotel staff for the wonderful service during our trip to Hong Kong.

For Hong Kong, this hotel offers great value for money. It's much more comfortable after the renovation, and the location is excellent, just a few steps from the bar street. However, one of the staff members at the front desk was a bit perfunctory. When I asked her where the airport bus stop was, she just said, 'go straight down this road, and the first bus stop is it.' She didn't specify that for the airport, you need to cross the road to the bus stop on the other side. There are airport bus stops in both directions, and naturally, I assumed 'the first bus stop' meant the closest one. Luckily, a kind passerby told me I needed to cross the road for the airport, otherwise, getting on the wrong bus and wasting time would have been a huge hassle. Why work in customer service if you're going to be so unhelpful? A quick tip for everyone visiting Hong Kong: always bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste.

Downstairs, there are tons of popular restaurants, plus many grocery and fruit stores, making shopping a breeze. The hotel itself is opulently decorated, with rooms offering beautiful views of either the mountains or the sea. The front desk staff were very welcoming. I'll definitely be back!

This is my 2nd time staying at this hotel. We really enjoyed our Hongkong trip because of this hotel's convenient location. We were able to shop, eat at good restaurants, and go on different adventures bec of the nearby train station. The K11 Art Mall is right across its entrance on Mody Road. The rooms were just right for 2 persons. The toiletries were complete and free except the toothbrush and shower cap which was part of the environment policy. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were even classified as soft or firm. There's also a water purifier which saved us from buying water at the convenience stores. We will stay here again if we return to Hongkong. Thank you Holiday Inn.

The hotel upgraded us to a higher floor room for free, and the view was absolutely stunning! The staff were all very polite and friendly, making our stay very comfortable. The only minor drawback is that it takes 20-30 minutes to get to the city center, but for the price, it's really worth it. The room was spacious and well-equipped, even featuring a water filter, so we didn't have to spend money on bottled water. The bed was also very comfortable and great for sleeping; my parents were very satisfied 👍🏻 However, we were located next to the elevator, so we could hear people entering and exiting. There's a shopping mall right above the hotel. If you're coming from Tsuen Wan West MTR station, please take exit C/D; there's a pedestrian bridge directly connected to the mall that leads straight to the hotel, so you don't need to walk on the street. And we didn't encounter any 'ghosts' as mentioned online, so feel free to stay here~

Be careful!!!! Our experience with Empire Hotel was very unsatisfactory. We booked the hotel thinking that its going to be like any other 4-star hotel, as the price per night was similar to others in the area. It turned out, that this is hotel was 4-stars, maybe 20 years ago. The furniture and all room equipment looks like something I’d expect to find in a cheap student rental. Destroyed, quickly fixed with tape or paint (lol), siliconed windows to provide “isolation”, neighbors that you can hear even when they’re not particularly loud. Stained carpets, no amenities like drinkable WATER! We were shocked. No toothpaste or toothbrush in case you forget yours. In our room even fridge was dirty, not to mention the state of shower or ventilation. I would rank this hotel 2-stars. If you’re a fan of white noise this hotel is for you. If not, avoid their AC at all cost! I dont know how people stay there during summer, but its definitely not normal to feel like there’s a vacuum cleaner on next to you. We complained to the staff and were told that all rooms are the same. Trip.com unfortunately was not able to help us with relocation… second great story for another time. We were finally moved to a “better room” just to find out that indeed “all rooms are the same”. We also got a couch there that didnt even stay put together… I dont want to know how much people pay for that “premium” room… Honestly, there are many better hotels in the neighborhood, give them a chance instead of staying here. Good luck!
