Curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, the Encounters sector of Art Basel Hong Kong 2023 focuses on the theme, "This present, moment." Glass-Kantor notes that "…its incongruous comma is fitting for a time of uncertainty in which the future seems increasingly unpredictable." This idea is reflected in the 13 massive installation works included in the sector. Offering perspectives on the precarious and unique, Art Basel Hong Kong 2023 brings together works from artists such as Trevor Yeung and Jaffa Lam.Presented by Blindspot Gallery, Yeung's "Mr. Cuddles Under the Eave" (2021) is a work that personifies material objects and the natural environment to express what human relationships are all about. The installation makes use of 13 money trees suspended from the ceiling, but they are just within reach of the tallest person – a metaphor for the sense of uncertainty in everyday life.Trevor Yeung, Mr. Cuddles Under the Eave, 2021. Lam's "Trolley Party" (2023) evokes his childhood memories of female workers and opens up their world to Art Basel Hong Kong 2023 visitors, who can wander into a peaceful interior assembled using 14 meters of recycled and found fabrics and six chairs fashioned from industrial trollies.
