The hotel is in a good location, not in the downtown area, but the bus is very convenient. There is a bus directly to the beach. You can visit the Britannia. The landlord's wife also has a discount card. The bus to the city is also very convenient, and it is very convenient to go directly to Princes Street and museums. The host is from Hong Kong. The wife is very beautiful. She speaks Mandarin and speaks softly. She is super young. The environment is quiet, and there is a large Tesco supermarket not far from the east. Edinburgh is beautiful and you can live here again.

Hotel Description
Ord’s Loft, situated in White Horse Close, is one of the most desirable and unique properties in Edinburgh’s old town. Positioned on the top floor of what was once the White Horse Coaching Inn, built by Laurence Ord in 1624, the loft is entered by the iconic steps seen in so many photos of Edinburgh. The outlook south over the courtyard is Holyrood Palace, Arthurs Seat, the Scottish Parliament and the Old Town while to the rear it looks up to Regent Road and Calton Hill.
The space
The loft, which is nestled in a picture-postcard courtyard at the foot of the Royal Mile, has been lovingly restored and reimagined by combining 17th Century character with modern luxuries. As this is such an historic building, the interior has been constructed with traditional building methods and materials, including exposed rafters, lime and polished plasters, with solid hardwood floors and natural fabrics like linen and wool throughout.

Prestigious Maker & Sons sofa, renowned for comfort, a drop down cinema screen and underfloor heating, are blended with genuine `Scottish antique furniture, woven tweeds and polished, lime plaster walls. The bedroom is furnished with an Harrison Spinks cashmere, super-king mattress, Scottish waney-edge oak headboard and antique furniture as well as 400 thread count luxury bedlinen. The bathroom walls and shower are lined with Moroccan ‘tadelakt’ and the sound system plays throughout the whole apartment.

The kitchen feels like it's part of the fabric of the room, subtle tones of the plaster are offset with solid brass highlights. The centre island, a salvaged Georgian kitchen base-unit with a slice of green chlorite-schist volcanic rock atop, was hand selected and cut from the Loch Sween quarry in the Mull of Kintyre. This same type of stone is renowned as the carving stone for Celtic crosses and monuments of Scotland and Ireland throughout the centuries. The timber kitchen units are handmade and appliances include, Miele fridge / freezer, Gaggenau hob with downdraft, Fisher Paykel double oven and grill, whilst the kitchen itself is furnished with traditional china and glassware and some typical Scottish whisky and snacks to welcome you to Edinburgh.

Ord’s Loft is a home from home, where the relaxed atmosphere and character of the space allows you to step back in time, whilst the location allows you to step out into the top tourist attractions and amenities of the historic city right outside your door.

HISTORY:

Beneath the outer layers of the picturesque architecture in Edinburgh’s Old Town, lies an intertwined mesh of closes and hidden alleyways and one of the most deceptively intricate areas in any city in the world, which you will be able to explore when you visit.

White Horse Close is a small courtyard surrounded by several vernacular buildings with outside steps and pan-tiled roofs. The close was originally called Ord’s Close, named after the 17th Century entrepreneur, Lawrence Ord, who created the inn, lodgings and stables for people journeying to and from Edinburgh. By 1623 the White Horse Coaching Inn was the terminus for stagecoaches and a bustling hotspot for travellers at the end of a long hard journey from London. Around the same time the close seems to have been renamed White Horse Close.

The origin of the name is a great topic of conversation because there are so many theories, though nobody knows for sure which is correct. The location has always been associated with the royal mews from the period of Mary Queen of Scots, who was an excellent horsewoman. It is said that her favourite white mare was stabled there, near to the entrance to the royal palace and at times she would secretly escape the palace in disguise, so that she could ride freely around the Edinburgh countryside. Mary Queen of Scots led a very dramatic life and was persecuted and betrayed by many during her reign at the Palace and some say that her trusted, white horse was stabbed to death in the royal mews, possibly giving vent to the name. Another suggestion is that the name comes from the White Horse of Hanover which was introduced into the Royal Arms in 1714 when the crown passed to George 1, King of Great Britain and Ireland. Whatever the correct story is, it’s sure to have a royal connection.

The White Horse Inn was on the ground floor, with the lodgings above and Lawrence Ord, could oversee his thriving business from the top floor of the building. A covered vennel slips under the building and down to the lower road where the entrance to the stables, blacksmith and stagecoaches were. The clatter of hooves and the steam from the horses would have worked its way up into the courtyard to create a real hustle and bustle of life. Luggage would have been carried up the passage for the travellers who were lodging on all floors of the guest house. Food would have been prepared and consumed by tired hungry guests, while casks of whisky, wine, gin, port and ale would have been hoisted and rolled behind the bar and swilled down faster than they could get it in the door. This close has witnessed history unfold throughout the centuries, through changes of the crown, Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite Rising, the Scottish Enlightenment and the new Scottish Parliament.

In 1639 the country was in religious turmoil which led to the ‘Stoppit Stravaig’ when many nobles and leaders of the Covenanting Party were in open disagreement of King Charles 1, and his religious doctrine. When a group were overheard in the inn to be planning a secret rendezvous to air their complaints, Presbyterian ministers gathered a mob and laid siege to them at the inn, barring them from leaving. Somehow, James Graham, the Earl of Montrose managed to escape them, met the King and but was persuaded to profess allegiance to him. Sadly, he had to pass the close again ten years later in 1650, this time, on the way to his execution for treason.

Because the courtyard was safely enclosed, its also believed that the inn was used to house the Jacobite officers during Charles Edward Stuart’s occupation of Holyrood Place during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. When you stand in the courtyard, it is easy to imagine the Jacobites raising their glasses at the inn, armed and ready to defend their Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Scotland was one of the first country’s in the world to give free education to all, so it is no surprise that during the late 18th century, there was a period of great enlightenment, characterised by an outpouring of intellectual and scientific accomplishments. Among the fields that rapidly advanced were philosophy, political economy, engineering, architecture, medicine, geology, archaeology, botany and zoology, law, agriculture, chemistry and sociology. The Royal Mile was a hotbed for some of the most notable characters of the enlightenment, Adam Smith, David Hume, Sir Patrick Geddes who all lived within a stone’s throw of White Horse Close.

In 1793, a farrier (most likely working in the White Horse stables) lived in White Horse Close and his wife gave birth to William Dick in one of the courtyard houses that now bears his name. It’s no surprise that as William grew up in this period of great learning, he became an exemplary student and notably went on to be the founder of the renowned Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies.

Towards the end of the 18th century, many of the wealthy were moving to Edinburgh’s New Town due to overcrowding around the Old Town. Doctor Alexander Barbour and his sister bought the buildings in the close and set about a renovation of them with Edinburgh Social Union. Most of the buildings were altered to create healthier living quarters, but by 1960, it had to go through another series of alterations and restoration carried out by the City of Edinburgh. At this time, some of the stairways, balconies and walls were removed and rebuilt.

Thankfully the original character was not lost and we are able to step back 400 years in time and still imagine it all.About pets:No pets allowed.About children:Children allowed: ages 0-17.About smoking:Smoking is not permitted.About events:No events allowed.

My recent hotel stay was a bit of a mixed experience. While the hotel was clean and well-equipped, there were several issues that detracted from my overall satisfaction. Before arriving, I had communicated with the hotel via email and was told that they could be reached via WhatsApp. However, upon arrival, I was unable to get a response from the hotel on WhatsApp. Additionally, there was no reception area, and check-in had to be done over the phone, which required multiple long-distance phone calls and extra fees. The day before check-in, I received a last-minute email from the hotel requesting a deposit, but they did not provide any information on how to make the payment. Not all of the staff were willing to provide assistance, but the last person I spoke to was patient and helpful, which allowed me to check in smoothly. One major safety concern was that there was a step outside the bathroom, but the floor was not marked, making it easy to trip and fall. Another hazard was the transparent coffee table in the living room, which caused several stumbling incidents that could have led to injuries. Overall, while the hotel was clean and well-maintained, the issues with communication, extra fees, and safety hazards detracted from my experience.

The hotel is well located, clean and hygienic. Suitable for couples or a family of three, but there are no slippers, shower gel, toothbrush and other items in the apartment, you need to bring your own. The apartment is self-service check-in, which is booked through a third party by Ctrip, except for the address and confirmation slip without any other check-in information. There is no password when I arrive at the store, and I don’t know the room number. You can only call the apartment yourself for help.

This hotel is nestled halfway up the mountain, offering a very quiet environment. The rooms are neat and clean, and it seems each room has a different color scheme. Upon check-in, I was upgraded to a sea-view room, and the balcony and courtyard faced the Macau Tower directly. The only issue is that there's only one bus that goes directly to the hotel, and it doesn't automatically stop at the hotel's station; you have to press the bell. It seems like other stops don't require this, so maybe I'm just out of touch.

This hotel boasts an excellent location with convenient transport links, including a bus stop right outside, and many popular attractions within walking distance. During our stay, the front desk staff were incredibly warm and efficient, quickly resolving any minor issues. The staff in departments such as the pool and housekeeping were also very friendly. However, the restaurant staff's attitude felt a bit stiff, a stark contrast to the warmth of other departments, and we hope this can be improved in the future. Overall, it's a highly recommended hotel offering both a great location and excellent service!

Honestly, this stay, probably due to the Chinese New Year approaching and increased crowds, wasn't quite as good as my last visit in terms of service. However, the Thai restaurant and the fitness center still maintained their excellent service standards and quality. On that note, I highly recommend the Thai restaurant's lunch special: 388 for two people, which is incredibly good value for money. You get to try all their signature dishes. I remember paying over 800 for dinner with a friend last time, so this deal is fantastic! My recurring issue, though, is the bathroom. The shower hose was moldy, the soap dish was moldy, and there was hair on the towel (a long hair, and I have short hair, by the way). Also, the hotel recently changed their toiletries. The body lotion is now the same tiny one found at the Grand Coloane Resort (part of the Artyzen Group). While the shower gel and other items are an upgrade, could the body lotion please be improved? Finally, a small personal wish: last time, after mentioning it was a repeat stay, I received complimentary welcome fruit, but not this time, haha. It would be nice to have little surprises upon check-in! To sum up: It was a decent stay, with attentive service. The hardware is a bit outdated, but the aesthetics are top-notch. It's rare to find a hotel with such unique style and design amidst the glitzy Macau, haha.

The hotel is conveniently located, with a variety of dining and entertainment options right downstairs, offering a one-stop solution for food, drinks, and fun, which saved us a lot of hassle during our trip. The hotel staff were attentive and thoughtful, with excellent service, making us feel very comfortable. The room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel even thoughtfully prepared a small tent, a footstool, and children's toiletries for the little ones, showing great attention to detail. The room was cleaned spotlessly every day, and the minibar had a wide selection of snacks that were promptly refilled daily, always meeting the children's little needs. During our stay, one day my child caught a cold and had to rest in the room. Ordering room service by scanning a QR code was incredibly convenient; the food was delivered quickly and tasted great, solving a big problem for us. Buying breakfast vouchers for the hotel's buffet directly through Ctrip was also very convenient. There was a wide variety of dishes, and they tasted good, even saving us from needing lunch. What the kids loved most was the hotel's play area: there's a fantastic Fun Park on the third floor, with discounted entry after 4 PM, where the children had an absolute blast. On the first floor, they could spend a long time playing with the soft gold bricks inside the vintage car, so happy they didn't want to leave. Overall, during our stay, both the elderly and the children were quite satisfied with the service, hygiene, parent-child facilities, dining, and convenience of travel.

I'd heard so much about this place, and I finally got to see and experience it for myself this time. Even though it's been built for a while, the interior is luxurious and very well-maintained, which doesn't detract from the experience at all. The service attitude and facilities are particularly excellent, with great management and well-assigned staff roles. It's incredibly convenient to travel between major hotels like The Londoner and The Venetian, as well as various famous shops. Guests staying here also get unlimited access to the 7th-floor observation deck of the Eiffel Tower. Transportation is also well-organized and very convenient. You can catch a car service from the basement, taxis from outside the lobby on the first floor, and various public buses are available right outside. The hotel's own restaurant serves delicious food. All in all, staying here is extremely convenient.

Even though it's an older hotel, the room was spacious and clean. Check-in and check-out at the front desk went smoothly. I had requested a non-smoking, quiet room when booking, and the hotel had it reserved for me. The family ahead of me, however, ran into trouble because they hadn't noted their preference beforehand and were assigned a smoking room. So, if you have specific requests, make sure to mention them in advance. Honestly though, family rooms really shouldn't be smoking rooms. The breakfast selection was quite limited, and it's not worth paying 100 RMB for it if it's not included in your stay. You're better off grabbing something from Cafe de Coral, a bakery, or a convenience store downstairs.

This was my first time staying at the Rocks Hotel in Macau, and I had a great experience! It's luxurious and comfortable with a beautiful environment, and the service is excellent! It's quite close to the Science Center but far from the Ruins of St. Paul's. Delivery services in Macau aren't very convenient; ordering takeout can take 60-80 minutes, and ride-sharing isn't easy when traveling with elderly or young family members. Everything else was satisfactory. It would be even more convenient if the Fisherman's Wharf, located downstairs from the hotel, were open. I'll definitely choose the Rocks Hotel again next time I visit Macau! 👍👍

As a stickler for details, I was very satisfied! The toiletries in the room were of excellent quality, the water pressure in the bathroom was strong, and the hot water came on quickly. The service was really good; all the staff we encountered were polite and professional. The room definitely showed its age. After showering on the first night, the bathroom floor was wet, and I thought my child hadn't been careful. On the second night, I used a disposable bathtub liner for a bath and then realized the bathtub drain was broken. A repairman came in the middle of the night and said it was a situation that required a room change for repairs – quite an unlucky draw. The new room was much further from the main elevator, and I could still smell smoke near the entrance. But there was nothing else we could do.

On a business trip to Macau, I spent a lot of time choosing a hotel and I'm so glad I finally settled on the Grand Lapa Hotel due to its convenient transportation. The hotel boasts an impressive architectural style and an excellent location with plenty of amenities nearby. The abundant breakfast was particularly satisfying. The staff were very helpful and always willing to assist. One day, my room card wouldn't open the door, and it turned out the room lock's battery had died. First, a bellboy accompanied me upstairs to check, and then after about a ten-minute wait, two technicians arrived to fix it, which they did in just a few minutes – very efficient. The bellboy was also very quick and efficient in helping me call a taxi and with my luggage. I brought my own bedding as I was worried about mosquito bites in Macau, but the hotel's bedding was actually very clean. It has the advantages of an older hotel (excellent location) while mostly avoiding the drawbacks (outdated facilities). Although the style is from the 80s or 90s, the carpets and bathroom facilities don't show their age. Great value for money!

Our Greater Bay Area trip was fantastic, and the Venetian truly exceeded expectations. The moment we stepped in, we were struck by its grandeur and opulent decor. The front desk staff were incredibly welcoming and even upgraded us to a scenic view room because it was our child's birthday, and they surprised us with a birthday cake! It's conveniently located right across from The Londoner and The Parisian, and Wynn Palace is just a short walk further. You can easily get to these places by walking through the hotel's internal walkways. Since we had a child with us, we couldn't use the ground floor connections, but the third floor provides easy access to all areas, with clear signage to guide you – none of that confusing maze some people mention. There are also plenty of dining options on the third floor. If you're up for a bit more walking, you can also stroll to Taipa Village (Rua do Cunha) in about ten minutes for more food choices.

Booked this place online based on a friend's recommendation, and honestly, it's great value for money. There are tons of good restaurants nearby, and it's really close to Grand Lisboa, MGM, and Wynn. We saw the Wynn's Tree of Prosperity, checked out the exhibition at MGM, and even enjoyed some free milk tea. We also tried the geoduck hotpot at Sun Cheong City. The only downside is the hotel's air conditioning – it's freezing! The whole place feels like a giant freezer. It was just too cold. I have no idea why they keep it so arctic.

Hotels in Macau are generally not cheap, but the Beverly Plaza offers incredible value for money. Its location is outstanding – right across from the Grand Lisboa, a 10-minute walk to Wynn to see the Tree of Prosperity, and just a 15-minute walk to the Ruins of St. Paul's. It's incredibly convenient. And most importantly!!! The bathroom has a separate shower and toilet!!! The bathtub is also separate! This is so crucial!!! It completely aligns with my preferences! I've found the bathroom layouts in many Macau hotels to be quite illogical, but the Beverly Plaza's bathroom gets a perfect score from me!!! From now on, I'm sticking with Beverly Plaza!

Took my child on a 5-day, 4-night trip to Hong Kong and Macau during the winter break, and the Crowne Plaza Macau was hands down the best hotel experience. Definitely a full five stars! 👍🏻 As a classic five-star hotel, the interior decor is meticulously chosen, standing the test of time and still looking new. There wasn't a single strange smell in the room, and the bathroom design was thoughtfully detailed. A big thank you to Ms. Zoey for her considerate arrangements, allowing us to enjoy a super five-star luxury sea-view room in Macau (almost the entire room had floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, but I took the photos at night with the curtains drawn 😂). The next morning, when we went to the Ruins of St. Paul's, and in the evening when we headed to the port to return to Hong Kong, Ms. Sarah Li and Mr. Alex Lin promptly helped us call taxis, making our trip much smoother. Their meticulous and thoughtful service made us feel truly at home. Looking forward to our next trip to Macau and staying at the Crowne Plaza again! ❤️
