The ancient name of the South Tianmen Gate is Tianmenguan. Because the ancient Taishan represents the heaven, the top of Mount Taishan is the location of the heavens. There are four heavens in the east, west, south and north. This gate is south, so it is called "Nantian Gate", and it is also the main entrance of the heavens, which leads directly to the temple of the Jade Emperor, on the top of the nine heavens (one said to be 36 heavens). In many myths and legends, the gods who guard the Nantian Gate have many names, such as the growth of the king, Wang Lingguan, Ma Zhao Wenguan four marshal, Zhang Tianshi, Xuantian god Wei general (the jade emperor himself sealed) and so on.
