The Robe obelisk was built in 1852 to navigate into Guichen Bay and store rocket lifesaving equipment. The stone obelisk is 12 meters high and easily visible 20 kilometers away. In 1862, after the captain complained that the white obelisk at the time was difficult to distinguish from the white sandy hills of Long Beach, it was repainted as an alternate strip of red and white.
