Bali hotels sit on very different ground: a surf beach on the south coast, a temple town in the hills, and a strip of restaurants between them. The six below cover two hotels in each of the three areas most first trips weigh up, with average rates from US$45 to US$506 a night. Every hotel links to its own page, and all rates are the average price shown there.
The area decides more than the hotel does. Kuta puts you on the sand with the airport a short drive away, Ubud puts you among temples and rice terraces, and Seminyak puts restaurants and shops within walking distance of the beach.
Area | Best for | Average rates |
|---|---|---|
Kuta (including Tuban) | Surf, beach days, the first or last night near the airport | US$45 to US$68 |
Ubud | Temples, rice terraces, a walkable town centre | US$227 to US$506 |
Seminyak | Restaurants, shopping, sunset on the beach | US$104 to US$106 |
Kuta and Seminyak share the same west coast road, with Legian in between, so a move between them is a short taxi ride. Ubud is inland and reached by road, which makes it a separate stay rather than a day trip from the coast.
Kuta covers two kinds of stay: a beach holiday with a surfboard under your arm, and one night at either end of the trip when the flight matters most. The beach runs along Jalan Pantai Kuta, with surf schools, Beachwalk, Waterbom Bali and late-night warungs in the blocks behind it, and the airport terminal is a short drive east. That is why so many trips start or finish here.

Kutabex is the one when the beach is the point of the trip, and the rate leaves room for surf lessons and dinners out. Sovereign trades the sand for a walk to the terminal and adds a pool the children can use, which makes it the better bookend for a late landing or an early flight.
Ubud has two hotel geographies. The town centre around Jl. Monkey Forest and Ubud Palace is walkable, with restaurants and temples on the doorstep. North of town, towards Payangan and Tegallalang, the resorts sit in the valleys and every outing needs a car.

KajaNe Mua suits a stay where you leave the car keys in the room and walk to dinner, and it costs less than half the resort rate. Padma is the resort stay: pools, a kids' club and enough on site that the rice terrace 14.9 km away is the main reason to leave.
Seminyak holds most of Bali's restaurants, boutiques and sunset bars, strung along Jalan Kayu Aya, the lane everyone calls Eat Street, and the sand at Double Six. The two halves of the neighbourhood sit about a kilometre apart, so where you book decides whether the evening starts on the beach or at a table, and the sunset bars fill in the hour before dinner.

Lloyd's Inn is the beach pick, small enough that the pool and the sand are both a few steps away. Ramada Encore is the family pick: the lagoon pool, kids' club and 24-hour room service matter more than the distance to the water, and dinner is a short walk up Eat Street.
Sorted by average rate, the six fall into three bands, and each band holds two hotels in different areas. The bands cut across the map, so the budget alone will not pick your base.
Band | Hotels | What the band buys |
|---|---|---|
Under US$100 | Kutabex Beachfront Hotel; Sovereign Bali Hotel | A beachfront three star with a rooftop pool in Kuta, or a four star with a children's pool 1.6 km from the airport |
US$100 to US$200 | Lloyd's Inn Bali; Ramada Encore by Wyndham Seminyak Bali | A four star in Seminyak, 300 m from the beach or 630 m from Eat Street |
Above US$200 | KajaNe Mua at Ubud Bali; Padma Resort Ubud | A five star you can walk out of in central Ubud, or a five star resort with a kids' club in Payangan |
Inside a band, the difference is what comes with the room: a rooftop pool and a shopping centre at the door at Kutabex, a children's pool at Sovereign, a spa and bistro at Lloyd's Inn, a kids' club at Ramada Encore. The Ubud pair splits the same way, with walkability at the lower rate and resort facilities at the higher one.
Four things decide how smooth a stay feels, and none of them is the star rating.
