Chiang Mai Hotels: Where to Stay Inside the Walls, at the Night Bazaar or by Nimman

Chiang Mai is small enough to cross in an evening and varied enough that the base still decides how the trip feels. The old city puts temples and the walking streets on your doorstep, the Night Bazaar Area keeps food and shopping going after dark, and Huay Kaew faces Nimman's cafes and the road up to Doi Suthep. This guide covers six hotels, two in each area, each linked to its own page, with average rates from US$36 to US$205 a night.

Chiang Mai Hotels by Area: Which Base Fits Your Trip

Pick the base before the room. The three areas are close enough to swap for an evening: Huay Kaew is about 1.7 km from the old city, and the Night Bazaar streets start a few hundred metres outside the moat. What changes is the walk you take at 7pm.

Area

Best for

Average rates

Huay Kaew

Nimman's cafes and malls, Chiang Mai University, the road up to Doi Suthep

US$36 to US$65

Night Bazaar Area

Evening market stalls, Anusarn food, shopping, a walk to Tha Phae Gate

US$43 to US$140

Chiang Mai Ancient City

Temples inside the moat, walking streets, the widest spread of rates

US$59 to US$205

Inside the moat you are between temples. At the Night Bazaar you are between stalls. On Huay Kaew you are between coffee shops, with the mountain at the end of the road. All three work on foot.

Chiang Mai Hotels in Huay Kaew: Best for Nimman Cafes and Mountain Views

Huay Kaew Road runs west from the northwest corner of the moat to Chiang Mai University, and the road to Doi Suthep climbs from there. Nimmanhaemin sits just south of it, a district of design cafes, craft shops and street art built around two malls, Maya and One Nimman. Evenings there are dinner, bars and shopping in that order, and the flat streets make it easy on foot.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep on the mountain above Huay Kaew Road, near Chiang Mai hotels in Nimman
  • Holiday Garden Hotel & Resort: Three star on Huay Kaew Road, with a free outdoor pool that has a view, a spa, a restaurant and bar with room service, a buffet breakfast from 06:00 to 10:00 that costs THB 350 and is free for children 6 and under, a garden, laundry and free private parking with valet. Average rate about US$65.
  • B2 Green Boutique & Budget Hotel: Two star on Sermsuk Road in Chang Phueak, with a restaurant, free parking, free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour front desk and luggage storage. Average rate about US$36.

Maya is 630 m from Holiday Garden and 1.3 km from B2 Green, so the cheaper room costs a fifteen minute walk to the mall. Holiday Garden is the one for a pool afternoon and a slow breakfast, with the mountain view from the terrace. B2 Green is the cheapest bed in this guide, with a room, parking and Wi-Fi, and the Nimman cafés a fifteen minute walk away.

Chiang Mai Hotels in the Night Bazaar Area: Best for Markets and Late Evenings

The Night Bazaar Area runs east of the moat along Chang Khlan Road, where the stalls open every evening and stay busy past midnight. Tha Phae Gate is a short walk west, so a temple morning and a market evening can share one base. Anusarn Market and the Kalare Night Bazaar are the food and stage end, and Waroros Market, the morning one, sits between the bazaar and the river.

Night market stalls lit along Chang Khlan Road, the heart of the Night Bazaar Area in Chiang Mai
  • Movenpick Suriwongse Hotel Chiang Mai: Four star on Chang Khlan Road, steps from the market, with a free outdoor pool that has a view and a pool bar, a free gym, a spa, five restaurants, two cafes and a lobby bar, room service, a buffet breakfast, airport pick-up and drop-off for a surcharge, and free self parking. Average rate about US$140.
  • Thapae Place Hotel: Three star on Tha Pae Road in Chang Moi, with 30 rooms, an outdoor pool, a restaurant, a garden, Thai massage, free parking and a 24-hour front desk. Average rate about US$43.

They are US$97 apart. Thapae Place is the small one: 30 rooms, a pool, Wat Buppharam 110 m away and Kalare Night Bazaar 620 m further east. Movenpick is the full service one, and it arranges a paid airport pick-up. On a late landing that arrangement is worth more than the room does.

Chiang Mai Hotels in the Ancient City: Best for Temples and Walking

Inside the moat everything is a walk. Wat Chiang Man, Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Jetlin sit a few minutes apart in a grid of lanes, with Tha Phae Gate on the east side and Chiang Mai Gate at the south end. Sunday Walking Street closes Ratchadamnoen Road inside the walls, and the cafés, bookshops and guesthouses run along the sois between the temples. Rates inside spread wider than in the other two areas, from a plain three star to a heritage four star.

The old city moat and brick wall at night, a short walk from Chiang Mai hotels inside the walls
  • Kodchasri Thani Heritage Collections: Four star on Ratchapakhinai Road in Phra Sing, with a free outdoor pool and a children's pool, a gym, the Chaang Imm buffet restaurant and a cafe, a wine cellar, a garden, free private parking and laundry. Average rate about US$205.
  • SK House 2: Three star on Prapokklao Road in Si Phum, at the north end of the old city, with an outdoor pool, a gym, a restaurant and bar with room service, bicycle rental, a convenience store, laundry and free luggage storage. Breakfast is ordered a la carte. Average rate about US$59.

Kodchasri costs three and a half times SK House 2 and buys a heritage building, a children's pool and the shorter walk to Tha Phae Gate. SK House 2 has Wat Chiang Man 70 m away and rents bicycles, which turns the 3.8 km run to Nimman into a ride. Kodchasri keeps its desk until 23:00, so a late arrival needs a call ahead.

Chiang Mai Hotels by Price Range

Sorted by average rate, the six fall into three bands of two, and the bands cut across areas.

Band

Hotels

What the band buys

Under US$50

B2 Green Boutique & Budget Hotel; Thapae Place Hotel

A two star near Nimman, or a 30 room three star with a pool a walk from Tha Phae Gate

US$50 to US$100

SK House 2; Holiday Garden Hotel & Resort

A pool and a gym inside the moat, or a pool, a spa and a buffet breakfast on Huay Kaew Road

Above US$100

Movenpick Suriwongse Hotel Chiang Mai; Kodchasri Thani Heritage Collections

Five restaurants and a paid airport transfer, or a heritage four star with a children's pool

What each band includes matters more than the band itself. Under US$50 the room is the whole product. In the middle band a pool and breakfast appear. Above US$100 you are paying for restaurants, a spa and a transfer.

Chiang Mai Hotels: Transport, Food and Booking Tips

Four things change a stay more than the star count does.

  • Red songthaews cover the moat and Nimman. Shared songthaews run the main roads, flagged down in the street with the destination agreed before you get in and paid on the way out, while Grab and Bolt cover the rides you want fixed in advance. The areas stay interchangeable because they are close: Huay Kaew is about 1.7 km from the old city, and Tha Phae Gate is a five minute walk from the Night Bazaar streets.
  • Sunday closes Ratchadamnoen, Saturday closes Wualai. The Sunday Walking Street fills the road inside the moat from late afternoon, and the Saturday one runs along Wualai south of Chiang Mai Gate; both turn the lanes into a food and craft market for the evening. The Night Bazaar on Chang Khlan Road runs every night, which covers the other five evenings.
  • The mountain road starts at Huay Kaew. The road up to Doi Suthep and Wat Phra That leaves the northwest corner of the moat, past Chiang Mai University and the zoo, and a songthaew or a hired car handles the hairpins better than a scooter does. Mornings are the clearer half of the day for the view over the city.
  • Cool season books first, burning season empties out. November to February is the cool, clear stretch, and the weeks around Yi Peng and Loi Krathong fill the old city first. March and April bring smoke from field burning and the hottest afternoons, when rates soften. Inside the moat the courtyard houses hold few rooms, so book those before the flights.

Amazing
AAnonymous UserOverall, the property has a pleasant concept, and the surrounding greenery creates a very nice jungle‑resort, exotic atmosphere. The natural environment is well‑designed and enjoyable but my 2 nights stay came with several issues that future guests may want to be aware of. Considering the price, there are much better options in the area that offer a more comfortable experience and better facilities. 1. Privacy & Layout The architectural layout offers very limited privacy. From the balcony, neighboring rooms are directly visible, which made it difficult to use the outdoor space comfortably. 2. Cleanliness & Hygiene Some areas of the room were not thoroughly cleaned. The built‑in storage under the bed had visible dust and dirt, making it unsuitable for storing clean clothes. In the shower area, the pebble‑style floor creates many hard‑to‑clean corners. Before I even used the shower, I noticed hair and even ***** hair trapped between the stones. During showering, water drained extremely slowly, causing the floor to flood and submerge above my feet under standing water. This design makes the area prone to bacteria buildup and was uncomfortable to use, especially for female guests during sensitive times. 3. Bathroom Fixtures The handheld bidet spray had extremely strong pressure and ice‑cold water, which made it uncomfortable to use—especially for women during sensitive days. 4. Safety & Property Layout The property’s terrain is quite complex, with multiple staircases and uneven levels. At night, many areas are poorly lit, which can be unsafe if guests are not watching their step. Some decorative reflective pieces hanging from trees also create a rather unsettling atmosphere after dark. The corridor near my room remained unlit at night, making the area feel dim and uncomfortable. Additionally, during rainy weather, several outdoor areas accumulated water, making certain paths slippery and less safe to walk through. 5. Room FacilitiesvThe room does not have a wardrobe or proper clothing hangers. The only hanging option is a decorative tree‑branch style rack, which is suitable for small items but not for clothing. As a result, clothes can only be placed on the balcony, where humidity and rain make it difficult to keep them dry.vThere is also no bedside lamp or reading light, which makes the room not work‑friendly.vAdditionally, there is no luggage rack or storage space, so suitcases must be kept on the floor throughout the stay. 6. Condition of FacilitiesvMany parts of the property appear worn down and in need of maintenance. In the dining area, several corners and edges show visible deterioration, and I noticed areas with water leakage. Overall, the facilities feel quite aged and could benefit from repairs and updates. 7. Service & CommunicationvThere is no phone in the room, and front desk service ends around 10 PM. Even after I added the property’s contact information, my door was still knocked on at night despite having a “Do Not Disturb” sign displayed. Complimentary water was provided, but only when requested; it was not proactively replenished. 8. Deposit & BreakfastvThe property requires a cash deposit upon arrival, which feels unusual considering the age and condition of the facilities. Breakfast was provided, but the quality was noticeably lower compared to other homestays in the area. 9. Additional Safety ConcernsvI found a sharp, hard plastic piece in a dish I ordered. I pulled it out from my mouth, and I almost swallowed it. The meal was remade, but the original dish was not waived.vThe bathroom door lock also malfunctioned once. There were also quite a few jumping spiders in the room due to the environment, likely because regular insect control is not performed. I requested insect spray from the front desk, and they did respond quickly and helped resolve it.

GGuest UserI stayed here for three nights. The pool was lovely, and while some rooms had great layouts, others were just okay, but all were very clean. The front desk staff were incredibly welcoming; they greeted me warmly every time I passed by, and their English was excellent, making communication very smooth. The hotel is located near Chiang Mai University, with a large night market right next door. The food there was delicious, and I ended up eating dinner at the market every evening. The laundry service in front of the hotel was very affordable and efficient.

GGuest UserThis was the hotel my kids were most excited about. When I booked, I saw that children weren't allowed on the ground floor with pool access, so I had to book two rooms. I was worried they'd make a big deal about the kids not being allowed on the first floor at check-in, but they didn't at all, and they even welcomed the little ones! The kids had a blast in the pool, totally worth the price. The afternoon tea desserts, honestly, weren't really anything edible. I thought there would be mini cakes or something, but it was just self-serve dried pumpkin and dried banana 😂. However, the hotel's location is excellent, very close to the old town with plenty of food and shopping nearby. The only thing I couldn't quite get used to was the breakfast at this vegetarian hotel – no eggs, surprisingly, haha. Oh, and by the way, the packaged snacks next to the bottled water aren't complimentary; they charged for them at checkout!

GGuest UserI came to Chiang Mai for Songkran and chose this hotel based on a friend's recommendation. I was very impressed with the location and the excellent service from the staff. They paid attention to every detail. The manager and owner constantly checked in on me and offered assistance, making me feel like a true relative. The hotel room was clean, and the amenities provided were up to 5-star hotel standards. The bed was soft and comfortable, and I slept soundly. I purchased breakfast separately at the restaurant for 350 baht. It was a set menu with many options to choose from, all incredibly delicious, and you could order more. There are also very cute and friendly cats here. This is one of the hotels I highly recommend staying at in Chiang Mai. I will definitely be back.

GGuest UserAnts. The room is big, the place is cute and aesthetically pleasing. They also offer you coffee and toasts the morning BUT they should do something for the holes or the space under the door that make many many insects enter the room, especially big flying ants and it’s frustrating

GGuest UserThis is hands down one of the best stays away from home I have had, 11 out of 10 to put it plainly. I consider myself a seasoned traveller, and have stayed at most of the name brand 5 star chains (4 seasons, Regent, Ritz Carlton etc) and many boutique hotels (small luxury hotels of the world etc) across in Asia, Africa and the West. By any standard of hospitality, Villa Mahabirom stands out, where you feel comfortable in luxury and well cared for by the staff. The property is very private, even if it is only 15 minutes away from the international airport, a private oasis hidden from sight - you wouldn't know it exists just passing it by. It is small with 15 villas, so even at maximum capacity I can imagine it remains serene and peaceful. While we were there, there were a few guests and it did feel as if the entire property belonged to us, which isn't bad at all! The occasional plane passing overhead is not Each villa is unique, and as I read, assembled from century-old collections of old Thai houses from across the country, painstakingly reassembled. If you are looking for that sense of culture and heritage, look no further. There are other standouts in Chaing Mai such as Rachamankha (which I have visited), but Villa Mahabirom doesn't play second fiddle to them in my opinion. The high ceilings of our room (#101) gives you a huge sense of space, and the large bathroom is marble tiled, making for a great contrast between the ancient and the modern. Sheets, pillows, bathrobes, all the basics are super clean and fresh, nothing less than what you would expect at a major outfit like the Four Seasons. One of the most creative aspects of this hotel experience is the ability to hangout at around 5 curated public spaces across the property, each with a unique set of chairs/couches, Thai furniture and sculptures. Great for early morning Yoga, reading a book in the afternoon, or hanging out at night with a drink. It's not a big property.  The pool might be considered on the small side, but again, with only a limited number of villas, it's rarely crowded, and we were able to enjoy a private pool experience on each of the 3 days we were there. Above all, the service here, the care and attention is important to mention. My other half had to stay behind at the hotel with a different flight time on our last day, and we extended her late checkout to 2PM, which was further extended to 8PM proactively by the staff later in the day - they probably realised that the room didn't have an incoming guest, but regardless, I've never seen that type of consideration anywhere else. Service during dining is impeccable, you always feel someone is waiting on you, to take your order or keep your glass full, little details that used to be standard but are slipping away more and more. The only thing that I wish could be improved is that the front desk does close at 10PM, leaving one a bit worried about late night requests or issues. To wrap up, this isn't a property with grand views, or built on the top of a mountain, or have 300 rooms with 2 bars and 6 Michelin star restaurants - and for me that's perfectly fine because it stands tall on it's own terms in the boxing ring.

JJonKMWe really loved this hotel. The room was large, clean, and beautifully designed. The pool was also great. It is also in a great location right night to one of the main night markets, and nearby everything else. But the best thing were the friendly and helpful staff. Especially Eve who helped us find some nice local places, and made great reccomendations on what to see and do which really enhanced our trip. Thank you so much!
