These verdant botanical gardens are home to more than 6000 plant species, and provide a fine intro to the rich flora of Rio and Brazil. Planted back in the early 1800s, the gardens have scenic paths that wind through towering royal palms, past Amazonian flora, gurgling fountains, an orchid conservatory and a scenic lake. There are also abundant bird species — more than 100 at last count. Come during the week, and you'll have the gardens largely to yourself; while weekends bring local families and a festive air.
