The Orthodox Church of St. George of Madaba, built in the 5th century and rebuilt in 1896, has this mosaic-insulated map of the world's oldest existing Middle East on the ground. The map, which was spliced with 2.3 million colored stone pieces, was completed in about 560 AD and clearly records the location and topographic characteristics of ancient Palestinian and Egyptian cities, such as Jerusalem and Alexandria, in the 6th century, as well as rivers and seas.
