It's located in a corner of Metsä, a large park with lots of greenery. Entry to areas outside of Moominvalley Park is free. Inside Moominvalley Park, you can see Moomin's house, watch Moomin short films, enjoy an adventure with Moominpappa, Hemulen's amusement park (with athletic facilities), and indoor play areas, making it a place where children can have fun all day long. The merchandise is incredibly cute, so adults will enjoy it too. The restaurants inside are a bit pricey, but the cuteness makes them worth the trip.

It was a day trip from Iwate, but I was able to relax and enjoy myself. I want to go again. You should definitely try the strawberry shaved ice on the way to Moominvalley Park! It's real strawberry shaved ice, not just syrup! 🍧

Easy bus ride from Platform 1 to Moomin valley(Metsu village) from the Hanno Station. The place is overall fun and enjoyable with short Moomin stories events every hour or so.

Buying tickets through the app is cheaper than buying them at the park entrance. There are many activities to do, which kids will love, and they can get closer to nature.

Getting to Moominvalley Park from Tokyo: Train and Shuttle Bus Guide

Train plus shuttle bus
Moominvalley Park transportation tips: Take the train plus a shuttle bus—leaving from central Tokyo is the most convenient

Image source: Moominvalley Park official website

Moomin Valley Park runs three free shuttle routes.

  • One is a direct bus from Kawagoe Station, but you need to book it in advance.
  • The other two pick up from Komagawa Station and Higashi-Hanno Station. For current timetables, check the official bus schedule.

From central Tokyo, the simplest route is to take the train from Ikebukuro Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line, then hop on one of the free shuttles at any of those stations. If you're also planning a day trip to Kawagoe, you can take the direct bus from Kawagoe Station and skip an extra transfer, it saves both time and money.

Driving and Parking Information

Driving from central Tokyo? It takes roughly 1.5 hours. Weekday parking costs 1,000 yen, or free if you park under two hours. Weekends and holidays are a flat 1,500 yen for the day, not a huge cost for families with strollers and luggage.

If you prefer not to drive and hate multiple transfers, try the direct buses from Shinjuku or Ikebukuro. One ride, no changes, and much easier when travelling with kids or older adults.

Hemulen's Playground is set in a hilly area. There are slides and climbing structures grouped by difficulty, designed mainly for kids aged 6 to 12. Energetic little ones will have plenty of space to burn off steam.

If you're after something more thrilling, there's a paid zipline that stretches about 400 metres across Lake Miyazawa. It costs ¥3,000 (approx. US$20.00). Just keep in mind that height, weight, and age restrictions apply. Check the registration process and weekly operating days in advance to avoid disappointment.

By the lake, there's a bathhouse that Moominpappa built. When the evening light hits the water, it makes a beautiful photo spot. Walking slowly around the lake takes about 20 to 30 minutes. When the kids are tired from running around, it's a nice place to sit down, relax, and take a few photos to remember the day.

The Moominvalley Cafeteria serves Nordic‑style food. You'll find salads, meatball sets, and kids' meals on the menu. Portions are a good size for one person.

If you're tired and just want a place to sit, the Library Café is a great option. It has shelves full of Moomin books, and you can even borrow board games. It's a nice spot to relax with coffee and baked treats.

There are also a few small stands around the park selling light snacks and sweets. Seating is limited, and mealtimes get busy quickly, especially with kids. Go early or eat at off‑peak times for a more comfortable experience.

Moomin Valley Park Side-Trip Recommendation Kawagoe Ichibangai Street

Moominvalley Park Side-Trip Recommendation: Kawagoe Ichibangai

It's easy to combine Moomin Valley Park with a side trip to Kawagoe. The old streets are wonderfully photogenic, with the Toki no Kane bell tower and rows of traditional kurazukuri warehouses that have a Taisho‑era charm. Kita‑in Temple and Hikawa Shrine are both within walking distance too. Half a day is just right for wandering around.

Kawagoe retains many hidden houses with clear bricks and tiles from the Edo period; it feels like going back to the 1930s; walking into the clock; many people are worshiping; they worship together even if they don’t know what they are praying for; I met two couples wearing kimonos here; one of them It seems like I’m getting married; I’m going to take wedding photos; it feels really good

The main landmark of Kawagoe Ichibangai is the clock tower "Toki no Kane". This is the symbol of Kawagoe and is rung four times a day. Another spot is Kashiya Yokocho. There are 20 shops in the narrow alley.

The street is quite quaint and many people will be wearing kimonos to take pictures nearby. There are all kinds of snacks along the way. The only drawback is that there are too many people

The landmark clock on Ichiban Street is a must-see Built since the Edo period Although it has been burned by fire But after the reconstruction, it is still magnificent There were also many Japanese young people wearing kimonos taking photos with it. Don't miss the snacks sold on the street. Although it is a tourist area But they all have a certain level

Kawagoe City is not far from Tokyo, and is only five stops away from Omiya Station. It has the famous Ichiban Street, where you can enjoy the street scenes and beautiful buildings of the Edo period!

Hanno City Central Park

Hanno City Central Park

Hanno City has plenty of forest trails and hot springs too. If you're not in a hurry, you could wander around downtown Hanno after Moomin Valley Park and grab a bowl of local ramen or udon before heading back. It makes the day feel much more complete.
