Tokyo to Fukuoka (2025): Shinkansen, Highway Bus, Flight, and Car

Author's Profile Picture
Tokyo to Fukuoka

For most travelers, it is a two-horse race between the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen and non-stop flights from Tokyo to Fukuoka. The fastest Shinkansen services (called Nozomi) take about 4 hours and 45 minutes to 5 hours from Tokyo Station to Hakata Station. Flights from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Fukuoka Airport take about 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours in the air, and door-to-door is often 2 and a half to 3 and a half hours because Fukuoka Airport is only one short subway ride from Hakata Station. Long-distance buses are the cheapest but take around fourteen hours. Driving is possible but long and tolled.

Tokyo to Fukuoka: Shinkansen (Bullet Train)

Tokyo to Fukuoka: Shinkansen

Route and Train Types

You will ride the Tōkaidō Shinkansen (operated by Central Japan Railway Company) and continue onto the San’yō Shinkansen (operated by West Japan Railway Company) to Hakata Station in Fukuoka. The main service types are Nozomi (fastest), Hikari (semi-fast), and Kodama (all-stop).

Typical journey time (Tokyo → Hakata)

  • Nozomi: about 4 hours and 52 minutes or faster (shortest timetabled runs are around 4 hours and 45 minutes).
  • Hikari/Kodama combinations: longer because they make more stops and/or require a change.

Tickets and Luggages

There are a few channels in which you could use to book train tickets:

  • Trip.com (as long as you haven't picked up the train ticket, you can cancel it between 8:00-20:00 GMT)
  • Central Japan Railway Company's official Shinkansen Travel Site
  • SmartEX website or smartphone application

***cancelation for your reservation can be done up to four minutes before departure (before you enter the ticket gates).

As for luggages, there is the oversized luggage rule that you need to follow. If the sum of the length, width, and height of your suitcase is 160cm to 250cm, you must reserve an oversized baggage area seat. For items over the limit, it is not permitted on the shinkansen. The seat by itself costs the same as a regular reserved seat, remember to choose the special seat category when booking.

Rail pass note
The nationwide Japan Rail Pass includes Hikari and Kodama on this corridor. If you want the faster Nozomi or Mizuho, check the current “special ticket” policy for pass holders, which allows use with an additional paid ticket. Check out official JR Passes on Trip.com with step by step how to use and more.

Why choose the Shinkansen?
It is fast and frequent with departures all day plus smooth city-center travel (Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station to Hakata Station), and minimal weather disruption compared with flights.

Airlines and Time

All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, Skymark Airlines, StarFlyer, Jetstar Japan, and Peach Aviation offer many non-stop flights between Tokyo and Fukuoka. Non-stop flight time is about 1 hour and 55 minutes to 2 hours (varies by schedule).

Airport to city

  • From Fukuoka Airport to Hakata Station, the Fukuoka City Subway "Kuko Line" takes about 5 to 6 minutes and typically costs about 260 Japanese yen. Trains run every few minutes from early morning to shortly after midnight.

Because Fukuoka Airport is indoor, time for a flight can be 2 and half to 3 hours, depending on your Tokyo departure airport, check-in time, security queues, and baggage claim.

Why choose a flight?
You want the shortest total travel time from western Tokyo areas to central Fukuoka, you find a sharp sale fare, or you are already connecting at Haneda or Narita.

Very convenient; after purchasing your ticket, simply have the staff scan it at the entrance for successful registration. The sea lion and slug show is fantastic, and the aquarium has many marine creatures to see – definitely worth a visit!

The signature red bridge is very beautiful. It is said to be a place to worship the god of learning, so it seems that many locals visit to pay their respects to the god for their children's studies. There is not much to do in Fukuoka itself, so I recommend visiting. Business/Operating Hours: 6:30 AM ~ 7:00 PM

It's really beautiful during cherry blossom season! During cherry blossom season, the park is bustling with people and hosts a cherry blossom festival. There are also food trucks, so it's great for eating while walking around. Maizuru Park is large, so it's best to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Tokyo to Fukuoka: Drive a Rental Car

Tokyo to Fukuoka: by car

Route and Time

A typical route uses the Tomei / Shin-Tomei / Sanyo / Kyushu expressways. Expect roughly 14 to 16 hours behind the wheel depending on traffic and rest stops, plus distance-based tolls (Japan’s expressway system is tolled and can be expensive on very long routes). Use the official expressway toll search to estimate costs for your exact interchanges.

Why choose to drive?
You specifically want a road trip with side trips en route; otherwise, the Shinkansen or a flight is more time-efficient.

Tokyo to Fukuoka FAQs

  • How long does the Shinkansen take from Tokyo to Fukuoka?

The fastest services take about four hours forty-five minutes to around five hours fifteen minutes, depending on the train.
  • Is flying faster than the Shinkansen if you're traveling from Tokyo to Fukuoka?

  • How do I get from Fukuoka Airport to central Fukuoka?

Take the Fukuoka City Subway Kuko Line from the airport to Hakata Station in about five to six minutes (about 260 Japanese yen) or continue to Tenjin in about eleven minutes.
  • How long is the overnight bus from Tokyo to Fukuoka?

Plan on about fourteen hours depending on route and traffic; fares vary by seat type and date.
