The Detroit Art Institute was founded in 1885. The museum was originally located on Jefferson Avenue, but because of its rapid expansion, it moved to a larger place in 1927, Woodward Avenue. The collection of art institutions is among the top six in the United States, preserving the diversity of human cultures from ancient times to the present.
