Travelling by train gives you time to explore a garden, linger over lunch and wander the old streets before returning to Shanghai for the evening. How Long Does the Shanghai to Suzhou Train Take, and What Does It Cost?

Most high-speed journeys between Shanghai and Suzhou take around half an hour, although the exact duration depends on stations and stops. Some journeys can be as fast as 25 minutes, others might be closer to 50 minutes; it all depends on which station you’re departing from. 

There are several train stations in both cities to consider when booking your ticket. From Shanghai, Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai West, and Shanghai Hongqiao all have high-speed trains to Suzhou throughout the day. 

Shanghai South also has services to Suzhou, but in general these are slower routes that make many stops, so not convenient for a day trip. 

Allow For The Whole Journey

The train ride won’t be the only part of your journey to Suzhou for the day. You’ll also need to budget in getting to the train station, passing through security, and getting from Suzhou train station to the attractions.

Here’s a rough guide of how long the overall journey might take getting from Shanghai to Suzhou using the train. 

Which Shanghai and Suzhou Stations Should You Choose?

It all depends on where you’re staying in Shanghai, and in Suzhou, the main Suzhou Railway Station is usually your best bet if you’re looking to visit the old city and gardens. 

Here’s when to consider each of the three train stations in Shanghai:

Shanghai Railway Station or Shanghai West?

When staying in Shanghai, these will be your two best options to consider for your day trip to Suzhou. Both have high-speed departures to Suzhou Station, so it comes down to whichever one is more convenient to where you’re staying in Shanghai. 

Suzhou Railway Station or Suzhou North?

Suzhou Railway Station and Suzhou North are separate stations. If the main aim of your visit to Suzhou is to see the old-city, Suzhou Railway Station is your best choice.

Suzhou North is obviously farther north in the city, located in Xiangcheng district. But it can work if available train timings suit your plans better. Overall, there are four arrival stations worth comparing in Suzhou:

For the Humble Administrator’s Garden, my default would be Suzhou Railway Station followed by getting the metro to the entrance. If you arrive at Suzhou North, Metro Line 2 connects it with Suzhou Railway Station. 

How Do You Get From Suzhou Train Stations To The Main Attractions?

The metro is a practical choice for most people arriving in Suzhou; it’s fast and efficient, and connected to the big sights you’re here to see. If you’re bringing luggage for a night, a taxi might be a better choice. 

From Suzhou Railway Station, use the following routes: 

Arriving elsewhere? From Suzhou North, take Line 2 towards the old city, changing at Pinghelu for the garden and museum area. From Suzhou Industrial Park, Line 3 reaches Dongfangzhimen for Jinji Lake’s western shore. Suzhou New District has a direct Line 6 connection to Tiger Hill and Zhuozhengyuan Subo. 

How Can Foreigners Book Shanghai to Suzhou Train Tickets?

Foreigners can book their Shanghai to Suzhou train tickets either through Trip.com, or via the official 12306 website and app, which will involve setting up an account and verifying your identity. 

• Trip.com: Through Trip.com you can easily compare trains from different stations, and receive and support in English. 
• Railway 12306: This has the benefit of booking directly through the railway’s official platform, although you’ll need to complete your identity verification before being able to reserve any tickets. 

A third option for those who would rather wait until they’re in China is to simply go to a staffed railway ticket window. You’ll need to show your passport, and then pick a date, time, and station that you’d like. It’s useful if you need assistance booking, although leaving it this late might mean your preferred train has no more seats. 

When booking China train tickets, it’s essential to enter each passenger’s full name and passport number accurately, following the right name order on each platform. 

How Far Ahead Can You Book?

The usual advance-sale window is 15 days, including the travel day and purchase day. When booking through Trip.com, you can book much farther ahead, but it will remain a request until the official tickets go on sale. 

What Do You Need to Bring to the Station?

You’ll need to bring your original passport that you used to book your ticket with. Whether you booked via Trip.com or 12306, travel checks at the train stations mean that you’ll need to be identified. Note that a screenshot or just the printed itinerary isn’t enough, you’ll need your actual passport, so keep it handy. 

For a first journey, I suggest reaching the railway station about 60 minutes before departure. This gives you a nice buffer for your arrival, some extra time if you need some help, or there are large queues. 

A checklist to run through before you leave your hotel: 

1. Check the full departure station name and travel date.
2. Save the train number, departure time, coach, seat and booking reference offline.
3. Bring the same physical passport you used to book.
4. Check your route to the railway departure entrance.

Should You Book the Return Train in Advance?

For a fixed day trip, I do recommend booking the return when you book the outward journey. You’ll then have a clear end point for your day of sightseeing, and it avoids missing out on the best journey back to Shanghai due to the train being full. 

Of course, you’ll want to book a train later in the day, ensuring you have enough time for all of the things you’d like to do in Suzhou. Then, give yourself a buffer for the arrival and passing through security. 

Booking a return is also essential if you want to stay in Suzhou into the evening, perhaps having dinner by a canal. There are later trains, but it might also make sense to stay overnight so you don’t have to rush. 

A Relaxed Suzhou Day Trip Itinerary from Shanghai

For a first visit, I’d recommend a hit-list of the highlights, which means building your day around the Humble Administrator’s Garden and Pingjiang Road. This gives you two very different sides of old Suzhou without having to cross the city repeatedly. 

The Humble Administrator’s Garden was built at the beginning of the 16th century, and brings together ponds, pavilions and carefully framed views. You’ll be able to spend an hour or two here wandering through the park, taking photos and enjoying the beauty of it all. 

Then, after a lunch break, you’ll have the afternoon to explore the Pingjiang Road Historic District. This road follows a canal through the historic neighborhood, near the garden and museum area. There are laneways on either side, where you can discover tea houses and more canals.

DIY Train Day Trip vs Guided Tour vs Overnight Stay

A DIY train trip suits travelers who enjoy setting their own pace, although a guided tour is also a good option if you’re looking for some local explanations of Suzhou. Staying overnight gives you room for a leisurely dinner in the city, and perhaps an evening wander around the canals and more sightseeing the next day before heading back to Shanghai.
