Who can travel to Malaysia, what are the Malaysia Travel Restrictions, and is the border open?

From April 1st, 2022 foreign visitors will once again be able to travel to Malaysia without applying for the ‘MyTravelPass’ (an entry or exit permit) which was previously required to enter Malaysia. Now that the country’s borders are reopened, visitors will be required to download and activate the MySejahtera app for the duration of their time in Malaysia. This is a bold move by the Malaysian tourist board who are following in the footsteps of Thailand and Vietnam to get tourists flowing into Malaysian attractions again. This all means that anyone who was planning to visit Malaysia before the Covid 19 pandemic and was disappointed, can now fulfill their dreams with an almost unrestricted visit to one of the most interesting and beautiful tourist destinations on the planet. Both vaccinated and unvaccinated tourists are now free to visit Malaysia although there will be different rules and restrictions depending on your vaccination status.

What are the latest Malaysia Travel Restrictions - both for fully-vaccinated travelers and others?

Malaysian premier Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri announced that the following restrictions imposed during the pandemic will be removed for foreign travelers who want to travel to Malaysia from April 1st. Nevertheless, foreign visitors entering Malaysia who are either not vaccinated or not fully vaccinated against Covid-19 must quarantine themselves for five days before engaging in their tour of Malaysia.
Malaysia travel restrictions on business working hours will be removed, consequently permitting business owners to observe the business hours specified in their business licenses.
Removal of the 50% capacity limit for events that include large crowds.
The removal of the size limit imposed on the amount of personnel permitted in a workplace based on the employees’ vaccination status.
The relaxation of the social distancing rules at mosques and places of worship. These places are, however, still subject to rules issued by the state religious authorities and the National Unity Ministry.
One thing to remember is that nightclubs are yet to reopen in Malaysia. If you are looking to dance the night away in a crowded hot sweaty nightclub it’s not quite the time just yet. The Malaysian government has ruled that nightclubs offer too much of a risk regarding the spread of the virus and have wisely chosen to suspend their opening until there’s an increased safety factor involved. Don’t worry, there is plenty of other stuff to do at nighttime in Malaysia, check out special deals on Trip.com.

With the border open, other relaxed ‘travel to Malaysia’ travel restrictions include:
The allowing of interstate travel irrespective of an individual’s vaccination status, and exemption from having to use the MySejahtera app in open areas that are not crowded and where there are no public assemblies. However, the MySJTrace function must be used in enclosed premises and indoor events that involve a great number of visitors.

What should travelers prepare to travel to Malaysia bearing in mind any Malaysia travel restrictions?

If you are fully vaccinated before you travel to Malaysia you will not have to quarantine yourself but will have to take a Covid-19 RT-PCR test two days before departure. You are also required to take a qualified RTK Antigen test within 24 hours of arriving either at a health facility or the airport.
Overseas visitors who, tempted by the border open, want to travel to Malaysia should also get immunized for Hepatitis A and Typhoid and also check that their routine vaccinations are up to date before the visit. For visitors spending more time in the country, precautionary shots are also recommended for Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies.
In conclusion, it is far better to get yourself properly vaccinated for Covid 19 before you travel to Malaysia. The alternative is to spend 5 days in a hotel wasting your time before you can get out and explore this extraordinary country. It is also a good idea to make sure that you have the other vaccination shots mentioned in the section above. The last thing you want to do on your dream holiday is spend time (and money) visiting the hospital because of illnesses and diseases Hepatitis A and Typhoid.

What procedure should I follow before I travel to Malaysia?

Most travelers from western countries can travel to Malaysia for 14 to 90 days without getting a visa, this does depend on nationality. Travelers from other nations will probably need a tourist visa which involved a journey to the local Malaysian embassy. However, visitors from China and India (and certain other countries) can apply for their tourism visas online and travel to Malaysia by gaining an eVisa before entering.
Malaysia’s borders have been closed since March 2020 and it is expected that with the border open the removal of many Malaysia travel restrictions on 1st April 2022 will help improve the country's economy, especially the tourism industry, which has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
