Chengdu's three main hotel bases sit close together in the centre, so the choice is less about distance and more about what you want outside the door: a shopping street, a metro interchange or an old lane. Chengdu Hotels by Area: Which Base Fits Your Trip

Pick the base before the room type. Chunxi Road is the shopping core, with Chengdu IFS, Taikoo Li and the pedestrian street inside a kilometre. Tianfu Square is where metro lines 1 and 2 cross, which makes it the quickest base for crossing the city and for the museum. The lanes around Kuanzhai Alley and People's Park are the low-rise end, where the point is walking out into teahouse streets in the evening.

The three bases are close enough that a taxi between them is short, and the real difference is the street you step onto at night. Chunxi Road stays busy late, Tianfu Square empties after the museums close, and the lanes on the west side go quiet early.

Chengdu Hotels in Chunxi Road: Best for Shopping and First Stays

This is the base for a first visit. The district runs from the Chengdu IFS towers and Taikoo Li to the Chunxi Road pedestrian street, with the metro station at its edge and a dense line of malls, snack shops and tea houses along the way. Breakfast, shopping and dinner all sit inside a kilometre, and the streets stay busy well after dark, which is why a first trip rarely needs a taxi here.

Mercure is the full-hotel option: buffet breakfast from 07:00, a gym, a playground and a walk of under a kilometre to the shops. The hostel is the budget option, and its family rooms of 30 to 35 sq m with private bathrooms suit a small group that would rather spend the difference on food.

Chengdu Hotels around Tianfu Square: Best for Metro Connections

Tianfu Square is the crossing point for metro lines 1 and 2, and the address most of the city's business travel uses. The square is the ceremonial centre of Chengdu, with the Chengdu Museum on its edge, wide avenues on every side and the interchange underneath. The streets empty once the museums close, so this base suits a trip that moves around the city by day and turns in early.

Rezen Dong is the one for a short city trip: 180 m to a two-line interchange, breakfast downstairs, and a gym for the evening. Rose Hotel is the apartment-style choice for a longer stay, where the kitchen, the washer and the projector matter more than a lobby. The deposit and the paid pick-up are worth adding to the rate before you compare the two.

Chengdu Hotels near Kuanzhai Alley: Best for Old Lanes and Parks

The western base is the oldest-looking part of the centre. People's Park, Chengdu Museum and Kuanzhai Alley sit within a kilometre of each other, and the lanes between them hold the teahouses, the snack stalls and the low-rise courtyard buildings that survived the rebuild. Evenings are quiet by design, which suits a trip that ends with a pot of tea rather than a bar, and People's Park metro station keeps the rest of the city a few stops away.

Kew Green is the easier base for a first walk: the station is 300 m away, the rooftop terrace and restaurant keep dinner in the building, and People's Park is the nearest landmark. The Hidden House is the newer and smaller of the two, with 45 rooms and childcare, which suits a family or a couple who want the lanes at the end of the street.

Chengdu Hotels by Price Range

Sorted by average rate, the six fall into three bands, and the first two bands draw on more than one area.

Price alone will not pick your base. Under US$70 you choose between a hostel in the shopping district and an apartment-style room by Tianfu Square. Above US$105 the extra money goes to a newer building and family services, not to a better position.

Chengdu Hotels: Metro, Food and Booking Tips

Four things decide more about a stay than the star rating does.

• Change lines at Tianfu Square. Lines 1 and 2 cross under the square, and the metro is how most of the city is crossed: the station is 180 m from Rezen Dong and 380 m from Rose Hotel, with Chunxi Road one stop north and the museums at the surface. Taisheng South Road, where Mercure sits, is about 740 m from the nearest entrance, some ten minutes on foot.
• Drink tea in People's Park before dinner in Kuanzhai. The teahouse terraces in People's Park are the afternoon ritual, and the lanes around Kuanzhai Alley are 950 m from The Hidden House, with Chengdu Museum 460 m from the same door and People's Park station 300 m from Kew Green. The shopping district covers the other end of the day, with Chengdu IFS 720 m from Mercure and the pedestrian street 850 m.
• Book before Golden Week, not just before the weekend. Rates move with public holidays as much as with weekends, and a holiday night in the centre costs far more than a weekday one. Put the same two nights into each hotel before deciding, and book a family room early: the hostel's three and four bed rooms go first.
• Land at Shuangliu with the last leg planned. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is 19.24 km from The Hidden House, about 24 minutes by car, and Chengdunan railway station 6.37 km, so a late landing is worth arranging in advance.
