Taipei's hotel map is small enough to learn in one metro ride. Three areas hold most of the rooms visitors book: the station district for rail and airport connections, Ximending for shopping and late nights, and the blocks around Taipei Arena for concerts and work. Two hotels in each area follow, with average rates from US$160 to US$386 a night.
The base decides how much of the day goes to transit. The station district puts the railway, the high speed rail and the metro in one building, with the airport line underneath. Ximending is where the shops and the street food stay open late. The northern blocks are quieter after dark and sit closest to the offices and the arena.
Area | Best for | Average rates |
|---|---|---|
Taipei Railway Station Area | First-timers, rail and airport arrivals, one-night stopovers | US$207 to US$234 |
Ximending Commercial Area | Nightlife, shopping, street food | US$237 to US$316 |
Taipei Arena | Concerts, business trips, the northern districts | US$160 to US$386 |
The three are a few metro stops apart, so the base changes the mood of a trip more than the commute. Rates below are the average shown on each hotel's own page, and they move with the date.
This is the one base where a car is unnecessary from the moment you land. Taiwan Railways, the high speed rail, the metro and the airport line all meet at Taipei Main Station, with the Q Square mall and the old city gates a few minutes away on foot. That makes the district work for a first visit and for a single night between trains, and its streets hold the budget rooms, the business towers and the bus terminals for the airport coaches.

On the rates we saw, the five star was the cheaper of the two. MAYERINN is a small property in a commercial building and earns its place with the laundry room and the 24-hour desk, which suit a stopover. Caesar Park adds the gym, the sauna, a restaurant and airport transfers, and if the gap between the two stays under US$30 on your dates, it is the more useful booking.
Ximending is the dense, bright quarter west of the station. Ximen Station carries the Bannan Line and the Songshan-Xindian Line, walkability in the district is rated excellent, and the streets hold fashion shops, cinemas, karaoke and street food such as oyster omelette and bubble milk tea. The Red House marks the middle of the grid, and the lanes around it stay busy past midnight.

Papa Whale is the one to take if the plan is to walk out of the door into the shopping streets. Caesar Metro trades that for a pool, free parking and the older Wanhua side, where Longshan Temple and Huaxi Street Night Market are within a kilometre. Caesar Metro keeps extra beds to certain room types, so a family of four should book a category that already sleeps four.
The northern blocks around Taipei Arena hold the offices, the arena and a run of hotels on Section 3 of Nanjing East Road. Nanjing Fuxing station puts both metro lines at the corner, Liaoning Street Night Market is a few minutes away, and the streets are quieter after dark than Ximending's. It is also where the cheapest and the most expensive rooms in this guide sit.
The pair frames the whole range. FX is the cheapest of the six and the practical choice for a work trip that needs parking and a desk, while Metropolitan is the most expensive and the one for a concert night when the walk back to the room matters. Liaoning Street Night Market is 280 m from Metropolitan and 290 m from FX, which gives both a dinner option that does not need a taxi.
Sorted by the average rate on each page, the six fall into three bands. Each band mixes areas, so price alone will not choose your base.
Band | Hotels | What the band buys |
|---|---|---|
Under US$200 | FX Hotel (Taipei Nanjing East Road) | A four star in Zhongshan with free parking, a gym and Nanjing Fuxing station 140 m away |
US$200 to US$280 | Caesar Park Hotel Taipei; MAYERINN; Hotel Papa Whale | A five star tower at Taipei Main, a three star stopover room beside it, or a four star inside the Ximending grid |
Above US$280 | Caesar Metro Taipei; Hotel Metropolitan Premier Taipei | An outdoor pool and free parking in Wanhua, or an indoor pool, a sauna and a Japanese restaurant in Zhongshan |
Inside a band the difference is what comes with the room: a sauna and airport transfers at Caesar Park, a laundry room and a 24-hour desk at MAYERINN, a pool at either of the two most expensive hotels. The jump from the middle band to the top one is the largest on the list, and it buys facilities more than a better address.
Four things change a stay more than the star rating does.
