The hotel's service was absolutely perfect. Every single staff member greeted us with a smile and was incredibly warm and attentive. During our stay, they were always quick to meet our needs, whether it was housekeeping or restaurant reservations – everything was handled very efficiently. One time, we wanted to celebrate a birthday in our room, and the hotel staff went above and beyond by specially preparing a birthday cake and candles for us, making us feel right at home.

This is my second time staying at this hotel, mainly because of its incredibly convenient location. The room's location was excellent, and I really appreciate the hotel upgrading my room. This time, I was upgraded to an executive floor, and the butler would check in with us periodically, responding to all our needs – it was very nice. In late December, it was quite cold outside, so the heated pool was a huge plus; the kids could play in the evening, and I didn't have to worry about the water temperature. Although there wasn't a bed rail, the bed was large enough for three people without disturbing each other. I'll definitely prioritize this hotel for my next visit and recommend it to anyone visiting Chongqing.

The apartment was very clean, and my kids loved it. Hygiene: Clean, tidied up daily. Environment: Right next to Raffles City, great for shopping. Service: The front desk service was excellent. No matter how late it was, they'd deliver our takeout right to the door. There's also a basketball court and a gym on the 2nd floor, perfect for entertaining the kids.

Kempinski has been open for over a decade now. Upon checking in, I noticed that all the furnishings and facilities in the room, while perhaps excellent in their time, are now showing their age. The Sony TV, though a bit small, still has good picture quality. However, many of the room's features suffer from a lack of maintenance. Numerous buttons were slow to respond; for example, with the automatic curtains, I had to press the button many times before it would finally work. The TV remote also required multiple presses to get a reaction. The bedside lamp switch would turn the light on for a moment, then it would immediately flicker off. The mini-bar was extremely basic, offering only Nescafé instant coffee and simple tea bags, with just two bottles of mineral water. What was most bizarre was finding the mini-fridge locked, despite there being a price list for drinks in the mini-bar. After calling housekeeping, the fridge was unlocked when we returned, but it was completely empty. What are we supposed to consume then? What's the point of having a price list? The bed and pillows were both too soft; as soon as you sat on the bed, you would sink into the middle. The overall service awareness at this hotel doesn't live up to a five-star standard. Throughout my stay, aside from a cleaning lady on my floor who proactively greeted me, everyone else provided silent service, never speaking unless explicitly asked. There was supposed to be a complimentary 500ml fresh beer, but the front desk didn't mention it at check-in. When I called from my room to inquire, the person on the phone wasn't sure how to handle it at the front desk and didn't follow up on the issue. Breakfast variety was just average. I had hoped the European bread would be good, but there was only baguette and toast, and other dishes were also quite ordinary. The only thing that left a strong impression was the freshly cooked rice noodles, which had a very well-seasoned broth, and you could add pickled vegetables yourself. There was also no salt or pepper on the dining tables; you had to ask a server for them.

I don't know why this hotel never comes up when I try to book accommodations on Trip.com. It might be because it’s located in the middle of a city with hundreds of hotels. Finding a hotel in Chongqing can be challenging, as you need to consider your preferences, like whether you want a hotel with a mountain view, city view, or river view. However, if you want to be at the center of it all, near Jiefangbei Street and Bayi Street, this hotel is a must. I discovered this hotel after booking and canceling my reservations multiple times. It is affordable, centrally located, and the rooms are spacious. If I have the chance to return to Chongqing, I will definitely go back to this hotel. It may not be brand new, but being in the heart of the city is what really matters. I am truly satisfied with my experience.

It also has a swimming pool that is good for kids to play in and the view was amazing. The place was clean and peaceful. The staff was very friendly and they even gave us the opportunity of a late check out for the little baby to have his afternoon nap.

Had a wonderful stay at the Hotel with its exceptional location making every destination within 30 minutes or less than 30 yuan per didi ride. Rooms were well designed with most modern amenities but excluded any cutlery or crockery to complement their kitchenette with full fridge. Loved the automated bidet as well as washing/dryer provided. The city views are brilliant as well though they don't have views of hongyadong. Amenities wise gym was under maintenance but was not informed earlier on this inconvenience. There's a convenience store downstairs as well as numerous eateries nearby and within jiefangbei walking distance. Breakfast had a good spread however the food was mostly cold as if the warmers were not working. There's a mandatory 500 yuan deposit which will be refunded upon check out. Hotel was kind enough to upgrade me to a higher floor room and provide me with a late check out at 2pm on a complimentary basis.

Overall a great place. Beautiful rooms of the highest quality in every regard. The best features are the hot spring pools in the rooms of course. The showers are also great( two in every shower room) Great quality TV with great sound. Good selection of movies( not the latest releases) but all free. Food at the hotell restaurants had good standard. The best we have experienced in China. But for double the price we would pay for the same quality Chinese food in Norway. Surprisingly! But keep clear of the pizza. It is actually just a frozen pizza type. Very small. We didn’t order any more western dishes after that, except for the Cesar’s salad. Which was good. The place is old now and a bit worn. But it’s still is very very beautiful and high quality. Where this hotell really shines is the services of the staff. Even if they don’t speak English and we don’t speak Chinese they are very patient. To a Norwegian it is almost too much. They carry your bags even when thy are too heavie and many for one person. They drive you you to and from your room if you have a villa. We got an upgrade from ordinary room with hot spring pool and double bed to a villa! Because we found 6 small worms in the shower room. I think this is pretty hard to avoid in such a sub tropical and humid environment. But we reported it to the staff and they immediately gave us an upgrade with a complementary big fruit basket. We were blown away by this huge upgrade. Only thing that was a bit negative and unexpected is the extra deposit fee which is quite high. I think this should have been more clearly informed in the hotell booking and hotell online page. We were a bit low on funds as Banyan tree was our last hotell stay in China before leaving and we were on a planned but tight budget. We solved it of course with our Mastercard but it caused a bit stress for us. And a second thing is that using Alipay instead of WeChat is more difficult at the hotell. ( not impossible)But without Chinese phone number you can’t use WeChat.

Things to Notice for Traveling in Chongqing

Chongqing airport guide

Weather and Clothing

Chongqing is known for its hot, humid summers and mild, foggy winters. Summers (June-August) can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C (95°F), so pack lightweight, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a hat. Winters (December-February) are cooler and foggy, especially near the Yangtze River, so bring a light jacket and check flight schedules, as fog can cause delays.

Spicy Food Warning

Chongqing is famous for its spicy Sichuan cuisine, particularly Chongqing hotpot and Xiaomian (spicy noodles). If you’re not accustomed to spicy food, start with milder dishes and always have water or milk on hand to soothe your palate. Many restaurants allow you to customize the spice level, so don’t hesitate to ask for "bù là" (not spicy) or "wēi là" (mildly spicy).

Transportation Tips

Chongqing’s hilly terrain and complex road systems can make navigation challenging. Use the metro system for efficient travel, as it covers most major attractions and is affordable. For short distances, ride-hailing apps like Didi Chuxing are convenient. Be prepared for traffic congestion, especially during rush hours (7-9 AM and 5-7 PM).

Language Barrier

While major tourist areas and hotels have English signage, many locals, especially in markets or smaller restaurants, may not speak English. Learn a few basic Mandarin phrases or use translation apps like Google Translate or Pleco to communicate. Having your destination written in Chinese can also help when taking taxis.

Cash and Mobile Payments

While credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger establishments, many smaller shops, street vendors, and taxis prefer cash or mobile payments like WeChat Pay or Alipay. Ensure you have some Chinese Yuan (CNY) on hand and set up a mobile payment app if possible.
