The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, founded in 1987, covers 3.07 square kilometers about 10 km north of downtown and houses more than 200 giant pandas and red pandas. The must-see list continues at Dujiangyan, a 2,000-year-old irrigation system, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, and Wuhou Shrine, and the city's relaxed tea-house culture and spicy food scene give it a distinctly unhurried pace.

Chunxi Road Commercial Area

Chunxi Road is Chengdu's liveliest shopping and dining district, with Taikoo Li and the Chunxi Theater close by. It is the base to pick if you want the city's retail, restaurants, and evening atmosphere within walking distance.

Tianfu Square / Chengdu Museum

This is the civic center of Chengdu, around Tianfu Square and the Chengdu Museum. Both hotels sit close to the metro and put Sichuan Grand Theater within a short walk.

Kuanzhai Alley & Chengdu University of TCM Area

Kuanzhai Alley and the surrounding old town serve up Chengdu's classic teahouse-and-street-food atmosphere, with Chengdu People's Park a short walk away.

When to Book Chengdu Hotels

• The best time to visit Chengdu is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November); June and December are not bad either.
• Autumn, roughly October to November, is arguably the best window for Chengdu, with cool temperatures and smaller crowds.
• Book Chengdu Panda Base tickets in advance on Trip.com to skip the lines, because on-site tickets are not guaranteed during peak seasons such as holidays and weekends.
• For flights to Chengdu, book at least 2 to 3 months ahead; the earlier you book, the better the price.

Transport

• Chengdu has two main airports, Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) and Tianfu International Airport (TFU). Shuangliu is about 16 to 18 km from the city center and the closer of the two; Tianfu is roughly 51 km out, and from there Metro Line 18 is the most recommended way downtown.
• From Tianfu Airport, Metro Line 18 reaches the city center in 40 to 50 minutes, while airport buses run 24 hours and take 60 to 90 minutes to Chunxi Road. From Shuangliu, Metro Line 10 takes 25 to 50 minutes, with a change to Line 3 at Taipingyuan station.
• A night bus runs from Tianfu Airport to Chunxi Road from 23:30 to 06:00 for ¥25 (about US$3.71), and a taxi typically costs ¥150 to 200 (about US$22 to 30), more at night.

Food

• Chengdu is the home of Sichuan cuisine (川菜), one of the most famous culinary styles in China, built on bold flavors from chili peppers and Sichuan peppercorns.
• Hotpot is the classic Chengdu dish, with meats, vegetables, and tofu simmered in a spicy broth at your table; Chuan Chuan Xiang serves the same idea on skewers.
• Jinli Street and Kuanzhai Alley are both great places for Chengdu street food, and a trip is incomplete without dan dan noodles and hot chili oil wontons at Chunyangguan.

Entry

• Until 31 December 2026, travelers can enter China visa free for stays of up to 30 days for tourism, business, family or friend visits, or transit.
• Under China's visa-free transit policy, you need a valid international travel document with at least three months' validity and must meet the entry requirements for a third country.
• If you carry more than ¥20,000 (about US$2,750) in Chinese yuan when you enter, declare it.

Weather

• Chengdu's climate is steamer-like, and Sichuan weather can change at any time, from sunny skies to torrential downpours.
• July and August are the hottest months, with average highs of 28 to 30°C (82 to 86°F); January is the coldest month, with average temperatures around 6°C (43°F).
• Spring is pleasantly mild with temperatures from 15 to 25°C, while summer is warm and humid at 25 to 33°C.
