Fukuoka Hotels: Where to Stay in Hakata, Tenjin & Nakasu

Fukuoka Hotels: Where to Stay in Hakata, Tenjin & Nakasu

About Fukuoka

Fukuoka sits on the northern shore of Kyushu, a city that balances ancient temples with the buzz of Canal City Hakata, its best-known shopping and entertainment complex. Kushida Shrine anchors the spiritual heart of the city, while Fukuoka Tower rises 234 meters above Hakata Bay, clad in 8,000 mirrors with a 360-degree observation deck. Ohori Park, modeled after Hangzhou's West Lake, brings a Japanese garden, walking paths, and the Fukuoka City Art Museum into the center of town, and the stone walls and gates of Fukuoka Castle Ruins still tell the story of the city's samurai past.

Where to Stay in Fukuoka

Hakata

Hakata is Fukuoka's transport and culinary nerve center, anchored by JR Hakata Station and famous for its namesake tonkotsu ramen. Staying here puts you steps from the bullet train and a short walk to Kushida Shrine.

When to Book Fukuoka Hotels

  • Book Fukuoka hotels early, especially for weekends and festival periods: prices climb fast as rooms fill during the Hakata Gion Yamakasa and other peak-demand windows.
  • January, June, and September are the cheapest months for Fukuoka hotel stays; Tuesday rates tend to run lower than other days of the week.
  • To lock in the best Fukuoka hotel deals, book at least one month ahead. Last-minute reservations usually cost more and leave fewer room choices.
  • Fukuoka hotels hit their lowest average rates in July at around $143 per night; November is the priciest month, averaging $238 per night.
  • For cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons in Fukuoka, aim to book 6 to 9 months ahead. During normal travel periods, 3 to 5 months is enough.
  • Weekend rates in Fukuoka jump noticeably, as do prices during cherry blossom season and the Christmas-to-New-Year holiday stretch.
  • Trip.com runs refreshed promotions each month; checking for seasonal sales and package deals on Fukuoka hotels before booking can trim the total.

Fukuoka Travel Essentials

Transport

  • Fukuoka Airport is 5 minutes by subway to Hakata Station, one of the most convenient airport-to-city connections in Japan.
  • Three subway lines (Kuko, Hakozaki, Nanakuma) and a wide bus network cover the city; subway fares run 200 to 260 yen per trip, and the Fukuoka Tourist City Pass costs 640 yen for a full day of unlimited travel.
  • IC cards like Suica, Pasmo, and Hayakaken work on buses, subways, and at many convenience stores throughout Fukuoka.

Food

  • Hakata ramen is Fukuoka's calling card: thin, straight noodles in a creamy tonkotsu broth made from long-simmered pork bones.
  • Yatai, the open-air food stalls lining the Naka River in Nakasu, serve ramen, oden, and grilled skewers and are a Fukuoka institution found nowhere else in Japan at this scale.
  • Mentaiko (spicy marinated pollock roe) is a Fukuoka specialty eaten with rice, pasta, or straight; motsunabe, a hearty offal hot pot with cabbage and garlic chives, is the local winter comfort dish.

Entry

  • US citizens do not need a tourist visa for stays in Japan up to 90 days.
  • As of 2026, most visa-exempt travelers need a valid passport and a completed Visit Japan Web registration before entry.
  • Cash and instruments worth 1,000,000 yen or more (approx $6,450 USD) must be declared on arrival and departure.

Weather

  • Fukuoka in March averages 15degC (59degF) during the day, with cherry blossoms in bloom and moderate rain; light layers work best.
  • Fukuoka in August is hot and humid, averaging 33degC high and 25degC low, with 180mm of rain; coastal breezes help, and summer festivals fill the calendar.
  • Fukuoka in December brings highs around 11degC (52degF) and lows near 4degC (39degF); dress in layers with a light jacket.

※ Prices and policies vary by season and are subject to change. Confirm with official sources before booking.

GGuest UserAugust 2026 After comparing several options, I chose this hotel considering factors like transportation and price, and it truly didn't disappoint! Facilities: Excellent and comprehensive. There's a microwave, vending machine for drinks, and an ice maker on the 6th floor, which is very convenient. Cleanliness: Spotless and well-maintained! Service: Patient and attentive. The check-in area on the 2nd floor thoughtfully provides essential toiletries, which was a great touch! Plus, the check-out process was super fast; I didn't have to wait in line at the self-service machine!

GGuest UserThe location is excellent, just across the road from Hakata Station. The room was a bit small, but the facilities were quite good. There was a free afternoon tea from around 3-5 PM with coffee, tea, and biscuits, a nice place to sit and relax. The lobby also had stamps for collectors, which was a thoughtful touch. There are several drugstores nearby with friendly prices, and a Daiso that's open until around 10 PM, perfect for emergency purchases like a luggage bag. Fukuoka really impressed me with its shopping options and competitive prices. The department stores at Hakata Station staying open until about 9 PM is quite rare and convenient. Restaurants are open even later, making it a very lively area. Hakata is also a great hub for connecting to many places in Kyushu. Next time, I'll definitely remember to get discount coupons with my passport before shopping at AMU Plaza. They work for both shopping and dining, which felt like a real bonus! The saleslady at AUX even reminded us to get them before paying, which made for a great shopping experience.

XXS YangStay I booked a semi‑private cabin (men only, non‑smoking) for three nights, averaging about S$28 per night. The cabin was compact yet cozy, offering more privacy than a capsule. The bed was clean and comfortable, with fresh linens provided daily. A secure locker was available for small luggage, while larger bags could be stored at the front desk. Guests were considerate, and the noise level was low enough for restful sleep. I especially liked the ventilation hole near the bed, which blew cool air directly across — it kept the cabin fresh and ensured I never felt hot while sleeping. Food The hotel itself does not serve meals, but there is an optional breakfast plan with St. Marc Café nearby. Otherwise, Tenjin’s dining scene is right outside — ramen shops, izakayas, and cafés are all within walking distance, making food choices easy and varied. Amenities Facilities are practical and well‑maintained. Showers were clean, with steady hot water and complimentary toiletries. Towels and indoor wear were provided, while toothbrushes, razors, slippers, and extra towels were available at a small fee. Wi‑Fi was reliable throughout the property. The shared lounge had desks, outlets, vending machines, a microwave, and even a manga library. Coin laundry machines were available, making longer stays convenient. Staff were polite and efficient. Atmosphere The semi‑private cabin design gave a homely feel compared to standard capsules. The interiors were tidy and modern, with thoughtful touches like privacy curtains, individual controls, and the cooling airflow from the ventilation system. Common areas were clean and functional, with a relaxed vibe in the lounge. Location Situated in central Tenjin, the property is right in Fukuoka’s shopping and entertainment hub. Transport connections are excellent: Tenjin South Station is just 2 minutes’ walk, Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station 4 minutes, Hakata Station 15 minutes by train, and Fukuoka Airport about 22 minutes. Shops, restaurants, and nightlife are all steps away. Overall Wellcabin Tenjin is affordable, clean, and practical for solo male travellers. The semi‑private cabins provide more comfort and privacy than capsules, with tidy facilities, reliable amenities, and even laundry options for convenience. Downsides are the men‑only restriction and the fact that some items like toothbrushes, slippers, and extra towels are not free. Overall, it’s a strong choice for budget‑minded travellers who want privacy, convenience, and a cool, comfortable sleep in the heart of Fukuoka.

GGuest UserGreat for solo travelers, and very affordable. It's right next to the original Ichiran Ramen and Don Quijote. The room and bedding were spotless. Although talking in the rooms is technically not allowed, some people still do, so it's a bit of a gamble. The second floor has a common area with internet access and hot water, which is super convenient. There's also an all-you-can-drink special at the first-floor bar, which is a nice touch. The only downside is that with dozens of beds in one room, noise is pretty much unavoidable, so it really depends on your priorities.

QQiaoleboThis time, I stayed on the 4th floor. As soon as I stepped out of the elevator, there was a strange, somewhat stinky smell, and the air purifier shown in the picture was running on full blast. When I opened the room door, a fishy smell hit me. Turning on the air conditioning on high helped alleviate it. I stayed for two nights, and on one occasion, I mistakenly went up to the 5th floor – there was no strange smell at all! I can't believe the hotel assigns rooms this way, it's unbelievable! The toilet paper holder next to the toilet, as pictured, is positioned very awkwardly and bumps into your legs. It's not at all like a Japanese hotel. I've been to Japan many times, from old five-star hotels to rural motels, and this hotel provided the worst experience. It's stinky, and the room facilities are bizarre. Even if it were cheaper, I wouldn't stay here a second time. The hotel's location is convenient; it's just a short walk from Hakata Station. Staying near Hakata Station is definitely very convenient. This is my second time in Fukuoka and my second time staying in the Hakata Station area. Coming from Tokyo on my westward journey, hotels near Hakata Station are much more expensive. This time, and the last time, the hotels I stayed at weren't even as clean as a motel in Oita's countryside, and the experience wasn't as comfortable as small inns that cost several times less. Nor did they offer the old-money five-star service of established five-star hotels. This is just right outside Hakata Station. Next time I come to Fukuoka, I definitely won't stay in the Hakata Station area.

AAnonymous UserGetting there: It's about a 10-minute walk from Tenjin subway station, which can be a bit of a hassle with luggage because Fukuoka's terrain isn't always flat, especially on a rainy day. However, Tenjin shopping district is right outside the subway station, with lots of fun things to do, and there's also a train station where you can catch a ride to Dazaifu! After you exit the hotel alley, one way leads to Tenjin shopping district and the other to Canal City Hakata. There's even a huge 24-hour gachapon store along the way. Plus, there are tons of restaurants and izakayas right next to the hotel, which is super convenient. Cost: !!! You have to pay a 200 yen accommodation tax per night upon check-in. I was a bit confused because I didn't have to pay this at hotels in Osaka or Kyoto. Lobby: They offer free mango juice and fruit tea, which are really good. It's very quiet, and there's a Korean staff member at the front desk you can converse with in Korean. They also provide various amenities, including makeup remover, toner, and lotion. Room: Very quiet and clean. Surroundings: There's a Lawson convenience store right around the corner that has a currency exchange machine. I recommend exchanging your money there before you leave, as Fukuoka has very few currency exchange machines, and even Hakata JR station doesn't have one. I would consider staying here again.
