Qiandao Lake, Hangzhou

Qiandao Lake, Hangzhou (Thousand Island Lake) is one of China’s most popular lake spots—and for good reason. It’s not a natural lake; workers built it in 1959 when they dammed the Xin’an River. Now, it has 1,078 small islands dotted across its waters, which is where it gets its name. Most people visit from Hangzhou (it’s only 2 hours away) for a day or two—you can cruise to islands, see ancient towns under the water, or just relax by the lake. It’s perfect if you want a break from city life.

First and third island (Longshan) are good, the second is quite commercial (we booked the tour between 09:00&09:50) and not too pretty sadly. Meifan Island is ok, view can be nice! Price is ok, not too expensive

Thousand Islands Lake is Tai Lam Chung Reservoir, the largest reservoir in the northwest New Territories. There are dozens of hills and islands and four dams in the reservoir, which is known as the Hong Kong version of "Thousand Islands Lake". In 2019, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department built a viewing platform near Section 10 of the MacLehose Trail, numbered M181, and renamed it "Thousand Islands Lake Qingjing Terrace" to facilitate visitors to get a glimpse of the entire Thousand Islands Lake.

Qiandao Lake (Thousand Island Lake) is a 5A-level scenic spot and “the most beautiful show water in the world.” Located near Hangzhou, in Chun’an County, Zhejiang, it’s an artificial lake formed by the Xin’an River Hydroelectric Power Station, with 1,078 islands (hence its name). • Clean water: The lake’s water is so clear you can drink it (locals even use it to cook fish!).
  • Two main areas: Most people stick to the Central Lake Area (easy to reach, with 4 main islands). The Southeast Lake Area is quieter, good if you want to avoid crowds.

2. Qiandao Lake - Underwater Ancient Cities (Lion City & He City)

These are the lake’s most interesting secret—two towns that sank in 1959 when the lake was built:

  • Lion City (Shi Cheng): The better-preserved one. It was a busy town for over 1,300 years before the water rose. You can’t walk inside, but you can take a glass-bottom boat (from the main terminal) to see its stone walls, arched gates, and even old doorframes. If you’re a certified diver, you can book a dive trip to get closer (you might see stone tablets or old bricks).
  • He City (He Cheng): Older than Lion City (built in 208 AD) but most of it was damaged before the lake formed—only parts of the city walls remain. It’s less popular than Lion City, so it’s quieter.

  • Cycle the lakeside greenway: Rent a bike (about $4–$6 a day) and ride the 150km path along the lake. Stop at viewpoints to take photos—autumn is the best time (cool weather, red leaves).
