Nara Food - Unakiku Nara Main Store

Unagiku sits beside Kikusuiro, Nara’s century-old famed establishment, as an Edo-style annex brimming with retro charm. Because Kikusuitei’s eel rice bowl became wildly popular, they opened this dedicated unagi spot. Here, live eel is gently steamed, then charcoal-grilled and brushed with a secret sauce. It’s served with fragrant Koshihikari rice, plus pickles and a clear broth—so appetizing you’ll find yourself going back for bite after bite!

Whether simmered into sukiyaki or served over rice as a beef bowl, the meat practically melts in your mouth.

If you’re craving wagyu shabu-shabu, the second location is right across from the original shop—it just opened in July 2025 and is already a hit!

Paired with Nara Prefecture’s Hinohikari rice, every bite is packed with flavor. Here, you can enjoy both shirayaki (eel grilled without sauce) and kabayaki (eel glazed with a sweet soy sauce) at very reasonable prices—truly a great deal with excellent value!

Nara Food - Mentoan

Mentouan is a must-visit udon noodle shop in Nara, conveniently located just a 10-minute stroll from Kintetsu Nara Station. Their absolute showstopper is the 'Fukubukuro Udon' – a culinary delight where a giant, savory-sweet fried tofu skin (aburaage) lovingly embraces a generous portion of perfectly chewy udon noodles. It's truly a 'lucky bag' of flavor! The delightful balance of sweet and savory from the tofu skin, combined with the satisfying texture of the noodles, creates an unforgettable taste experience. And trust us, the portions are incredibly hearty, so you'll walk away feeling wonderfully full and happy!

Wagyu Sukiyaki KITSUNE

"KITSUNE" is a sister restaurant from "sio," a restaurant in Yoyogi-Uehara, Tokyo. It brings a fresh way to enjoy Japan’s beloved sukiyaki. Although the sukiyaki is cooked in the classic style, they offer three signature sauces that make every bite more layered and satisfying. The ingredients are sourced from Nara, including the region’s own Yamato beef and locally produced rice milk, which makes the sukiyaki broth even sweeter and more delicious.

Nakatanido’s mugwort mochi is a must-try sweet you simply can’t miss when visiting Nara! Located right on Nara’s bustling shopping street, it’s easy to spot—just look for the steady line at the door. Hang around and you might catch their famous high-speed mochi-pounding show, which always draws a crowd of curious onlookers. Each piece is wonderfully soft and tender. The outer layer is made with Japan-grown mugwort, giving every bite a delicate herbal aroma, while the filling is silky red bean paste that’s sweet without being cloying.

Nara Food #9: Great Buddha Pudding

Nara Food - Great Buddha Pudding

Nara Food - Great Buddha Pudding

Beyond its mugwort mochi, Daibutsu Pudding is a star in its own right! This cozy shop sits right next to Kintetsu Nara Station and serves up a tempting lineup of flavors—Yamato tea, no-bake cheesecake, coffee, and more. The runaway best-seller is the classic custard. Puddings come in two sizes—large and small—and the jars are printed with an adorable Great Buddha design you’ll want to snap a photo of. The pudding itself tastes a bit like panna cotta: silky-smooth and delicate without being overly sweet. One important tip: Daibutsu Pudding can’t be taken on flights back to Taiwan!

Nara Food - Three Leaf Ramen

Mitsuba Ramen is near Tomio Station in Nara City. Though it’s not in the downtown area, plenty of travelers still come just for a taste! Mitsuba Ramen once earned the No. 7 ranking in Japan. You can choose between tonkotsu (pork bone) and shoyu (soy sauce) broths—the soup is rich and silky, and the noodles are delightfully springy. Every bowl comes with a soft-boiled egg, and when the yolk spills out and melds into the broth, it becomes even more aromatic and flavorful!

This hotel is super conveniently located right next to JR Nara Station, making transportation a breeze. There's a 7-Eleven and a large supermarket next to JR Nara Station, which is really handy. You can also catch a bus right outside the hotel to Nara Park. The hotel offers many optional services, showing great thoughtfulness. The onsen (hot spring) experience was generally good. They even provided sleep aids like different pillows and sleep supplements. My room was quite spacious for one person, though the facilities were relatively simple. The keyless entry with a password lock on the door was great as it meant I didn't need to carry a room card. The hairdryer was a Refa, and it was fantastic! The best part was definitely the free happy hour at the restaurant in the evenings. There was a wide variety of drinks available, and many guests brought food from the convenience store to enjoy with their drinks.

Read this review carefully because it provides a very specific insight. Good things first. Very clean and amazing planning of the place. I loved the garden. Also, nice to have a well water spot with coffee and tea. You can leave your luggage at the counter and go walking till checking-in. I got 110 small dorm. Bedding was great. Each bed had a rest area for work. Bad things. I was given bed #1, which is near the door. At around 6AM two tenants from upstairs started going in and out non-stop. Hence, I had 0 sleep after 6 AM. Check-out is at 10:00, meaning I lost at least 2-3 hours of sleep. The door is very loud and the wall shook next to my bed. I don’t even mention that sound was also loud upstairs. The owners could oil the door parts and, for example, plan upstairs area better to reduce the noise. So, if you plan to come late and have good sleep this place and its dormitories is unlikely for you.

Great location a couple of minutes walk from the Kintetsu line station and tons of restaurants. Check-in was a fun and unusual experience! The room was spotlessly clean, the King bed was huge and the room was super quiet. All the amenities you could need: shrink wrapping clothes, microwave, laundry machines…and best of all free luggage storage. Had we realised this we would have saved the 2700yen we spent on lockers at the station. Breakfast had a great selection. We loved it so much we booked the Kyoto branch for our next nights stay, where we have just checked in to today.

The hotel is within walking distance of Kintetsu Yamato-Saidaiji Station and is also in a great location, just 3-4 minutes from Heijo Ruins Park. It's also perfectly located for soaking in hot springs, which are extremely rare in Nara City. The downside is that the facilities are old, and there are issues with facility management and maintenance, such as room and bathroom locks not locking in some places. Also, the hand washing areas in the rooms are not flush with the rooms, making them difficult to use. We strongly urge the hotel management to ensure that the age of the facilities does not become apparent.

We really loved the hotel. The service was excellent, and the room cleaning was perfect. If you’re interested, our room was very spacious with a gorgeous bathroom, fully stocked with all the toiletries and even pajamas. There was also a massage chair and every possible comfort — simply amazing. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the metro; maybe there are some bus routes, but we used the metro. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. Thank you so much!

The room is quite big, and there is a small balcony where you can go out and get some fresh air. The chickens in the yard downstairs are sleek and shiny. Good: Good cost performance, Good staff, great variety of food, convenient location - next to train station and convenience stores, signs are in english and Japanese. Staff have limited english skills which is ready good for simple requests I think. Bad: room seems to have no air conditioning (cool cold air) - the ”air condition” dail only has fan speed not temperature and it blows warm air. The window gives cold air but can be noisy, especially at day time with construction work going on nearby unless window is left very slightly ajar. Overall it's fine but not sure how good it is in the summer without air-conditioning.

The 12 tatami room was very spacious and clean, and the room smelled refreshing. Moreover, Japanese hospitality and their attention to detail made the whole stay very pleasant. Both breakfast and dinner were amazing. We also informed the Ryokan that this was our 6th anniversary trip and they gave us free photography, which was lovely! First of all, the location is a long distance from JR and the electric rail Nara Station. The facade is good. The waiter's attitude is also very good. There are free drinks and books on the first floor for free. But the hotel hardware facilities can be said to be not suitable as a hotel, the bed, bathroom, etc. are too old, the TV is not as big as the laptop, and it is a big circle smaller than the small refrigerator. The sewer is also blocked, and the smell of the sewer is coming to the door. I should not choose this hotel again. It is not a good experience. Of course, the service is very good, but the facilities are really bad.

## Toyoko Inn Nara: An Ideal Gateway to Tang Dynasty Elegance and History Staying at Toyoko Inn Nara felt like embarking on a thousand-year journey into Tang Dynasty culture. The hotel's location is truly a prime hub: it's not only close to iconic ancient temples like Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji, but also incredibly convenient for visiting Toshodai-ji Temple and Yakushi-ji Temple. Just a short bus ride from the hotel takes you directly to these Buddhist sanctuaries, which bear the indelible marks of Sino-Japanese cultural exchange. Setting out from the hotel, the majestic grandeur of Toshodai-ji Temple is truly awe-inspiring. Designed by Master Jianzhen himself after his eastward journey, its architecture perfectly blends the imposing scale of Tang Dynasty buildings with Japanese aesthetics. Amidst its vermilion pillars and graceful bracket complexes, one can still faintly discern the enduring legacy of the prosperous Tang Dynasty. At Yakushi-ji Temple, the towering East Pagoda stands as Japan's oldest surviving three-story wooden pagoda. Its exquisitely intricate carvings tell tales of the glorious era when Buddhism first arrived in Japan. Nearby, the Heijo Palace Site, once the political heart of the Nara period, may now be reduced to ruins, but it still allows visitors to envision the bustling splendor of what was once known as 'Japan's Chang'an City'. Strolling through Nara's streets, one can clearly see the east-west symmetrical layout of a city meticulously modeled after Chang'an, the Tang Dynasty capital – almost like a code for time travel. The hotel is perfectly situated in the heart of this Tang-inspired ancient charm, offering both convenience for exploring and a tranquil retreat from the bustling city. The guest rooms are clean and tidy, with a minimalist yet cozy Japanese-style decor. After a tiring day, returning here to enjoy a cup of hot tea and relax on the tatami mat evokes a wonderful sense of comfort and relaxation. The hotel staff are warm and professional. They not only patiently answer questions in English but also thoughtfully provide transportation guidance between attractions. The surrounding izakayas (Japanese pubs) and convenience stores are also very convenient, making it exceptionally easy to savor Nara's famous Kakinoha-zushi (persimmon leaf sushi) or purchase souvenirs. For travelers eager to deeply experience Nara's Tang-inspired ancient charm and explore the lineage of Tang Dynasty Buddhist culture in Japan, Toyoko Inn Nara is undoubtedly an ideal choice. Here, history and modernity blend seamlessly; every outing becomes a cultural encounter, and every return offers the comfort of home.

I couldn't eat Japanese breakfast. It was too conceptual and unusual. But western breakfast is ok. I recommend you not to pay for hotel breakfast. The only thing is cold, as a Chinese I am not used to it. The proprietress has a very good service attitude, and her English is also very good. She also helped me book a seat on the airport bus. Located next to Shin Omiya train station, which turned out to be not very convenient for visiting Nara. At the same time, the number of trains and electric trains that pass through this station is large. The guys at the reception are very nice, quickly checked in, and tried to explain, with the help of a map, where the main attractions are. The room is standard for Toyoko. The only major drawback is the breakfast, which included a drink and a couple of types of onigiri. The problem was not that it was not enough, but that it was not tasty. The first time I experienced a youth hostel, the bed type was the upper and lower bunks. I was lucky to be assigned to the upper bunks. After all, if I want to get out of bed, it will affect the lower bunks. The hotel staff is still kind, the part that excludes waiting in line for a bath and there is a distance from JR Nara. The hotel is in the forest, and you can walk along the mountain road to the hotel (it would be inconvenient to walk in to get your luggage, you can take a taxi to the door of the hotel). The scenery is so beautiful, leaving the noisy tourist area and getting close to nature. Dinner is kaiseki, in a private restaurant room, a great experience! When checking in, the time for dinner and breakfast will be arranged, and the time of the private bath room will be confirmed, and the service staff will come to the room to call. Hotel location is a bit far from the subway station, if you drag the suitcase, it is more difficult, there is a slope. I lived in the 303 with an open-air hot spring room. The room environment was quite good, but there was a wooden ceiling above the hot spring pool, but there was often a bird's eye view to stay. If you shit, you just fell into the hot spring... I saw that there was feces in the bathtub. In the end, there was no hot spring. But the waiter service is very thoughtful, this gives full marks. A beautiful and modern hostel. Unfortunately I never met any staff member and also no one cleaned or arranged the beds, while I was there. All the lights remained on, even in the dorm and there’s no possibility to turn them off. The dorm itself was unfortunately also quite cold, while all the other spaces were warm and cozy. Otherwise everything was okay. There was a nice common space. But in general it doesn’t feel very safe and organized, as anyone can just enter the hostel and the dorm without any key or password.

The host is a very friendly old gentleman. A century-old old villa with a Japanese atmosphere. It feels very homey. It is very clean and tidy. On the day of check-in, the old gentleman worried that we could not drive us to Nara Park to see the deer. I like the accommodation experience here.
