Which Beijing Airport Should You Fly Into?

Most international travelers will end up at Capital Airport (PEK) – it handles roughly 70% of Beijing's international traffic and serves way more global routes, especially long-haul flights to Europe and North America. Daxing is newer and fancier, but its international network is still growing, focusing mainly on Asia and a handful of Middle Eastern/African destinations.

When deciding where to land, your choice should depend heavily on where you plan to stay and what you want to see.

Pick Capital Airport (PEK) if

• You're staying near central Beijing – Forbidden City, Tiananmen, Wangfujing, Nanluoguxiang, Shichahai, Summer Palace, and Yuanmingyuan are all much closer to PEK. Getting to Dongzhimen (the main subway hub for central Beijing) takes about 30 minutes on the airport express, and from there you're 10-15 minutes from most core attractions.
• Your airline flies there – Star Alliance (Air China, Lufthansa, United, etc.) and most oneworld carriers operate out of PEK. If you're flying from North America or Western Europe, PEK is almost certainly your only option.
• You arrive late at night – The airport express runs until around 23:00, and airport buses run on night schedules. Taxis are readily available and the ride to downtown is shorter and cheaper.

Pick Daxing Airport (PKX) if

• You're going to Universal Beijing Resort – It's roughly the same distance from both airports, but PKX connects directly to the high-speed rail network, which can get you to the southeast side of the city faster depending on your final stop.
• You're continuing by high-speed train – This is PKX's secret superpower. The Jingxiong Intercity Railway runs directly under the terminal – you can walk from your arrival gate to the high-speed rail station in about 10 minutes and be at Beijing West Station in ~28 minutes. If your hotel is near the west or south of Beijing, this can actually be faster than PEK.
• You value modern facilities and short walking distances – PKX was built for efficiency. The "five-finger" terminal design means the farthest gate is only about an 8-minute walk from security – no endless tram rides like at PEK T3. The jet bridge rate is also much higher, so you waste less time on buses.
• Your airline is based there – China Southern, China Eastern, and most SkyTeam carriers use PKX as their main Beijing hub. Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, and a few others also fly exclusively to Daxing.

My personal rule of thumb: If you're a first-time visitor doing classic Beijing sightseeing (Forbidden City, Great Wall, Temple of Heaven), fly into PEK if you have the choice – you'll save 30-45 minutes each way on transfers. But if PKX is significantly cheaper or has better flight times, don't panic – it's very well connected, just further out.

1. Capital Airport Express (Subway)

This is my go-to for reliability. It's a dedicated subway line that doesn't get stuck in traffic.

• Route: Beixinqiao → Dongzhimen → Sanyuanqiao → T3 → T2
• Price: ¥25 (~$3.50) one way
• Travel time: ~20 minutes from T3 to Dongzhimen, ~30 minutes from T2
• Hours:
• • City to airport: 06:00 – 22:30 (from Dongzhimen)
  • Airport to city: T3 first 06:22 / last 22:52; T2 first 06:36 / last 23:10
• Pro tip: At Dongzhimen you can transfer to Subway Line 2 (loop line) and Line 13. At Sanyuanqiao you connect to Line 10 (the outer loop). From Dongzhimen, it's about 40 minutes total to reach the Forbidden City area by subway.

2. Airport Shuttle Buses

Cheaper than the express and drops you at more locations directly, but slower in traffic.

• Price: ¥30 (~$4.20) – ¥40 (~$5.60) depending on route
• Routes: Multiple lines covering major hotels and districts (Gongzhufen, Beijing Station, Xidan, Zhongguancun, etc.)
• Hours: Most lines run from first flight to last flight, with night buses available after 23:00

3. Taxi / Didi (Rideshare)

• Price to downtown (Tiananmen area): ~¥100–130 (~$14–$18)
• Travel time: 30–50 minutes depending on traffic
• Note: Official taxi stand is outside the arrival hall. Didi (China's Uber) works with international phone numbers now and is usually slightly cheaper.

Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX) → City

1. Daxing Airport Express (Subway)

The fastest subway line in China – it hits 160 km/h and is genuinely impressive.

• Route: Caoqiao → Daxing Xincheng → Daxing Airport
• Price: ¥35 (~$4.90) one way for standard class; ¥50 (~$7.00) for business class
• Travel time: Only 19 minutes from Caoqiao to the airport
• Hours:
• • City to airport: 05:30 – 22:30 (from Caoqiao)
  • Airport to city: 06:00 – 23:30 (from Daxing Airport)
• Pro tip: Caoqiao connects to Subway Line 10 and Line 19. From there it's another 20-30 minutes to central Beijing. Total time to Dongzhimen is about 50-60 minutes.

2. High-Speed Rail (Jingxiong Intercity)

This is the underrated option that most tourists don't know about.

• Route: Daxing Airport → Beijing West Station
• Price: ~¥30 (~$4.20) one way
• Travel time: ~28 minutes
• How it works: The high-speed rail station is literally underground in the same building. Walk from arrivals to the train station in about 10 minutes, scan your passport to enter, and you're on a high-speed train straight to Beijing West Station – which is right on Subway Line 7 and Line 9. If your hotel is in west or southwest Beijing, this is faster than the subway.

3. Airport Shuttle Buses

• Price: ¥40–50 (~$5.60–$7.00) depending on route
• Routes: 11+ city routes covering Beijing Station, Beijing West, Zhongguancun, Deshengmen, Tongzhou, and more
• Hours: Multiple night bus lines run after the subway closes, with the Beijing Station route running 24 hours

4. Taxi / Didi

• Price to downtown (Tiananmen area): ~¥150–200 (~$21–$28)
• Travel time: 45–70 minutes depending on traffic
• Warning: The subway stops running at 22:30 from the city to the airport, and 23:30 from the airport to the city. If you miss it, taxi is your main option – though night buses do run.

Money-saving hack I've used: If you're flying business class or have a flexible ticket with Air China, China Southern, or China Eastern, check if your ticket includes a free airport express voucher. Sometimes it's automatically included. If not, you can sometimes find discounted tickets on secondhand platforms like Xianyu for around ¥20 (~$2.80) each – though availability varies, so don't count on it.

Capital Airport (PEK) Terminals

PEK has three separate terminals, and they're not close to each other – mixing them up is a classic rookie mistake.

Terminal 3 (the big one)

• This is where most international flights and Air China flights go. It's enormous and split into three zones:
• • T3-C: Main building – check-in, domestic gates
  • T3-D: Satellite hall – domestic gates, reachable by APM people-mover
  • T3-E: Satellite hall – all international gates, reachable by APM
• My honest take: T3 is impressive but tiring. From security to a far gate in T3-E can take 15-20 minutes including the tram ride. And the jet bridge rate isn't great – I've gotten stuck on a bus to a remote stand more times than I can count, which adds another 10-15 minutes.

Terminal 2

• Older but more compact. Handles China Eastern, some SkyTeam airlines, and several Asian carriers.
• International and domestic are in the same building, so transfers are quicker than T3.
• Much shorter walking distances overall.

Terminal 1

• Mostly domestic flights (Hainan Airlines, China United). Currently limited international operations.

Transferring between terminals: Free shuttle buses run between T1, T2, and T3 every 10 minutes during the day (every 15 minutes at night). The ride between T2 and T3 takes about 8-13 minutes. If you're on an airside international-to-international transfer, there are dedicated buses too, but domestic-to-international usually requires exiting and re-clearing security.

Daxing Airport (PKX) Terminal

PKX has one massive terminal building designed like a starfish with five "fingers" (concourses). This is by far the better-designed airport.

• Floors breakdown:
• • B2-B1: Subway, high-speed rail, parking
  • Level 1: International baggage claim, arrivals
  • Level 2: Domestic baggage claim, transfers
  • Level 3: Domestic security, domestic departure gates, VIP services
  • Level 4: Check-in (both domestic and international), international immigration & security
  • Level 5: Restaurants, viewing area (you can wave goodbye to people going through security – pretty cool)
• The best part: After security, the farthest gate is only about 600 meters – roughly an 8-minute walk. No trams, no buses, no nonsense. The jet bridge rate is much higher than PEK, which saves a ton of time and frustration.
• Transfers: The dedicated transfer center on Level 2 handles all transfer types (international→domestic, domestic→international, international→international). Minimum connection times are as low as 45 minutes for international-to-international and 60 minutes for mixed transfers – much tighter than PEK

Beijing Airport Arrival Process for Foreign Visitors

I'll walk you through exactly what happens when you land, so nothing catches you off guard.

1. Deplane & Follow Arrivals Signs

• Follow the green signs for "Arrivals" or "Baggage Claim."
• At PEK T3, you'll take the APM people-mover from T3-E back to the main T3-C building.
• At PKX, you just walk down the concourse toward the center of the starfish.

2. Immigration / Border Control

• Have your passport ready with your visa (or make sure you qualify for visa-free entry).
• Foreign passport holders use the lanes marked "Foreigners / 外国人."
• Pro tip: You can fill out your arrival card online in advance through the National Immigration Administration app or WeChat mini-program. This saves you from filling out a paper form and speeds things up. PKX has free Wi-Fi that works with just your passport scan, so you can even do it after you land.
• The officer will stamp your passport and take a photo/fingerprints. Just smile and be patient.

3. Baggage Claim

• Check the electronic screens for your flight number and corresponding carousel number.
• Free luggage carts are available right by the carousels.
• At PEK, porters are available for ¥10 (~$1.40) per cart if you have heavy bags.

4. Customs Inspection

• Nothing to declare? Take the Green Channel (Nothing to Declare).
• Goods to declare? Take the Red Channel and fill out a customs declaration form.
• What you need to declare (simplified):
• • More than ¥5,000 (~$700) worth of goods you acquired abroad
  • Alcohol over 1.5L, cigarettes over 400
  • Plants, animals, food products, medicines
  • Large amounts of cash (over $5,000 USD equivalent)
• Prohibited items you definitely can't bring: Fresh fruit, meat products, fresh dairy, seeds, firearms, drugs. This is enforced – don't risk it.

5. Welcome to Beijing!

• After customs, you're in the public arrival hall.
• Both airports have a "Beijing Service" counter near arrivals with multilingual staff who can help with SIM cards, transport info, hotel bookings, and attraction tickets.
• Free Wi-Fi is available at both airports. At PKX, you can connect to "BDIA-FREE-WIFI" and authenticate with your passport.

Important note about liquids: On your departure day, remember that liquids over 100ml can't go through security in your carry-on. You can bring an empty water bottle and fill it up after security – there are water fountains everywhere. Power banks under 100Wh are fine in carry-on but must not be checked in.

I regularly arrive 3 hours early at PEK T3 just because there's so much to do. Here's what's actually worth your time:

Before security (public area, Level 5 east side):

• Drinks: Chagee (霸王茶姬 – popular Chinese milk tea), Starbucks, Manner Coffee, Heytea, Shuyi
• Food: Dagu Rice Noodles, Yujian Xiaomian (Sichuan noodles), Master Kong Beef Noodles, Xijiade Dumplings, Ritan Vietnamese Pho
• Souvenirs: Daoxiangcun (traditional Beijing pastries – great gifts), Palace Museum cultural shop, Pop Mart

After security (T3-E international area):

• Luxury brands: Louis Vuitton, Burberry, MaxMara, Lululemon, Tory Burch – duty-free prices
• Tech: Huawei premium store
• Coffee: Starbucks, Manner Coffee are both airside too

My honest opinion: The food before security is way better and cheaper. Eat before you go through security if you have time – airside options are more limited and pricier.

Daxing Airport (PKX)

• PKX has a good selection of both local and international food outlets spread across the concourses.
• The luxury shopping area is smaller than PEK T3 but still has the major brands.
• Since everything is under one roof, you can wander between concourses easily without worrying about missing your flight.

What to Do on a Long Layover at Beijing Airports

Layover at PEK (7+ hours)

8-12 hours: Central Beijing quick tour (doable but tight)

• If you have 10+ hours and hold a visa (or qualify for 240-hour transit visa-free), you can absolutely pop into the city.
• Take the airport express to Dongzhimen (~30 min), then subway to Tiananmen East / Forbidden City area (~15 min).
• Realistic itinerary: Tiananmen Square photo op → walk through Qianmen area for lunch → Temple of Heaven (closer and less crowded than Forbidden City) → head back.
• Important: The Forbidden City requires advance booking and takes 2-3 hours minimum. I don't recommend trying it on a 10-hour layover – you'll be stressed the whole time. Temple of Heaven + a nice lunch is more relaxed.
• Budget your time: Airport express + subway = ~45 min each way. Immigration both ways = ~30 min each. Security = ~20 min. So from 10 hours you lose about 3 hours just on transit and formalities.

Under 7 hours: Stay at the airport

• Eat at the various restaurants
• Shop duty-free
• Grab a lounge pass if you have Priority Pass or can buy one
• Free Wi-Fi to catch up on work

Layover at PKX (7+ hours)

Important reality check: PKX is much further from downtown. A 10-hour layover sounds like a lot, but by the time you get to the city and come back, you barely have time for anything. Most travel vloggers will tell you it's not worth going all the way to Tiananmen on a 10-hour PKX layover, and I agree.

10+ hours: South Beijing / Universal area option

• Take the airport express to Caoqiao, then subway to Universal Beijing Resort area (~1 hour total).
• You won't have time to actually go into the park, but you can hang out at Universal CityWalk (the entertainment/dining area outside the park) for a few hours, which is free to enter.
• Alternatively, go to Nanluoguxiang + Shichahai area – it's doable in 9+ hours but tight. One traveler I know did: Nanluoguxiang stroll → lunch → Jingshan Park hilltop view → Shichahai sunset → back to airport, and made it work with 9 hours.

Under 8 hours: Stay at the airport

• PKX is actually a great airport to kill time in – the architecture is stunning and worth walking around.
• There are plenty of cafes and shops to browse.
• The 24-hour rest areas are comfortable if you need to nap.
• If you have Priority Pass, the lounges here are newer and less crowded than PEK.

240-Hour Transit Visa-Free: Both airports participate in China's 240-hour transit visa-free policy for eligible nationalities. That means if you're connecting onward to a third country, you can leave the airport and stay in Beijing (and the wider Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area) for up to 10 days without a visa.
