When You Need to Renew Your Passport

Most adult passports are valid for 10 years and most child passports for 5. But the real question isn't when your passport expires — it's how soon before that date you should renew.

Two rules drive the answer:

  • The 6-month rule. Many countries require your passport to have at least 6 months of validity beyond the date you arrive. Some require 3 months. If you'll have less than that on your travel dates, you can be denied boarding.
  • Renew early, don't lose time. In most countries, unused validity (up to a limit) carries over to your new passport — so renewing 6–9 months before expiry is the safe choice.

A good rule of thumb: if your passport has less than 9 months left and you're planning international travel, start the renewal process now.

How Passport Renewal Works: The Three Main Methods

No matter which country issued your passport, you'll usually have three ways to renew:

  1. Online. The fastest and often cheapest method. Available in the US, UK, Canada and Australia for most eligible adults. You upload a photo, pay online, and track the application by email.
  2. By mail or post. Send your application form, photo and old passport to the government office. Slightly more expensive in most countries.
  3. In person. Required if it's your first passport, your last one was lost, stolen or damaged, or you're a child. Usually also the route for urgent travel.

The exact form names and rules differ by country — for example, US travelers use Form DS-82 for renewal — but the basic categories are the same.

Passport Renewal Fees and Processing Times by Country

Here's how the major passport-issuing countries compare in 2026. Fees and times are based on current government information, but always check the official site before applying — several countries have raised fees this year.

Country

Standard Adult Fee

Standard Processing

Fast/Urgent Option

United States

$130 (mail or online)

4–6 weeks routine

Expedited 2–3 weeks for +$60; passport agency appointment for travel within 14 days

United Kingdom

£102 online / £115.50 by post (from 8 April 2026)

Around 3 weeks (HMPO advises allowing 10 weeks)

Fast Track £166.50 (~1 week); Premium same-day £239.50

Canada

Fees increased on 31 March 2026 — check the Government of Canada site for current rates

10 business days in person at specialized offices; 20 business days by mail

New "30 days or free" guarantee — automatic refund if processing exceeds 30 business days

Australia

Check official Australian Passport Office site for current fees

Allow at least 6 weeks total

Priority service: 2 business days; Fast Track: 5 business days (extra fees apply)

India

₹1,500 (36-page) / ₹2,000 (60-page) standard

30–45 working days, including police verification

Tatkal scheme: +₹2,000, issued in 1–3 working days

Singapore

S$70 online / S$80 in person at ICA

Around 2 weeks locally; 4–6 weeks overseas

No separate "fast track" — online ICA eService is already fast

Philippines

₱950 regular / ₱1,200 express

12 working days regular

Express: 6–7 working days in Metro Manila

A few notable 2026 changes worth knowing:

  • The UK raised its passport fees by about 8% on 8 April 2026 — many travelers are still seeing outdated figures online.
  • Canada launched a new "30 days or free" guarantee on 1 April 2026 — if a complete application takes longer than 30 business days, you get a full refund automatically.
  • India's Tatkal scheme remains one of the fastest urgent-renewal services in the world — a fully renewed passport in as little as 1–3 working days for an extra ₹2,000.
  • Singapore consistently issues passports in around two weeks when applied online — among the smoothest processes globally.

Urgent Passport Renewal: What to Do If You're Traveling Soon

If your trip is days away and your passport isn't valid, you still have options:

  • United States: Book a passport agency appointment if you're traveling within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. Bring proof of travel.
  • United Kingdom: Book the Premium same-day service for adults (£239.50), where you collect your new passport at the appointment — or the Fast Track 1-week service.
  • Canada: Apply in person at a specialized passport office and ask about urgent processing — bring proof of travel.
  • Australia: Apply for Priority service when you lodge your application and provide evidence of urgent travel.

Urgent services are not guaranteed — slots fill quickly during peak travel seasons. The earlier you book, the better your chances.

Common Passport Renewal Mistakes to Avoid

These are the small errors that cause most rejections and delays:

  • Bad photos. Shadows on the face or background are the single biggest reason passports get rejected. Use your government's official photo checker if one is available.
  • Renewing too late. Standard processing times don't include mailing time. Add a couple of weeks on each end before you book any travel.
  • Forgetting the 6-month rule. A passport valid on your departure date isn't the same as one accepted at the border. Check the rules for your destination.
  • Using a paid third-party site. Many countries have official sites that are free to use. Apply directly through the government portal to avoid extra fees for no extra service.
  • Old passport name mismatch. If you've changed your name, you'll need supporting documents (marriage certificate, court order). The exact form varies by country.
