Zhangjiajie Hotels by Area: Which Base Fits Your Trip

Choose the base before the hotel. The park base is Wulingyuan: the East Gate, the free eco buses and Baofeng Lake sit within a few minutes of the hotels, and the first buses leave before the day tours. The Tianmen cableway base is the city, with the lower cableway station, Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station and most of the restaurants within a couple of kilometres. Downtown at 72 Wonder Tower and Dayong Ancient City is for cheap rooms, late food and the high-speed station.

The two mountain bases are roughly 30 km apart and a coach ride of about 50 minutes links the city with Wulingyuan, so most visitors move hotels once, on the morning they change mountains.

Zhangjiajie Hotels in Wulingyuan: Best for Park Days

Wulingyuan is the village that grew at the park gate, and the practical detail here is the ticket: the park pass is a multi-day ticket that includes the eco buses, and adults are booked by name for a named time slot rather than buying at the gate. That makes the entrance you pick on day one the most important booking of the trip. The landmark gate and the Baofeng Lake visitor centre sit at opposite ends of the same strip, with restaurants, hotels and the Xibu Ancient Street in between, and the first eco buses leave before the day tours arrive.

Manyuan is the one for an early gate start, since the landmark gate is at the end of the road and breakfast begins at 07:00. Four Seasons Lai gives up the gate for the lake, a pool and a garden, which suits a family that wants an afternoon off the mountain. Both stand in the same village strip, and Xibu Ancient Street is 1.5 km away for dinner.

Zhangjiajie Hotels Near Tianmen Mountain Cableway: Best for the City Base

The Tianmen cableway starts in the middle of Yongding district, so the hotels around its lower station double as a city base. The lower station is a couple of minutes from the Guanliping addresses on foot, Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station sits about 700 m further on, and the coach to Wulingyuan leaves from there. The cableway ticket is separate from the park pass and the mountain is usually a half day, which leaves the afternoon free for the city.

Atour is the practical choice: cheaper, closest to the cableway, and the free laundry matters on a trip built around climbs. Both are a short ride from Hehua airport and from the coach that leaves for Wulingyuan.

Zhangjiajie Hotels at 72 Wonder Tower and Dayong Ancient City: Best for Budget Evenings

Downtown is where Zhangjiajie goes out after dark. The 72 Wonder Tower complex on Wulingshan Avenue is a lit tower with a food street at its base, Dayong Ancient City recreates the old town a few minutes away, and rooms here cost less than in either mountain base.

• Hampton by Hilton Zhangjiajie Seventy-two Wonder Towers: Four star on Wulingshan Avenue inside the 72 Wonder Tower complex, less than 100 m from the tower and its night show, with a free gym, free public parking, a 24-hour convenience store and service robots. Average rate about US$95.

Hampton is the newer building and the one place in this guide where the food street is downstairs. Sky Retreat is the cheapest room here, high above the old town, and the shared kitchen suits a longer stay more than a single night. For a family that wants breakfast included, Hampton is the simpler booking.

Zhangjiajie Hotels by Price Range

Sorted by average rate, the six Zhangjiajie hotels fall into three bands, and no band belongs to one area alone.

Star rating hardly predicts the bill: the five star costs less than the four star at the park gate, and the three star downtown costs least of all. Address moves the rate first, then the pool.

Zhangjiajie Hotels for Arrival Nights: Hehua Airport and West Station

Hehua airport sits a few kilometres from downtown, so nobody needs an airport hotel here: a city hotel is the airport hotel. The high-speed station is a different matter, 25 to 31 km from the two Wulingyuan hotels, which makes a late train plus a park start on the same night a poor pairing.

• Landing at Hehua (DYG). Atour is the closest of the six to the airport, Wyndham Garden and Sky Retreat come next, and Hampton plus the two Wulingyuan hotels sit at the far end of the list. Four of the six arrange a paid airport pick-up, among them Wyndham Garden and Sky Retreat, so the car can be waiting at arrivals.
• Arriving at Zhangjiajie West. Hampton is about 5 km from the station and Sky Retreat about 10 km, both close enough for a taxi with bags. A direct coach also runs from West station to Wulingyuan, so a park hotel on the same night works if you land before the afternoon.
• Booking the first night. A late arrival is the one case where the city base beats the park base: downtown hotels keep a 24-hour front desk, while a Wulingyuan check-in after dark leaves a 40 minute drive before breakfast.

Zhangjiajie Hotels: Trains, Buses, Food and Booking Tips

Four practical points change a stay here more than the star rating does.

• Ride the coach between the two mountains. City buses 4, 6, 16 and 17 link Zhangjiajie West station with downtown and the Tianmen cableway station, taxis start at CNY 6 (about US$1), and Didi or Amap covers the rest. For Wulingyuan, a tourist coach runs from the central bus station and takes about 50 minutes, which is why most visitors move hotels once rather than commuting between the two bases.
• Book the park ticket by time slot. The park pass is a multi-day ticket that includes the eco buses, adults are booked by name for a named slot, and the gate checks that booking on the day. Book about a week ahead in peak season, which runs from March to November and fills around public holidays, and pick the entrance closest to your hotel on the first morning.
• Eat under the 72 Wonder Tower lights. The food street at the base of 72 Wonder Tower covers the downtown pair, Xibu Ancient Street is 1.5 km from both Wulingyuan hotels for dinner after a park day, and the streets around People's Square serve the Tianmen cableway base.
• Book a family room rather than a second bed. Rooms here sleep two unless you book a family category, so a family of four needs two rooms or a suite. Rates move with weekends and public holidays, and both Wulingyuan hotels fill first when the park is busy.
