Heading to Taiwan? Read 2026 guide to the Taiwan Digital Arrival Card (TWAC). Learn who needs it, step-by-step submission, and entry checklist.

What is the Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC)?

Taiwan Arrival Card

The Taiwan Arrival Card, officially called the Taiwan Digital Arrival Card (TWAC), is a mandatory electronic entry form required by the National Immigration Agency (NIA) for incoming foreign visitors.

It replaces the old paper-based arrival cards. The digital system is designed to streamline border control, slash wait times at immigration halls, and create a paperless entry process.

Important Note: The TWAC is strictly an arrival log for border security. It is not a visa and does not replace visa requirements if your passport requires one to enter the country.

Do I Need a Taiwan Arrival Card?

Yes. If you are a foreign national who does not hold a Taiwan Resident Certificate (ARC), you must fill it out.

Even if your home country enjoys visa-exempt status (such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Japan, or EU nations), you are still legally required to submit a digital arrival card before passing through customs.

Who MUST Submit a TWAC

  • Foreign tourists and business travelers entering under visa-exemption programs.
  • Foreign nationals holding short-term visitor visas or e-Visas.
  • Hong Kong and Macau residents holding Multiple Entry & Exit Permits.
  • Mainland China residents visiting for sightseeing with valid entry permits.

Who is EXEMPT From Submitting a TWAC

  • Taiwanese citizens and holders of an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC).
  • Foreigners holding a valid Resident Visa or Diplomatic Identification Card.
  • Direct transit passengers who are not passing through immigration control.

When Should I Apply for a Taiwan Arrival Card?

The optimal window to submit your TWAC is within 7 days prior to your scheduled arrival date in Taiwan (including your day of arrival).

While the system technically allows you to fill it out right up until you land, trying to do it on airport Wi-Fi while standing in a moving immigration queue is stressful. Completing it 24 to 48 hours before you fly ensures a completely stress-free arrival.

Requirements for Entering Taiwan

Securing your TWAC is just one piece of the puzzle. To avoid being turned away at the boarding gate, ensure you meet Taiwan’s baseline entry criteria:

  • Passport Validity: For visa-exempt visitors from countries like the US or Japan, your passport must simply be valid for your intended length of stay. However, for many other nationalities, a minimum of 6 months passport validity from your entry date is required.
  • Onward Ticket: You must possess a confirmed return flight ticket or an onward ticket to your next destination country.
  • Clean Legal Standing: You must not have any active entry bans or history of immigration violations in Taiwan.
